  1. The type of collector the OP describes pretty much fits me; I collect comics that demonstrate the "Zeitgeist" of the time, or I collect whatever I find interesting/attractive, and what's going on in other media has zilch to do with what I collect! To illustrate: I actively seek comics that push the allied war effort (Buy bonds! Save your paper! Start a Victory Garden!) or make a political statement (ex: Pep 20 and 27) but am not very interested in the run of the mill WW2 comic showing a superhero stomping axis forces. My Sparky Watts run is almost complete (who???), as is my Hickory run (a comic about a tree???). I am working on collecting all the WW2 comics that have a B-29 somewhere on the cover. This is in memory of my father, who flew B-29s in WW2. Well, you get the idea. --ElJay
  2. Obviously not my copy. But mine is back in the US and I'm in Thailand!
  3. I remember watching Sky King, but I don't remember the premiums! Cool stuff, as usual.
  4. From Heritage's archives: March 5, 2017; a FR/GD sold for $125.48. July 17, 2016; a VG- sold for $203.15. July 23, 2017; a 4.5 sold for $513.85. Last spring's CLINK auction, a 6.5 went for $883. Hope this helps a bit! --ElJay
  5. I went through late elementary, jr high and high school in the 60s. Boner always meant that a male was getting a bit excited. I didn't discover that it had an earlier meaning of a mistake until I was in college!
  6. WW2 books are getting scarce. I track about 130 titles on eBay every week, and last year I would find about 10-20 books of interest per week that were up for auction. Rather suddenly last May things dried up. I went from 10-20 books/week to 0/week, and things haven't improved much since then. As an example, this week I have only found 3 books on eBay that are of interest; last week I found 5. As someone mentioned above, this phenomenon is cyclical in nature, but now there's less available even in the good phases of the cycle! --ElJay
  7. Although V.1#8 seems to get the most attention, I've always liked #9 better (Up yours, Adolph!) Nice #9, Sqeggs!
  8. Dang! Bob grabbed the Hickory while I was taking roll in a science class!
  9. Bakers are hot; so is this thread!
  10. Got this one a couple of weeks ago; glad to add this to the collection!
  11. Picked this one up a couple of weeks ago; just remembered that I hadn't posted it here yet! -ElJay
  12. America's Best 10 - one of my favorite comics that I don't own! Thanks for posting, Readcomix. --ElJay
  13. Just obtained this one! I'm fairly excited, as I've been looking for it for awhile. --ElJay
  14. Sparky Watts has a lot of great covers, and some are downright bizarre! 3 more issues and my Sparky Watts run will be complete. --ElJay
  15. Dang it! Sometimes living in Thailand has its advantages, and sometimes not. Today is a not. Congrats to all who acquired nice quality and reasonably priced books! --ElJay
  16. So we arrived back in Thailand two weeks ago, and I went to a local market to buy some Coke Zero - can't find it -- wait, what's this new stuff??? Got a couple of cans of the new stuff and found it pretty putrid. --ElJay
  17. Not in the best of shape, but it is a scarce Fawcett! --ElJay
  18. Time to add to AJD's list. Big Shot 23: War stamp. With all of the war-themed covers that you see in Big Shot, #23 is the only one pushing stamps. Red Dragon 5: War stamp - blends in with the background so it looks like the minuteman on the stamp is just another superhero running into battle. Catman 17: Buy bonds; buy stamps - this one is hiding in plain sight. Catman 18: War stamp as part of the background. Exciting 38: Buy war bonds. In addition to the usual Nedor "flag" (Buy war bonds and stamps for victory), take a look at the billboard in the background. Fight 25: Tiny little "Buy U.S. war savings stamps!" in the lower left fc. This is one I didn't notice until last week! Heroic 31: Buy more war bonds for victory. --ElJay
  19. I posted this in your "War Bonds..." thread as well. In that thread I also included a photo of the inside back cover, which has a really crude 1 page comic encouraging people to buy War Stamps. --ElJay
