I love the way my books look in mylar or slabs. I also have something like 2 TB worth of comic books in digital format. On the off-chance I have time to read, I simply load whatever I want onto my iPad.

As a kid, I used to read my comics on the floor on or the bed. I still do the majority of any reading I do on my bed at night. Crumpling up my comics, or having a stack on my nightstand, etc is not what I'm interested in. Having them on the iPad and reading as many issues I want with the lights off is pretty cool. I'd buy an old used iPad, do some research on comic apps (there's lots of them) and do that before getting rid of your bags and boards.

And it's not that intimidating - if you can be patient to see how the apps work, you'll be just fine.

    This is the way.

  2. Stuff is everywhere and I know more about said stuff than 99.99% of stores in the world. I know what the FMV value of it is, and I know what my profit margin and spread requirements are. If a store is selling something far below FMV, that's not my problem, that's theirs. I will happily buy it and make my profit margin and spread thank you very much. Don't rip off an uniformed seller. A store is not an uniformed seller.

I said routinely expected to give away their expertise for free. Plenty of the above give their time and knowledge away of their own volition and that's great, but do they get the same raft of s&%t as collectible dealers if they don't do it constantly? Is a doctor a crook if he sends a bill? Is lawyer a scumbag if he doesn't do all pro bono work? I help people all the time with comic questions and expect nothing in return, but using that same knowledge to generate a payday is scummy if the profit is "too much". I just don't buy it.

The store's job is to price it, the buyer's job is to buy it. The end. If this was a person at a garage sale who got a box of comics from the basement because you asked, or someone coming to you for pricing advice, that would be different, but this was a store whose literal job is to price antiques. If they shouldn't know better, who should? Why does their responsibility, their job, and the burden of their work transfer to the buyer? I don't hear that standard, that expectation, anywhere else.

    This is very accurate.

I am more than happy to be a victim of “dumb luck”. The difference is, I have had the foresight to hang on to all my “lucky” purchases instead of throwing them out for a quick flip. That isn’t being lucky.

And if one has half a million to invest. There are far better investments to be made than funny books. Buying a common book like IH 181 today for $10K is just foolish…

I'm not too sure about that.

Apparently people do care about this Superman variant.   I'm feeling pretty good about having 14 different ones right now.   If I didn't already have the Clearview Mall copy, I can almost say for sure that I would have been the high bidder on this recent auction.   Great result by the way for @FlyingDonut !

That was nice, but lets see if the buyer actually pays.

    Hey everyone...

I've been pretty inactive going on several years now, but a rather large and pressing bill (I have six months to pay) has come up and I think it's finally time to cash out the collection. It's a modest collection, probably $10-15K give or take, highlights being a ToS39 4.0, Avengers 4 4.5, and maybe half a short box full of other Marvel silver worth a few hundred each, mostly all CGC'd. Nothing major but decent stuff for the most part. So I have a couple of questions, mostly of a speculative nature.

    1. Is now a terrible time to sell? During covid my ToS39 was selling around $17K but has since dropped significantly it seems. I don't have too much choice here but if it seems like it really is a very bad time I might be able to pursue other options.

    2. What would be the best/easiest venue to unload my books? I don't want to deal with individual shipping, returns, shennanigans, etc, so I'm currently considering Heritage, ComicLink, mycomicshop.com, but I have no experience with any of these in either buyer or seller capacity. Perhaps there's a better option I haven't listed that fits my criteria? I'm not in a major rush but would like to have some cash in hand within a few months if possible, but I'd rather not leave money on the table by having a fire-sale.

Any other advice or suggestions is greatly appreciated!

I did this in March 2022 with Comiclink. I sold about 400 slabs through them over three auctions. I had an exceptionally pleasant experience and would recommend them highly. Part of it that I sold at the absolute apex of the COVID bubble but everything was very pleasant.

I've always been puzzled by the economics of slabbing CA and Modern books, because the profit margins for non-keys just don't seem to be big enough to be worth it.  I can only guess that they are mass submissions with the aim of getting 9.8s, and anything that comes back with a grade of less than 9.8 is just considered to be a cost of doing business.

    Pre-screening is your friend.

When it comes to collecting BA, it's not just the grade.  Getting most BA books in 9.6 or 9.8 is not particularly hard.  But most of them have a big fat white stripe down the spine, or are misaligned, or are cut off at the top or at the bottom, or all of the above.

What's really hard is getting BA books in high grade with excellent QP.

    And white pages.
