Very true. The overlap would be very small though and potentially not intersect. 😂

I have shared this before on other threads, but this is how I go about my collecting these days and pass along the same feedback to a lot of my new friends entering the hobby. It helps eliminate accumulating too many pages that I’ll have trouble moving later on if my taste changes and also ensures my pages tend to be a bit more liquid if a nicer examples comes along as @Unstoppablejayd mentioned. Flexibility is key in this hobby as one never knows when a coveted piece becomes available.
I guess I could add a third circle to indicate affordability as that is dependent on each prospective collector.

To me a splash a) has to be the first page of a story and b) has to take up the entire page.
I have two pieces I refer to as Splash pages that aren’t first pages. I’m curious if there is a more appropriate term for them based on your parameters. I’m open to adapting.

Congrats!
Dumb question, but is that her in the second panel? I thought she was a teenager?
Yes, that’s her. Marvel gave Scott Hepburn some loose guidelines from what I recall as Adrian Alphona had done the original design work which was to be featured in a later issue (All-New Marvel Now! Point One #1).
Here is the link to Adrian’s work as well which is touring with the Marvel exhibit.

Captain Marvel #14 pg 5
I shared this piece on FB yesterday as well.
Backstory… when I got back into comics about a decade ago, I was checking out all the new characters on the scene. Miles Morales and Kamala Khan were the clear standouts. Kamala’s family is from Pakistan which has a very similar culture to that of my wife’s family from Northern India. With two daughters myself, Kamala really resonates.
Captain Marvel #14 has the very first cameo appearance of Kamala so I avidly pursued copies and did the same when I transitioned into art four years ago. I was able to locate Kamala’s second ever page via Felix (Filipe Andrade) and finally tracked this one down. The owner wasn’t ready to let it go but after several years of communication, we finally came to an agreement, and this one arrived yesterday. I’m very grateful and connections made along the journey.

I sold it all off to buy original art and I'm still selling off my silver age comics collection and my huge collection of graphic novels and buying art with that.
Same. Pre-pandemic I was after the rarest and highest grade comics I could afford. When I got into art four years ago, I saw a very small window of buying opportunity, so I literally sold everything I could around the house that I had collected throughout my life... sneakers, comics, video games, action figures, and even a 90s Acura NSX then rolled everything I could afford into first appearance art. My friends (especially those who were into cars) thought I was absolutely nuts and tried to talk me out of it.
No NSX, but I do have a first appearance page of Yelena Belova on an NSX. Good enough for me.

Not about keeping secrets, but it’s nobody else’s business once the deal is done. Just trying to be respectful of the buyer. They are welcome to do with it as they wish or share (or not) whatever info they decide.
I primarily deal with original comic art, and in that hobby, buyers often prefer not to have their info or thumbprint left on transactions. Just a courtesy thing.

Wow a sale with no pix posted for that price . I wish I can sell books without pix instantly. Congrats to both parties!
I deleted the pics once the buyer and I agreed to a deal to protect their privacy.

CGC Census shows 72 blue labels. I estimate less than half are White Pages based on what I have seen over the past 5 years, so you are looking at only 30-40 copies in the world like this.
GPA shows 2023 average of $23,400 with the last sale in April 2023 at $24k.
UPDATE: SOLD PENDING PAYMENT
Who can buy?
No selling to those on the probation list.
Payment:
PayPal, Zelle, checks or wire. Pay plans available.
Returns:
No returns on CGC books.
Shipping:
Free Priority Mail shipping within the U.S. Will ship to Canada. Postage cost over U.S. priority mail will be paid by the buyer.
Winning:
First unconditional “Take” in the thread gets it. Time stamp rules if multiple “Takes”. A “Take” in the thread trumps any PM negotiations unless negotiations have concluded but haven’t been posted.

It’s good to hear more people thinking like this.
I agree. If true, it means, I can buy first appearance art for less. Please send any first appearance art for sale my way. Happy to take a look. I am being 100% serious.
That said, I also believe the surge of first appearance collecting represents more of a shift in the collecting style of recent entrants to the hobby rather than a blip on the OA radar. No need to yuck another's yum.

Oh man, I have definitely been tempted on a few pieces recently. I bought and was immediately offered double on two particular pieces. Each case was VERY tempting. There was a third piece that was purchased and immediately traded as a friend collected that particular genre and had something that fit my wheelhouse. In the end, it worked out for both parties.

I thought it was a good purchase. Congratulations on bringing this one home. Regardless of who the inker was, in my mind, Cockrum was reason enough to grab. As I am looking at pieces from him in comparison to his contemporaries, this seemed like a really nice example at a fair price.
Same. Awesome grab @Sooners151. I only own one page by Dave Cockrum, but it's one of my favorites I have picked up in the last several years.

Thanks Jason, especially on doing all that comparison work. I don't think he is angling for resale, he just believes what the auction listing said. He doesn't even believe the Kevin Maguire note, he says too bad we won't have a chance to show Kevin Maguire both pieces at once
Malvin
@malvin knows the owner has not claimed his piece as the published version and has privately communicated this with him. Malvin also knows this piece is nostalgic for the owner who was happy to share his new acquisition as a badge of pride. They communicated via private correspondence. This idea of having to keep fighting an ongoing battle is a moot point. Rather than stay silent about this, if Malvin just acknowledged this took place in his private conversation with the owner it would help deescalate this thread. Moreover, Malvin, if you really felt this was a burden you didn't want to carry, you could either have bought the other piece or sell your own as others have shared.
Further, mentions of grooming, gambling, and suicide followed by insults of another piece in this collector's portfolio are beyond too far. Grow up.
-
Did you read his original post? Also, I don’t see this type of lengthy discussion around other pieces in this price range. It just feels it is time to move on. Malvin and the owner already communicated directly and worked this out. Not sure why it keeps being perpetuated.
-
A new collector posted a piece he was excited about and several from the community jumped all over his post saying he was positioning it as something he wasn't. He never claimed his was the published version and simply pasted what the auction description stated. I know we all are quick to opine about art in the hobby, but we also tend to eat our young.
I reached out and suggested if he was unhappy with his purchase based on the description that he should contact Comic Link. He likes the piece as it has nostalgia for him. Friends, we are talking about a $1500 piece, not a Secret Wars 8 page at $3MM+. I don't know many sub $2k pieces that warrant three pages of forum thread and continued replies on his FB thread (until he deleted it) or CAF (which continues to receive replies). I can see why he would feel on the defensive.
Maybe time to move on.

Hey @malvin I do not know if the new owner is on these boards, but he has become friend of mine over the past few months and just got into the hobby. I assured him you and others who had commented had no ill intent and have excellent reputations in the hobby. I do think the Comic Link listing was misleading, and it definitely lends a negative experience for a new collector excited to land a nostalgic piece. I've been there myself as have many others who have chimed in. Such a bummer when that happens, especially early on. Best to just have empathy and move on while we use the experience to make new friends through the process. I feel for both of you in the situation.

The cover to #1 is in the HA archives, and in Halperin's collection on his website.
I just saw this at the Marvel Exhibit in Basel, Switzerland. Pretty amazing piece.

It’s not. I was just trying to understand if perhaps there was a better term with which I was unfamiliar.
