  1. It does reprint ASM 300. https://www.mycomicshop.com/search?TID=322541
  2. I assume this is still valid. https://www.cgccomics.com/news/article/3327/CGC-Modifies-Stance-on-Grading-Submissions-with-Tape/
  3. I LOVED the 25 cent square bound reprint titles when I was a kid in the 60's. When I got back into collecting in 79 I concentrated on my runs of the main titles so I only collected a few of the reprint books from the 60's, I also used Marvel Tales 137/138 to complete my ASM run of 2-200.
  4. The only issues I see are the crease/scratch/tear with color break on the front cover and the crease/scratch/tear on the rear cover which I can only see in your closeup. Only because the overall condition of the book is excellent am I saying it may be a VF/NM 9.0, how much does the color break actually affect the grade? 9.0 VERY FINE/NEAR MINT (VF/NM): Back to Top Nearly perfect with outstanding eye appeal. A limited number of bindery/printing defects are allowed. Cover is almost flat with almost imperceptible wear. Inks are bright with slightly diminished reflectivity. An 1/8" bend is allowed if color is not broken. Corners are cut square and sharp with ever-so-slight blunting permitted but no creases. Several lightly penciled, stamped or inked arrival dates are acceptable. Very minor foxing. Spine is tight and flat. Staples may show some discoloration. Only the slightest staple tears are allowed. A very minor accumulation of stress lines may be present if they are nearly imperceptible. Paper is off-white to cream and supple. Very minor interior tears may be present. 8.5 VERY FINE+ (VF+): Back to Top Fits the criteria for Very Fine but with an additional virtue or small accumulation of virtues that improves the book's appearance by a perceptible amount.
  5. That is a very nice copy, however, I will never assign a grade to a book shown online higher than NM 9.4, here are the grading standards, does your book meet the requirements for a 9.6, 9.8? 9.8 NEAR MINT/MINT (NM/MT): Back to Top Nearly perfect in every way with only minor imperfections that keep it from the next higher grade. Only subtle bindery or printing defects are allowed. Cover is flat with no surface wear. Inks are bright with high reflectivity and minimal fading. Corners are cut square and sharp. Small, inconspicuous, lightly penciled, stamped or inked arrival dates are acceptable as long as they are in an unobtrusive location. Spine is tight and flat. Staples must be original, generally centered and clean with no rust. Paper is white, supple and fresh. Only the slightest interior tears are allowed. 9.6 NEAR MINT+ (NM+): Back to Top Nearly perfect with a minor additional virtue or virtues that raise it from Near Mint. Only subtle bindery or printing defects are allowed. No bindery tears are allowed, although on Golden Age books bindery tears of up to 1/8" have been noted. Cover is flat with no surface wear. Inks are bright with high reflectivity and a minimum of fading. One corner may be almost imperceptibly blunted, but still almost sharp and cut square. Almost imperceptible indentations are permissible, but no creases, bends, or color break. Small, inconspicuous, lightly penciled, stamped or inked arrival dates are acceptable as long as they are in an unobtrusive location. Spine is tight and flat. Staples must be original, generally centered, with only the slightest discoloration. Paper is off-white, supple and fresh. Only the slightest interior tears are allowed. 9.4 NEAR MINT (NM): Back to Top Nearly perfect with only minor imperfections that keep it from the next higher grade. Subtle bindery/printing defects are allowed. Bindery tears must be less than 1/16" on Silver Age and later books, although on Golden Age books bindery tears of up to 1/4" have been noted. Cover is flat with no surface wear. Inks are bright with high reflectivity and a minimum of fading. Corners are cut square and sharp with ever-so-slight blunting permitted. A 1/16" bend is permitted with no color break. Small, inconspicuous, lightly penciled, stamped or inked arrival dates are acceptable as long as they are in an unobtrusive location. Slight foxing. Spine is tight and flat. Staples are generally centered; may have slight discoloration. Almost no stress lines. Paper is off-white to cream, supple and fresh. Slight interior tears are allowed.
  6. I would never assign a grade to any book shown online higher than a NM 9.4, I would have to have the book directly in front of me, even then, would CGC agree with the grade I assigned? From everything I have read NM/MT 9.8 is a crapshoot, anything can happen to the book during shipping or handling that would lower the grade. Here are the grading standards for NM/MT 9.8 and NM+ 9.6, does your book meet all of the requirements?
  7. That tear/stain has no affect on a VG 4.0. 4.0 VERY GOOD (VG): Back to TopThe average used comic book. Cover shows moderate to significant wear, and may be loose but not completely detached. Cover reflectivity is low. Can have moderate creases or dimples. Corners may be blunted. Store stamps, name stamps, arrival dates, initials, etc. have no effect on this grade. Some discoloration, fading, foxing, and even minor soiling is allowed. As much as a 1/4" triangle can be missing out of the corner or edge; a missing 1/8" square is also acceptable. Only minor unobtrusive tape and other amateur repair allowed on otherwise high grade copies. Moderate spine roll may be present and/or a 1" spine split. Staples may be discolored. Minor to moderate staple tears and stress lines may be present, as well as some rust migration. Paper is brown but not brittle. Minor to moderate interior tears may be present. Centerfold may be loose or detached at one staple.
  8. Overall the book appears to be a higher grade copy. I think it would depend on weather this is a Bindery Defect or if it happened after the fact. How do you determine if this is a Bindery Defect? If it is a Bindery defect, according to the Grading Standards... NM 9.4 - MT 9.9 "Only Subtle Bindery Or Printing Defects Are Allowed". VF 8.0 - NM- 9.2 "A Limited Number Of Bindery Or Printing Defects Allowed." Of course grade is determined by the overall condition of the book, how would CGC view this? How do you determine if this is a Bindery Defect??? Bindery Defect - Defects associated with the binding process, including mistrimming, miswrapping, inaccurate stapling, etc.Bindery Trimming Defect Taxonomy - Comic is not cut/trimmed correctly at the bindery. Type I - Cover cut squarely: la. - Cover square--rectangular part of back cover shows along spine or right edge of front cover. lb. - Cover square--triangular part of back cover shows along spine or right edge of front cover. lc. - Cover square--white unprinted rectangular strip at either top or bottom of front cover indicating that cover travelled before trimming. ld. - Cover square--white unprinted triangular strip at either top or bottom of front cover indicating that cover travelled before trimming. le. - Same as la but applies to back cover. lf. - Same as lb but applies to back cover. lg. - Same as lc but applies to back cover. lh. - Same as ld but applies to back cover. Type 2 - Cover not cut squarely: 2a, 2b, 2c, 2d, 2e, 2f, 2g, 2h. - Cover not square/otherwise same as la, lb, lc, 1d, le, lf, lg, lh. 2i. - Cover not square/no other defects.
  9. I started collecting Marvel in 65 as a kid, had to leave all of the books behind when we moved, I restarted collecting in 79, started with new issues of the main titles and some new ones (ROM Spaceknight, She Hulk, Spider-Woman, Machine Man, etc.) and once in a while I purchased some books through mail order which was hit or miss, by time you sent your order in through "snail mail" there was only a 50/50 chance those books would still be there. Back in 80 I ordered some books from a mail order comic shop that I could have driven to in about an hour, it took 6 weeks for those books to arrive. Then came the first LCS I ever found back in 82/83(?) and the back issue market became wide open for me, my issues of ASM 14, ASM 20, Avengers 4 came from this LCS, each was under $20.00, this is also where I started purchasing new issues. In the mid to late 80's I found more LCS's and began making monthly trips to the 5-6 comic shops in the area, one LCS had a "search service" for books you wanted. You filled out a card with your name/address, issue title and number and approximate grade you wanted. When I heard the new Iron Man cartoon was being released in 94 I wanted a copy of TOS 50 (1st Mandarin) so I filled out a search card and about two weeks later the card came in the mail stating they found a copy, paid $45.00 for the book in VF- 7.5. My Son started collecting with me in the early 90's and he was buying new issues, I gave him all of my books from the late 70's/80's to build his collection. There were always small/local shows that we would attend every couple of month's and larger shows annually in Phila. Wizard World was a good con in the beginning (mid 2000's), it was about the comics, not pop culture, that changed and we stopped going. Even though I have GAD, the thrill of the hunt, finding treasure in the wild was exciting and kept me interested, then came eBay for me in 2003, I still made trips to the LCS but eBay made it much easier to find books without leaving the house. 2008 was the last Wizard World we went to, comic book dealers were dwindling and pop culture was expanding. I belong to 6 comic book Facebook Groups and it always makes me smile and feel good when folks show the treasures they found in the wild, especially the ones they were not even looking for. For me, the internet is convenient but will never match the excitement/anticipation of finding books in the wild.
  10. Welcome To The Boards!!! Sorry for your loss , LOVE the memories , I have those same type of memories of my Dad from Phillies games in the early/mid 60's. That is a nice copy you have there , rather than sending it off to CGC at this time you can protect it by placing the book in a Mylar (Mylite) Bag with an Acid Free Board or you can place the book in a UV Protected Frame. https://www.bcwsupplies.com/comic-book-showcase-silver-uv And of course there is proper storage and/or display. Be careful handling the book, clean your hands, when paging through the book be sure it is on a flat/clean surface, as you open the book allow the cover and pages to fall naturally, do not push down on the book to attempt to flatten it while it is opened to read or fold the book in any manner. The book needs to be kept in a controlled environment, away from sources of heat and moisture and away from UV light (unless in a UV protected frame, CGC slabs are not UV protected) Thanks For Sharing!!!
  11. Welcome To The Boards. The basics are... Mylites and Acid Free Backing Boards stored in Comic Storage Boxes or Equivalent. (These next steps also pertain to CGC graded books)... Controlled Environment (no unfinished basements, attics or garages), Keep away from all sources of Heat and Moisture, Keep away from or minimize all UV light exposure, (CGC slabs are NOT UV protected.) If you choose to you can insure your collection, no appraisals needed, you determine the amount of coverage. https://collectinsure.com/ Most of all...HAVE FUN!!!

  13. My Son (45) and Daughter (42) will receive all of my collection, 2000 books + numerous other Marvel collectibles/memorabilia. Who gets what is stated in my Will, at the time of the writing of the Will my Son was still into collecting so I left him the books that he would be interested in, my Daughter has already told me she is only interested in the $$$, now that my Son is no longer collecting that is all a moot point, they will sell the entire collection and split the proceeds.
  14. Too late for that unless you have access to "Mr. Peabody's Wayback Machine."
  15. Typo, should read "PGM: X-Men 101." Left side of the rear cover by "Spalding", is that a stain, a crease or a tear? Assuming it is just a stain... Slight corner/edge wear, slight accumulation of minor stress lines, slight color rub/scratching of the front cover, staining/foxing on rear cover, slight discoloration of the lower staple. 8.0 VERY FINE (VF): Back to Top An excellent copy with outstanding eye appeal. A limited accumulation of minor bindery/printing defects is allowed. Cover is relatively flat with minimal surface wear beginning to show, possibly including some minute wear at corners. Inks are generally bright with moderate to high reflectivity. An unnoticeable 1/4" crease is acceptable if color is not broken. Stamped or inked arrival dates may be present. Minor foxing. Spine is almost completely flat with a possible minor color break. Staples may show some discoloration. Very slight staple tears and a few almost insignificant stress lines may be present. Paper is cream to tan and supple. Centerfold is mostly secure. Minor interior tears at the margin may be present. 7.5 VERY FINE- (VF-): Back to Top Fits the criteria for Very Fine but with an additional defect or small accumulation of defects that detracts from the book's appearance by a perceptible amount.
  16. Slight rounding/blunting of corners with slight creasing/dimples, Slight edge wear, Slight accumulation of stress lines w/color break, 1"-2" crease upper right corner w/color break. IMO, the crease is a killer, it affects the aesthetic appeal of the book, other than the crease the book presents nicely. IMO, the crease prevents this book from being a FN/VF 7.0 - VF- 7.5, but does not display the defects allowed in a FN 6.0, so... FN+ 6.5.
  17. Blunted/Rounded Corners, Edge Wear, Spine Stress/Creasing W/Color Breaks, Non-Centered/Discolored Staples, Slight Foxing On Rear Cover. I am on the fence over the grade on this book, it appears to be better than a VG/FN 5.0 but IMO does not meet the criteria for a FN 6.0, so, IMO... FN- 5.5 6.0 FINE (FN): Back to Top An above-average copy that shows minor wear but is still relatively flat and clean with no significant creasing or other serious defects. Some accumulation of minor bindery/printing defects is allowed. Minor cover wear apparent, with minor to moderate creases. Inks show a significant reduction in reflectivity. Blunted corners are more common, as is minor staining, soiling, discoloration, and/or foxing. Stamped or inked arrival dates may be present. A minor spine roll is allowed. There can also be a 1/4" spine split or severe color break. Staples may show minor discoloration. Minor staple tears and a few slight stress lines may be present, as well as minor rust migration. Paper is tan to brown and fairly supple with no signs of brittleness. Minor interior tears at the margin may be present. Centerfold may be loose. 5.5 FINE- (FN-): Back to Top Fits the criteria for Fine but with an additional defect or small accumulation of defects that detracts from the book's appearance by a perceptible amount. 5.0 VERY GOOD/FINE (VG/FN): Back to TopAn above-average but well used comic book. An accumulation of bindery/printing defects is allowed. Minor to moderate cover wear apparent, with minor to moderate creases and/or dimples. Inks have moderate to low reflectivity. Blunted corners are increasingly common, as is minor to moderate staining, discoloration, and/or foxing. Stamped or inked arrival dates may be present. A minor to moderate spine roll is allowed. A spine split of up to 1/2" may be present. Staples may show minor discoloration. Minor staple tears and minor stress lines may also be present, as well as minor rust migration. Paper is tan to brown with no signs of brittleness. Centerfold may be loose. Minor interior tears may also be present.
  18. In grading there is no "Black and White" there are "Grey" areas that folks will not agree on including CGC. I do not have my books graded, however, I think it would depend on the grader on that particular day, the rest of the book and how much the miscut cover affects its aesthetic appeal, the grading standards state for books from NM 9.4 - MT 9.9... "Only subtle bindery or printing defects are allowed." Define Subtle..."so delicate or precise as to be difficult to analyze or describe." My suggestion would be to post good pictures of the book, complete front and rear cover, spine, corners, edges, staples, centerfold, so the group can determine the overall condition of the book and properly answer your question. FYI, I will not assign a grade higher than NM 9.4 to any book that I do not have in front of me.

  20. Due to the FMV of most modern books and the total cost of grading, most folks these days are only grading modern books if they are going to come back as a Blue Label NM/MT 9.8 and that is a total crapshoot, it may look perfect to you but... When folks post books in the "Spare A Grade" section even with lots of great pics I will not assign a grade higher than NM 9.4 unless I have the book in front of me, even then, would I assign a grade of NM/MT 9.8... I would be afraid to open it, any little thing that happens during the books travels to, through and from CGC could make a 9.8 book a 9.6 or 9.4. Comic books are for entertainment and to bring joy and happiness to the collector/reader, if all you are interested in is having the book in a CGC slab for display purposes regardless of the grade it gets then by all means, Go For It!!!
  21. Corner/Edge Creasing W/Color Break, Spine Stress/Creasing W/Color Break, Color Rub, Slight Foxing, Slightly Discolored Staples. IMO, the amount of creasing/color breaks prevents this book from being a higher grade. VG/FN 5.0 - FN- 5.5 5.5 FINE- (FN-): Back to Top Fits the criteria for Fine but with an additional defect or small accumulation of defects that detracts from the book's appearance by a perceptible amount. 5.0 VERY GOOD/FINE (VG/FN): Back to Top An above-average but well used comic book.
  22. Welcome To The Boards. You need to post the book in the "https://boards.cgccomics.com/forum/42-hey-buddy-can-you-spare-a-grade/" section. Take quality pics of the front cover, edges/corners/spine, rear cover and centerfold, also, there are two different covers for this book, which do you have? https://www.mycomicshop.com/search?q=darth+vader+5&pubid=&PubRng= If you are only interested in displaying the book you can purchase UV protected comic book frames, if the book is being displayed in a room with windows you need UV protection which CGC cases do not provide. https://www.bcwsupplies.com/comic-book-showcase-current-uv Also, I do not have my books graded, but from everything I have read you could be waiting a year to get your book back from CGC.
  23. Besides this site I am also a member of 5 different Facebook groups related to comics. If you are looking to talk about/discuss/ask questions/share there are Facebook groups for each genre, if you are interested in modern/new books there is probably a Facebook group dedicated to that.
