  2. I cannot assign a grade due to the top edge and spine being cropped out of the pic of the front cover.
  3. 5. Pics have a lot of glare... Book wide crease, crease at upper right corner w/color break(?) If that is a wide crease across the cover it will IMO drop the grade significantly, how does CGC view that?, will a press help? With the book sitting as is, IMO... 7.5 VERY FINE- (VF-): Back to Top Fits the criteria for Very Fine but with an additional defect or small accumulation of defects that detracts from the book's appearance by a perceptible amount. 7.0 FINE/VERY FINE (FN/VF): Back to Top An above-average copy that shows minor wear but is still relatively flat and clean with outstanding eye appeal. 6. A couple of very slight stress lines on spine, lower corners are slightly blunted. 9.4 NEAR MINT (NM): Back to Top Nearly perfect with only minor imperfections that keep it from the next higher grade. Cover is flat with no surface wear. Inks are bright with high reflectivity and a minimum of fading. Corners are cut square and sharp with ever-so-slight blunting permitted. Staples may show some discoloration. Almost no stress lines. Paper is off-white to cream, supple and fresh. Slight interior tears are allowed.
  7. The two bottom corners are the only thing that gives me concern, they appear to be slightly blunted/crunched with slight color loss, is it a bindery issue or a wear issue? IMO...(I will not assign a grade higher than NM 9.4 unless I have the book in front of me.) 9.4 NEAR MINT (NM): Back to Top Nearly perfect with only minor imperfections that keep it from the next higher grade. Subtle bindery/printing defects are allowed. Bindery tears must be less than 1/16" on Silver Age and later books, although on Golden Age books bindery tears of up to 1/4" have been noted. 8. 4.5 VERY GOOD+ (VG): Back to Top Fits the criteria for Very Good but with an additional virtue or small accumulation of virtues that improves the book's appearance by a perceptible amount. 4.0 VERY GOOD (VG): Back to Top The average used comic book. Cover shows moderate to significant wear, and may be loose but not completely detached. Cover reflectivity is low. Can have moderate creases or dimples. Corners may be blunted. Store stamps, name stamps, arrival dates, initials, etc. have no effect on this grade. Some discoloration, fading, foxing, and even minor soiling is allowed. As much as a 1/4" triangle can be missing out of the corner or edge; a missing 1/8" square is also acceptable. Only minor unobtrusive tape and other amateur repair allowed on otherwise high grade copies. Moderate spine roll may be present and/or a 1" spine split. Staples may be discolored. Minor to moderate staple tears and stress lines may be present, as well as some rust migration. Paper is brown but not brittle. Minor to moderate interior tears may be present. Centerfold may be loose or detached at one staple.
  9. Corner/Edge wear with color break and chipped upper edge, slight stress lines on spine w/color break, staple tears on top staple, staples slightly discolored, slight staining front and rear cover. 10. Slight edge/corner wear, tear/split with apparent color break on spine by Goliath's head in the corner box, staples are not centered, a couple of minute stress lines on spine, slightly fanned pages, interior tears. IMO, the interior tears keep this book from being a higher grade. 8.5 VERY FINE+ (VF+): Back to Top Fits the criteria for Very Fine but with an additional virtue or small accumulation of virtues that improves the book's appearance by a perceptible amount. 8.0 VERY FINE (VF): Back to Top An excellent copy with outstanding eye appeal. 13. 6.5 FINE+ (FN+): Back to Top Fits the criteria for Fine but with an additional virtue or small accumulation of virtues that improves the book's appearance by a perceptible amount. 6.0 FINE (FN): Back to Top An above-average copy that shows minor wear but is still relatively flat and clean with no significant creasing or other serious defects. Some accumulation of minor bindery/printing defects is allowed. Minor cover wear apparent, with minor to moderate creases. Inks show a significant reduction in reflectivity. Blunted corners are more common, as is minor staining, soiling, discoloration, and/or foxing. Stamped or inked arrival dates may be present. A minor spine roll is allowed. There can also be a 1/4" spine split or severe color break. Staples may show minor discoloration. Minor staple tears and a few slight stress lines may be present, as well as minor rust migration. Paper is tan to brown and fairly supple with no signs of brittleness. Minor interior tears at the margin may be present. Centerfold may be loose.
  14. With all of the defects shown and listed, the creasing w/color breaks, staining, small tear, slight staple tears, blunted/worn corners, foreign substance on cover... 4.5 VERY GOOD+ (VG): Back to Top Fits the criteria for Very Good but with an additional virtue or small accumulation of virtues that improves the book's appearance by a perceptible amount. 4.0 VERY GOOD (VG): Back to Top The average used comic book. 15. Without seeing the actual book one would assume that with a grade of GD+ 2.5 that the spine split would be between 1" and 2" according to the grading standards, unless the book was a higher grade and the spine split reduced the grade to a GD+ 2.5.
  16. 1"-2" crease/tear by the "E" in Wolverine, Tear/Hole/Stain to the left of Wolverines extended claws, small color rub/stain by Wolverine's left shoulder, slight color rub on spine. The book overall is very nice, however the 1"-2" crease and tear hole on the left cover prevent this book from getting a higher grade. IMO... 7.0 FINE/VERY FINE (FN/VF): Back to TopAn above-average copy that shows minor wear but is still relatively flat and clean with outstanding eye appeal. A small accumulation of minor bindery/printing defects is allowed. Minor cover wear beginning to show, possibly including minor creases. Corners may be blunted. Inks are generally bright with a moderate reduction in reflectivity. Stamped or inked arrival dates may be present. Minor foxing. The slightest spine roll may be present, as well as a possible moderate color break. Staples may show some discoloration. Slight staple tears and a small accumulation of light stress lines may be present. Slight rust migration. Paper is cream to tan. Centerfold is mostly secure. Minor interior tears at the margin may be present.
  17. Blunted corners, crease w/color break lower right corner, moderate spine stress with color break, large scuff in the "C" of Captain, slight staining in the "IN" and the "M" in the title. It is the scuff that will keep this book from receiving a higher grade, IMO... 5.0 VERY GOOD/FINE (VG/FN): Back to TopAn above-average but well used comic book. An accumulation of bindery/printing defects is allowed. Minor to moderate cover wear apparent, with minor to moderate creases and/or dimples. Inks have moderate to low reflectivity. Blunted corners are increasingly common, as is minor to moderate staining, discoloration, and/or foxing. Stamped or inked arrival dates may be present. A minor to moderate spine roll is allowed. A spine split of up to 1/2" may be present. Staples may show minor discoloration. Minor staple tears and minor stress lines may also be present, as well as minor rust migration. Paper is tan to brown with no signs of brittleness. Centerfold may be loose. Minor interior tears may also be present.
  18. I cannot answer the question of what does CGC consider a "Medium Spine Split", the definition of medium is "about halfway between two extremes of size or another quality; average." By that definition only, one can only assume that the split is anywhere from 4" - 6" long. What grade did the book receive? Can you see the split through the slab and measure it. Have you contacted CGC and asked them what their definition of a "medium spline split" is?
  19. Moderate spine creasing w/color break, edge wear w/creasing and color break, corners are blunted, lower right corner creased with color break, unknown stamp in center of cover, moderate foxing/mold on rear cover. IMO, the book is better than a VG 4.0 since there are no spine splits or pieces missing, however IMO, the book has too much spine stress for a VG/FN 5.0, so... VG+ 4.5 5.0 VERY GOOD/FINE (VG/FN): Back to Top An above-average but well used comic book. 4.5 VERY GOOD+ (VG): Back to Top Fits the criteria for Very Good but with an additional virtue or small accumulation of virtues that improves the book's appearance by a perceptible amount. 4.0 VERY GOOD (VG): Back to Top The average used comic book. Centerfold may be loose or detached at one staple.
  20. Slight crease on lower right corner, slight color rub at lower left corner, very slight/minute spine stress lines, "9.00" written in pencil on rear cover. IMO... 9.0 VERY FINE/NEAR MINT (VF/NM): Back to TopNearly perfect with outstanding eye appeal. A limited number of bindery/printing defects are allowed. Cover is almost flat with almost imperceptible wear. Inks are bright with slightly diminished reflectivity. An 1/8" bend is allowed if color is not broken. Corners are cut square and sharp with ever-so-slight blunting permitted but no creases. Several lightly penciled, stamped or inked arrival dates are acceptable. Very minor foxing. Spine is tight and flat. Staples may show some discoloration. Only the slightest staple tears are allowed. A very minor accumulation of stress lines may be present if they are nearly imperceptible. Paper is off-white to cream and supple. Very minor interior tears may be present.
  21. Spine splits are not measured in small, medium and large, they are measured in inches. 0.5 POOR (PR) Can have extremely ragged spines or a complete, book-length split. 1.0 FAIR (FR) Spine split can extend up to 2/3 the length of the book. 1.5 FAIR/GOOD (FR/GD) May have a spine split between 2" and 2/3 the length of the book. 2.0 GOOD (GD) May have up to a 2" spine split. 3.0 GOOD/VERY GOOD (GD/VG) May have a spine split of anywhere from 1" to 1-1/2". 4.0 VERY GOOD (VG) Moderate spine roll may be present and/or a 1" spine split. 5.0 VERY GOOD/FINE (VG/FN) A spine split of up to 1/2" may be present. 6.0 FINE (FN) A minor spine roll is allowed. There can also be a 1/4" spine split or severe color break.
  22. I cannot answer your questions about a clean and press since I do not use this service. As the book sits right now all I see is minor corner wear, slight/minor stress lines, slight foxing on the outer edge of the front cover and on rear cover.
  23. The book presents very well. Rounded top right corner, slightly blunted lower right corner, very slight/minor stress lines, Slight color rub in the last "U" of "Kaluu", what appears to be a slight color rub on the right of the top edge about 2" from the corner, Slight foxing on rear cover. Based solely on the pictures that were presented, IMO, the upper right corner prevents this book from being a higher grade, I want to say VF/NM 9.0 but I am going with VF+ 8.5. 9.0 VERY FINE/NEAR MINT (VF/NM): Back to Top Nearly perfect with outstanding eye appeal. A limited number of bindery/printing defects are allowed. Cover is almost flat with almost imperceptible wear. Inks are bright with slightly diminished reflectivity. Paper is cream to tan and supple. Centerfold is mostly secure. Minor interior tears at the margin may be present.
  24. I cannot answer your question about pressing since I do not use that service. It appears that the crease at the top left of the front cover is breaking color, also it appears that some of the stress lines may be breaking color, hard to tell since the cover is white, from the pic of the centerfold it appears that the staples are slightly discolored. IMO, without having the book in front of me or sharper/clearer/close up pics I cannot assign a higher grade than... 7.0 FINE/VERY FINE (FN/VF): Back to TopAn above-average copy that shows minor wear but is still relatively flat and clean with outstanding eye appeal.
