  1. A beautifully bizarre cover! Great perspectives. Seriously, that's gotta be one of the slower ways to "86" someone. The Flame probably decided just to hang out in a diner for a few hours, sipping on ice cream sodas and chatting with the soda jerk, timing his arrival for maximal drama and front cover headlines!
  2. Those early Jungles are radiant! This one is no exception! Note Kaänga's unique battle strategy of putting his left foot inside the monster's mouth. Note my respectful use of the umlaut in Kaänga.
  3. Classic stuff from Fiction House, Rick and Flex! Personally I'd prefer all of the FH material to be under one roof, Fights and Planets and Jumbo and Rangers and Jungle and Wings and Sheena and Ghost...
  4. Looks like Flex has earned the right to be the Grand Poobah of the Planet 8 Club! Anyone care to second that motion?
  5. Thanks Artboy! Your copy (and Comic Jack's copy) are also pretty fab. Interesting, I always thought that the mascara-like appearance around her eyes was another printer's smudge/error, but after seeing yours and Jack's side by side, now I think it was all part of the artist's cunning plan.
  6. Mine comes in at a 6.0. Some ink scuffing on her thigh, but as long as my rivets are pink, I'm happy!
  7. So that's what a war bond looked like back then! They're much smaller these days, and can fit snugly in a wallet.
  8. Maybe with Superman's help! Oh, wait, he lives in Kansas, sorry...
  9. Now that's funny!! Wouldn't expect anything less from the Sqeggs the Wit-Master!
  10. That banana of yours sure has a lot of pep for 47!
  11. I think I read in the Comic Book Enquirer that the average age of the Gold boardies is 85. You see, Action Comics #1 was released when they were 6 years old, the most vulnerable time in one's life to become a lifelong Gold addict.
  12. I found a Green Mask #2 while box-diving at Big Apple Con, but took a pass due to low-grade. (Also I have trouble committing to books that mostly contain reprints, but that's a personal issue I'm dealing with. ) But seeing this version, maybe I made the wrong decision...
  13. Let's see. Sci-fi? ✔️ (animals in space suits) Funny animal? ✔️ (Spotty the Pup, very funny chap) Horror? ✔️ (creepy villain with lupine motives) Western? This one's dicey, but ✔️ (a shoot-him-in-the-back scenario, saving a damsel in distress) Romance? ✔️ ( clearly, "Peter" and that girl have more than a passing familiarity) The conclusion is clear: I owe you a whiskey. And maybe a C2E2 comic book purchase. I'm partial to Planets < 20 and Fox Features < 1943 !
  14. I LOVE IT!!! Seems that no sub-genre has gone untouched. So Richard, new challenge: if you can post a **sci-fi funny-animal horror western romance** cover, I'll buy one of your books at C2E2 (though not of the sci-fi funny-animal horror western romance kind) at C2E2. Or buy you a top-shelf whiskey...
  15. What a great copy of a rare book! Looks like some Hollywood starlet dangling over the precipice. I turned the book upside down and had a careful study. Joan Crawford? Vivian Leigh? Katherine Hepburn? (kinda out of my element with those 30's starlets)
  16. Of all the places Namora might choose to visit and lend a hand, isn't the desert the LAST place she'd want to be? Her native habitat is the ocean, after all. Get that girl a hat!!
  17. Sadly the Science 1 and Science 2 ladies don't talk to the Weird 2 lady -- they're quite offended that the Weird 2 lady is always showing off her rib cage! ?
  18. Well, under normal circumstances, we might be able to reach a deal on the Science 1, but I don't think the lady on the cover of the Science 2 would be pleased -- she wouldn't have anyone to talk to or complain about how they're always being subjected to science experiments...!
  19. Hmm. Why sad exactly? Wouldn't the opportunity for multiple people (e.g., boardies) to own a slice of this amazing comic book history outweigh whatever nostalgia there might be keeping the collection together, which is to say, being in the sole possession of one person? I guess it's the Robin Hood in me...
  20. +2 (In case you're interested, the podcast Comic Geek Speak has 3 episodes on the GA Capt. Marvel. A lot of fun stuff in it.)
  21. That's a great splash page! Like my begrudging acceptance of detached covers and spine splits, maybe I'll come around to the funny westerns. But of course I would never turn away a Black Cat Mystery, regardless of its contents!
  22. Fascinating thread, this. However, based on the samples presented here, it looks like it's a lot easier to find low-grade books with high eye appeal, and not so much the high-grade books with low eye appeal. Richard's Nickel #8 example is a good demonstration of how high grade does not necessarily translate to a superb looking book. It would be interesting to see more examples of the high grade/low eye appeal books. I don't have much to contribute along those lines, since most of my books are low grade!
  23. I steer clear of rat chews (eew), brittle pages, pages missing, pieces missing, funny animal books, western books, and definitely funny western animal books. I've learned to live with tape and split spines. Depending on the book, I could probably learn to live with many of the aforementioned defects. But not rat chews, no sirree.
