  1. If the cover is made from cardstock it is normal to see that type of spine wear/damage because the cover is so hard, AFAIK, CGC considers this to be a Bindery Defect since the color breaks when the book is folded during production. Without seeing the rest of the book it is impossible to tell how much, if any the spine wear will/may lower the grade.
  2. Blunted corners, small ding top edge by left corner, color breaking scratch by the CCA logo, color breaking crease/scratch along outer edge by the cape, minor spine stress with a few color breaking stress lines and staple tears, cover wrap is slightly off center. IMO...FN/VF 7.0 8.0 VERY FINE (VF): Back to Top An excellent copy with outstanding eye appeal. A limited accumulation of minor bindery/printing defects is allowed. Cover is relatively flat with minimal surface wear beginning to show, possibly including some minute wear at corners. Inks are generally bright with moderate to high reflectivity. An unnoticeable 1/4" crease is acceptable if color is not broken. Stamped or inked arrival dates may be present. Minor foxing. Spine is almost completely flat with a possible minor color break. Staples may show some discoloration. Very slight staple tears and a few almost insignificant stress lines may be present. Paper is cream to tan and supple. Centerfold is mostly secure. Minor interior tears at the margin may be present. 7.0 FINE/VERY FINE (FN/VF): Back to Top An above-average copy that shows minor wear but is still relatively flat and clean with outstanding eye appeal. A small accumulation of minor bindery/printing defects is allowed. Minor cover wear beginning to show, possibly including minor creases. Corners may be blunted. Inks are generally bright with a moderate reduction in reflectivity. Stamped or inked arrival dates may be present. Minor foxing. The slightest spine roll may be present, as well as a possible moderate color break. Staples may show some discoloration. Slight staple tears and a small accumulation of light stress lines may be present. Slight rust migration. Paper is cream to tan. Centerfold is mostly secure. Minor interior tears at the margin may be present. 6.0 FINE (FN): Back to Top An above-average copy that shows minor wear but is still relatively flat and clean with no significant creasing or other serious defects. Some accumulation of minor bindery/printing defects is allowed. Minor cover wear apparent, with minor to moderate creases. Inks show a significant reduction in reflectivity. Blunted corners are more common, as is minor staining, soiling, discoloration, and/or foxing. Stamped or inked arrival dates may be present. A minor spine roll is allowed. There can also be a 1/4" spine split or severe color break. Staples may show minor discoloration. Minor staple tears and a few slight stress lines may be present, as well as minor rust migration. Paper is tan to brown and fairly supple with no signs of brittleness. Minor interior tears at the margin may be present. Centerfold may be loose.
  3. To properly grade the book it needs to be removed from the bag with clear pics of the front and rear covers so you can easily see the corners/edges and pics of the spine/staples. Interior pics of the inside front and rear covers/splash pages and centerfold would also help. What issue do you have? https://www.mycomicshop.com/search?q=teenage+mutant+ninja+turtles+1&pubid=&PubRng= https://recalledcomics.com/TeenageMutantNinjaTurtles1.php
  4. Blunted corners, some color loss along the top and outer edge edge and in price box, writing in the "R" of Avengers, color breaking creases along the outer edge, minor spine wear with multiple color breaking spine ticks and staple tears, dent/ding along lower edge of rear cover, minor to moderate staining/tanning/discoloration on rear cover. IMO...FN- 5.5 6.0 FINE (FN): Back to Top An above-average copy that shows minor wear but is still relatively flat and clean with no significant creasing or other serious defects. 5.5 FINE- (FN-): Back to Top Fits the criteria for Fine but with an additional defect or small accumulation of defects that detracts from the book's appearance by a perceptible amount. 5.0 VERY GOOD/FINE (VG/FN): Back to Top An above-average but well used comic book. An accumulation of bindery/printing defects is allowed. Minor to moderate cover wear apparent, with minor to moderate creases and/or dimples. Inks have moderate to low reflectivity. Blunted corners are increasingly common, as is minor to moderate staining, discoloration, and/or foxing. Stamped or inked arrival dates may be present. A minor to moderate spine roll is allowed. A spine split of up to 1/2" may be present. Staples may show minor discoloration. Minor staple tears and minor stress lines may also be present, as well as minor rust migration. Paper is tan to brown with no signs of brittleness. Centerfold may be loose. Minor interior tears may also be present.
  5. 4.0 VERY GOOD (VG): Back to Top The average used comic book. Cover shows moderate to significant wear, and may be loose but not completely detached. Cover reflectivity is low. Can have moderate creases or dimples. Corners may be blunted. Store stamps, name stamps, arrival dates, initials, etc. have no effect on this grade. Some discoloration, fading, foxing, and even minor soiling is allowed. As much as a 1/4" triangle can be missing out of the corner or edge; a missing 1/8" square is also acceptable. Only minor unobtrusive tape and other amateur repair allowed on otherwise high grade copies. Moderate spine roll may be present and/or a 1" spine split. Staples may be discolored. Minor to moderate staple tears and stress lines may be present, as well as some rust migration. Paper is brown but not brittle. Minor to moderate interior tears may be present. Centerfold may be loose or detached at one staple.
  6. Slightly blunted corners, small color breaking crease at the top left corner, color loss/scrape at top edge/right corner, recessed upper staple with a couple of color breaking spine ticks, cover wrap is not completely centered, small ding on the lower/outer edge of rear cover, moderate tanning/discoloration of rear cover edges, spine, and edges of interior pages. As the book sits right now, IMO...FN+ 6.5 Not sure how lenient CGC is these days, IMO, if all of the discoloration is able to be cleaned/removed, probably a VF - 7.5, by the grading standards I use (Overstreet/Heritage), the two color breaks mentioned at the top edge/corners will prevent this from being a VF 8.0. VF 8.0 - An unnoticeable 1/4" crease is acceptable if color is not broken. 6.5 FINE+ (FN+): Back to Top Fits the criteria for Fine but with an additional virtue or small accumulation of virtues that improves the book's appearance by a perceptible amount.
  7. I am not a "paper conservator" so identifying that staining as pure foxing as opposed to another form of dirt/grime is beyond my areas of knowledge, however... There is not a lot of info online pertaining to foxing on comic books, mostly for art and no clear, concise way for a layman to determine exactly what it is, there are numerous videos claiming to show how to "remove foxing" on comic books. Foxing is integral to the paper, it is not just on the surface, any attempts at cleaning, even by professional conservators are usually only temporary and the foxing returns, proper storage is the key to slowing down/preventing foxing. A Black Light can be used to detect Foxing, Fingerprints, Restoration, etc. as they show up differently under black light than normal paper/dirt, supposedly mold glows and/or changes color under a black light. I bought this when I was selling my Grandson's Pokémon Cards to look for fingerprints, $10.00 at Amazon. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08KS7BGN5/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o06_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
  8. Slightly blunted corners, slight color loss in the black area along the spine, minor to moderate foxing/discoloration on rear cover along spine. IMO, as the book sits right now with the foxing...VF+ 8.5 to VF/NM 9.0 If the foxing/discoloration can be removed (foxing is biological in nature and cannot be removed) the book will grade higher, NM- 9.2? 9.2 NEAR MINT- (NM-): Back to Top Nearly perfect with only a minor additional defect or defects that keep it from Near Mint. A limited number of minor bindery/printing defects are allowed. Cover is flat with no surface wear. Inks are bright with only the slightest dimming of reflectivity. Corners are cut square and sharp with ever-so-slight blunting permitted. A 1/16-1/8" bend is permitted with no color break. Small, inconspicuous, lightly penciled, stamped or inked arrival dates are acceptable as long as they are in an unobtrusive location. Slight foxing. Spine is tight and flat. Staples may show some discoloration. Almost no stress lines. Paper is off-white to cream, supple and fresh. Slight interior tears are allowed. 9.0 VERY FINE/NEAR MINT (VF/NM): Back to Top Nearly perfect with outstanding eye appeal. A limited number of bindery/printing defects are allowed. Cover is almost flat with almost imperceptible wear. Inks are bright with slightly diminished reflectivity. An 1/8" bend is allowed if color is not broken. Corners are cut square and sharp with ever-so-slight blunting permitted but no creases. Several lightly penciled, stamped or inked arrival dates are acceptable. Very minor foxing. Spine is tight and flat. Staples may show some discoloration. Only the slightest staple tears are allowed. A very minor accumulation of stress lines may be present if they are nearly imperceptible. Paper is off-white to cream and supple. Very minor interior tears may be present. 8.0 VERY FINE (VF): Back to Top An excellent copy with outstanding eye appeal. I do not know what your criteria/reasoning is for having a book graded, looking at eBay sold auctions and MCS, this is a $5.00 book, financially it is not worth grading. Grading and encapsulating a book does not provide any more protection than a Mylite and Acid Free Board, slabs are not airtight nor are they UV protected and must be stored in the same, proper, environmental conditions as raw books.
  9. Slightly blunted corners, slight edge wear with slight color loss along top edge, small bindery tear at top, a few color breaking spine ticks. IMO... 10. Personally, I have no issues with tape and I have many books in the PR 0.5 to GD/VG 3.0 range that have tape, many of which I taped myself, no point in having a low grade copy fall apart even more each time it is touched/moved, the tape is not going to change the grade on these books. I would tape it from the inside, place it in a Mylite with an Acid Free Board and put it away with the other books in the collection. https://www.lineco.com/document-repair-tape.html Just so you are aware... Grading/Slabbing does not provide any more protection than a Mylite and Acid Free Board, slabs are not airtight nor are they UV protected and they must be stored in the same environmental conditions as raw books, constant temp/humidity, away from all UV light, away from all sources of heat and moisture, away from air vents and not stored in an unfinished basement/garage/attic. On the other hand, having the book graded will prevent human hands from ever touching the book, it may (not always) prevent further damage, it may increase its value to potential buyers and may make it easier to sell should you decide to do that. Unless the pages are brittle, IMO, this book is a... 1.0 FAIR (FR): Back to Top Shows heavy wear. Some collectors consider this the lowest collectible grade because comic books in lesser condition are usually incomplete and/or brittle. Cover may be detached, and inks have lost all reflectivity. Creases, tears and/or folds are prevalent. Corners are commonly rounded or absent. Soiling and staining is present. Books in this condition generally have all pages and most of the covers, although there may be up to 1/4 of the front cover missing or no back cover, but not both. Tape and other forms of amateur repair are more common. Spine roll is more common; spine split can extend up to 2/3 the length of the book. Staples may be missing or show rust and discoloration. An accumulation of staple tears and stress lines may be present, as well as rust migration. Paper is brown and may show brittleness around the edges but not in the central portion of the pages. Acidic odor may be present. Accumulation of interior tears. Chunks may be missing. The centerfold may be missing if readability is generally preserved. Coupons may be cut.
  11. Blunted corners with small piece missing at top left corner and color breaking creases at the top and bottom right corners, slight edge wear with some color loss, multiple color breaking creases along outer edge, minor spine wear with multiple color breaking spine ticks/stress lines and staple tears, some foxing in the price box, minor to moderate spine roll, creasing at lower left corner of rear cover, minor to moderate foxing/staining/discoloration on rear cover. IMO... 12. There are always Facebook groups that allow sales, I belong to 6 Facebook comic book groups, two allow sales, the folks are pleasant and the mods keep things on the up and up, there are also a lot of dealers and comic book artists/writers that are part of these groups, you will have to post some pics. Joining the groups and posting the books for sale is free, so nothing to lose, you can also post on Facebook marketplace for local pickup only, take PayPal Goods and Services only for payment. https://www.facebook.com/groups/comicbookbuyselltrade
  13. Just my personal opinion, CGC must be getting more lenient, neither one of those books appears to be FN+ 6.5 to me, for me, the 1st indication was the spine roll and the overall corner/edge/spine wear, guess that's why everyone says "buy the book, not the grade". It apparently comes down to the individual interpretation of "slight, light and minor". FN/VF 7.0 - The slightest spine roll may be present, as well as a possible moderate color break. Slight staple tears and a small accumulation of light stress lines may be present. FN 6.0 - A minor spine roll is allowed. Minor staple tears and a few slight stress lines may be present, VG/FN 5.0 - A minor to moderate spine roll is allowed. Minor staple tears and minor stress lines may also be present
  14. Slightly blunted corners, color loss along top and outer edge, a few (7-8) color breaking spine ticks/stress lines, slightly discolored staples, slight denting and folds along top edge of rear cover. IMO...VF- 7.5 8.0 VERY FINE (VF): Back to Top An excellent copy with outstanding eye appeal. A limited accumulation of minor bindery/printing defects is allowed. Cover is relatively flat with minimal surface wear beginning to show, possibly including some minute wear at corners. Inks are generally bright with moderate to high reflectivity. 15. Slight blunting/corner wear, small color breaking scratch on top edge above the "T" in "sophisticated".(That is not on any other copies I looked at online), small bindery tear at lower spine, dinged top right corner on rear cover, small fold on lower left corner of rear cover. Unfortunately, all the little folds/dings add up and giving the benefit of the doubt since the rest of the book is in nice shape... 8.0 VERY FINE (VF): Back to Top An excellent copy with outstanding eye appeal. Paper is cream to tan and supple. Centerfold is mostly secure. Minor interior tears at the margin may be present.
  16. Welcome To The Boards!!! I know nothing about these books, however, after a quick search on MCS, it seems these books are all $10.00 and under so not worth grading, also, if you did send them in for grading the books would have to be removed from the polybags, either you will have to do it or CGC will do it and dispose of the polybags, also, any loose items that may have come with the book you will want to keep, if they get sent to CGC they will be disposed of and not be returned.
  17. Without the missing piece this book is in the FN/VF 7.0 range, however, with the piece missing, IMO (not CGC's)...VG+ 4.5 to VG/FN 5.0 Pieces Missing VG/FN 5.0 and Up, no missing pieces are allowed VG 4.0 - As much as a 1/4" triangle can be missing out of the corner or edge; a missing 1/8" square is also acceptable. GD/VG 3.0 - A triangle from 1/4" to 1/2" can be missing out of the corner or edge; a missing 1/8" to 1/4" square is also acceptable. GD 2.0 - The largest piece allowed missing from the front or back cover is usually a 1/2" triangle or a 1/4" square, FR/GD 1.5 - . Up to 1/10 of the back cover may be missing.
  18. Slightly blunted upper corners, multiple small color breaking spine ticks, spine roll and cover moderately off center, small ding/tear on outer edge of rear cover. 19. Just like everything else in grading there are lots of Gray areas when it comes to fading, there is nothing specific in the grading standards mentioning "partial fading", fading itself is not mentioned until VG 4.0, before that everything is based on "cover reflectivity", all of this leaves it up to the individual grader, unless, there is something specific mentioned in the CGC Grading Guide pertaining to this. The book seems to have other areas of fading, personally I would grade this book as a FN 6.0. VF 8.0 - Inks are generally bright with moderate to high reflectivity. FN/VF 7.0 - Inks are generally bright with a moderate reduction in reflectivity. FN 6.0 - . Inks show a significant reduction in reflectivity. VG/FN 5.0 - Inks have moderate to low reflectivity. VG 4.0 - Some discoloration, fading, foxing, and even minor soiling is allowed. GD/VG 3.0 - Cover reflectivity is very low.
  20. Nice Book!!! Blunted corners with color loss and some small color breaking creases, minor spine wear with some color breaking spine ticks, recessed staples, color breaking scratch/crease from spine to the "F" in Flash, indentation in cover by spine below the "F" in Flash, slight discoloration of front cover at top right, very slight spine roll, minor foxing/discoloration of rear cover along spine/top edge. Also, is that a reading crease on the rear cover spine area? IMO...FN 6.0 to FN+ 6.5 7.0 FINE/VERY FINE (FN/VF): Back to Top An above-average copy that shows minor wear but is still relatively flat and clean with outstanding eye appeal. 21. I assume this is a 1st print, I cannot see a difference between the yellow and gold logo's, as far as having the book graded, that all depends on why you want to have the book graded, is it staying in your PC or are you planning to sell, it is probably easier to sell if graded. sold eBay auctions for CGC graded books in the FN/VF 7.0 to VF- 7.5 are in the $55.00 - $70.00 range Blunted/rounded corners, small fold at top right corner, small color breaking scratches at lower right corner, minor spine wear with a few color breaking spine ticks, minor spine roll. I cannot see the "writing indentations" if you could point them out on the cover and inside cover/splash page it will help, I will assign a grade as if they are not present, depending on the severity they could impact the grade further. IMO... 7.0 FINE/VERY FINE (FN/VF): Back to Top An above-average copy that shows minor wear but is still relatively flat and clean with outstanding eye appeal.
