  1. I love Jim Lee art - but as @Rick2you2 said - a tiny headsketch for this price is a terrible value when you can get actual pages for that rate. The problem is that such a sketch is not really satisfying. Nothing personal or special about it.  If he does 1000 of those there would be no difference between them. The attraction for me of original art is uniqueness.  A side view headshot of Batman is the opposite of unique.  If it's $50-100 and you just want something - I get that, but better to go with something else if you are spending 1k or more.

    I had to do a double-take when I saw  Parsonavich mentioned in the same breath as Romita Sr, but I get it.  I was following a lot of titles during the black and white boom and  I really enjoyed his quirky art style (so bad that it’s good).  And Romita Sr has always been one of my favs.

    The way that last sentence was going I thought you were going to say " and romita has always been - so bad he's good too."  As a way to tie it all together. And also as a nod to all the romita haters in the other thread.

    Some would call it a smart way to weaken your opponent without spending a dime :insane:

    (I think you're not picking up on the fact I'm joking ;)  - some people do it, but I couldn't/ wouldn't)

    I figured you had to be joking. Anyone with Sergio Aragones and Kent Burles art among their holdings, has to be decent at heart.  It's just I heard of this (punishment bidding) before - and really can't understand the concept.

    Hi guys,

    I wanted to share with you my first commission (of sorts) story:

    The fantastic artist Derec Donovan (who for years went by the pen and brush name 'Derek Aucoin'),
    posted some cool examples of his commission work on a FB post, on which I've commented;
    Since I owned a Superman vs Doomsday published page he'd drawn back in 1996, I asked him whether he'd
    tackled the character ever since. He couldn't recall when exactly was the last time he drew Doomsday
    (thought he'd just done a few panels with him). I didn't want to bother him all too much, so out of curiosity (nerdism)
    I started looking up my old issues of his run on ADVENTURES OF SUPERMAN in search for another Doomsday,
    but came up with nothing. Lo and behold - the next day, I got a message from Derec with this incredible all-new piece
    he'd just finished drawing ! Of course I've had to have it ! I never thought I'd dip my toes in the commissioning pool,
    but this wonderful experience made me finally understand the excitement and joy of this side of the hobby.

    So here is Superman vs Doomsday, 22 years later (or is it 21 ?):

    cool story. If i got it wrong - feel free to correct me - but he did the art first, then you saw it then you got it? or did you commission it blindly and then love it after it was done. Asking because i don't have a problem with buying art that was drawn first - if i like it. Blind commissions are more of a gamble in my view which is why I generally shy away from getting them.

  5. when I started this thread I was looking forward to more participation. I know that asking for images is asking for a bit of work -but ultimately in art collecting its a visual medium so showing images makes this much more fun.  It doesn't need to be a lot of work though- just pick an artist you are interested in, but don't yet have art from and show some images of work they have done (google is easy to use.). Sharing the love for artists and their art seemed like a great thing to do among 'art lovers.' As the post has gotten a lot of views, I think there is interest and as a way to hopefully evoke more sharing - I would like to share another artist I love that I hope to one day pick up a piece of art from.

    Dave Stevens - he needs no introduction. Super famous. Created the Rocketeer. Everyone loves him. I got to meet him at San Diego back in the 90s. Heck of a guy.

    My first taste of Dave's work was those 3d comics back in the 1980s - seduction of the innocent and Shana. I was also a huge fan of Johnny Quest -and Dave's cover to #5 has been burned onto my brain. I know I will likely never own any of these -but I love his work. I especially love his luscious inking style.   I have the art books and they are sweet. Many folks have pointed out that Dave was influenced by Matt Baker . Baker's brush technique certainly fits the bill. Is there a new Dave Stevens in comics today? If so - who is he/she?

    here are some of my favorite Stevens Covers.

  6. As collectors  - it's always exciting to get your first piece of art by a particular artist.  Is there any artist that you hope to get an example from one day?

    So  - I have been on the lookout for a cool painting by Massimo Carnevale for a while now. He was one of the cover artists on Y the last man and Northlanders - but most of his work is on Italian comics. What I love most from him is his paintings.  He draws great faces, costumes and more - but I adore his rendering in his paintings. While some pieces are available  for sale right now- still have not found the right one for me. Not looking for more than 1 - so I gotta love it.

    Thought I would start this post as a way to talk about artists whose work we hope to own someday. Doesn't need to be a specific piece. Just the artist. Tell us who they are, what you like about them and show a representative image of their work.  As we know many long practicing artists have changed their styles over time - so try and show an image with the qualities you enjoy.

    So - what artist are you on the look out For?

    They also have the splash title page to Spiderman vs Wolverine. I remember some talk about it when the cover came to auction a little while back. Wonder if it will make a good consolation prize to those that lost out on it or if the new owner would want to add it along with the cover?

    It' not a bad page - but the cover has Spidey and what made that comic cool at the time was the idea of 2 of them fighting each other.

  8. Have you ever bought a piece of art - that you never would have thought you would like or even care about until the day you saw it. That's what happened here.  If you had asked me am I a Jones fan or if I care for a Batman cover - I would likely have said No. Not really. Then it happened. Did I mentions there are mummy and Deadman?

    Just added. Batman and Deadman cover by Kelly Jones.  See it Here.

  10. Inspired by a comment in the Jim Lee commssion post - where a board is said they got commissions with expectations to not get their money out t any point. I present this poll. For art you buy at $500 or more - even though you may not buy for value - most of us have expectations of value - so what is yours for art you buy now  ( not art you have held for years already. ) time line for gains or losses will vary - but in general - it' for however long you will keep it. Assuming didn't buy to flip in the first place.

    Talking published art here. Not commssions.

    I only have A - artwork, how much can I get for A- art?

    Seriously, I got my A- art in 2006, but before everything blew up I guess?  Idk, I haven't bought any new art since 2006 since I can't afford anything I want. Anyway, if i was collecting today and can't afford the big names, I'd work collect today's hot artists and try to get the best stuff I could afford and hang onto it. That's probably anyone's best bet if 60s-80's art isn't within your reach.

    If you are comfortable doing so - what is this A art you speak of?

    Wow!  This is even better than the Dr. J. Evans Pritchard method for evaluating poetry! :idea:

    I had this mad idea that I can come up with my own system - like the famous 'Andy Method'.  But now I know - there will never be another one like that.

  13. so with the discussion being all very deep - I thought I would try and sum it up as a math equation.

    where C = Character, A = Artist, N = Nostalgia, P = Popularity and V =Value

    CA+NP = V

    now - to do math -each needs a value - so if we say a value from 0.1-10 with 0.1 being low and 10 being high.

    as an example

    character = samurai santa   (0.1 out of 10 since we don't have zero as a choice)

    A = Jim Lee (9.5 out of 10 -since he's a meagastar)

    N = 0.1 (since again, don't have zero to choose from)

    p = 0.1

    Value = 0.1x10+0.1x0.1

    value =0.11

    now 0.11 is kind of a weird value - so to get a $ value, you would need to calculate this for a lot of art, then figure out the median price and extrapolate.. etc.. (example if median price for a comic page is $100 - then a samurai santa page would be worth $11)

    if we tried this out with something popular like Batman hush

    A = Jim Lee (9.5 out of 10)

    C = Batman (10 out of 10 - is there a more popular character in comics?)

    N = key story collected by a lot of folks and still a big hit in trade (8 out of 10)

    P = 9

    V =9.5x10+8x9

    value =167

    so between the 2  examples - its clear batman hush - is worth more than 1500 times the samurai santa

    feel free to destroy my attempted art math.:flamed: no hard feelings if you do.

    I think a lot of it actually has surfaced - on CAF, on dealer sites/inventory, recycled again at auction, and/or popped up with other collectors and shared offline.

    I believe that I know where a lot of the art has ended up, but, don't want to kick the hornet's nest and decline to comment further, either on or off the record (re: do not PM me to ask).

    So its the cabal! I knew it.:devil:
