  1. This might be one of the earliest, and I think its only lagging Vampi 1 in market value. But in terms of calling its shot, it may be #1. Lobo was the first black protagonist in his own book. Only lasted 2 issues, as many distributors allegedly received them back unsold. If I recall correctly, I got that apocrypha from reading an interview with artist Tony Tallarico.
  2. How is there not a copy of this in this thread yet?
  3. It’s 24. Those last 2 issues are kind of like a homage to FF 25 and 26, with the FF and Avengers taking on the Hulk in NYC. Nice touch by a creative team of Marvel veterans (Moench/Trimpe/Green) who grew up on Stan and Jack.
  4. Yeah but he’s going to be in the next Dr. Strange movie.
  5. I’m in the yes camp too. First team-up/meeting of Doom and Subby, so much MCU potential for both. They are perennially important characters tied to each other, and as long as comics are published, writers will likely maintain their perennial importance in whatever constitutes the Marvel print/digital universe of sequential art publications too. Barring an upgrade, my copy goes nowhere ‘til it’s all over for me.
  6. Just sorting a bunch of books and thought of this. What about Ghost Rider #35, the "Death Race" cover?
  7. I think they changed those backgrounds because the covers themselves are on that light blue background.
  8. I’m tellin’ ya … worth every penny of $300 to see Spidey kick the outta the X-Men!
  9. Dan inked most everyone at Marvel over the years; definitely one of the better ones. He’s also a pretty strong penciller. He also penciled Dr Strange for a bit, and he was inked by Terry Austin in those issues.
  10. Re: X-Men 137…. I remember reading that off the racks as an 8th-grader. The X-Men are about to fight for Jean Grey’s life. The Beast, an original X-Man, is with them. But he is very much an Avenger at the time. As they were decimated by the Imperial Guard, all I could think was why didn’t the Beast use his Avengers communicator to call for help before the showdown? Besides the Beast, the Avengers lineup at that time was Cap, Thor, Iron Man, Wonder Man, the Vision, the Scarlet Witch, Ms Marvel, Jocasta, Yellowjacket, the Wasp and Hawkeye. I STILL wanna see a What If where he gets that idea before the showdown!
  11. This gets at the heart of it, the thing we collectors often forget when discussing the widgets themselves, the individual issues: the correct answer to “What is the first appearance of Wolverine?” is: “Hulk #180 through #182.” In continuity, that is the full story. That we have decided as a market that the meat of the Wolverine portion of this Hulk story, #181, is most valuable, is not odd. It makes sense, because it is the meat of the first Wolverine story. But the story itself, spanning three issues, is his first appearance in the Marvel universe. We lose sight of that as we lose sight of comics as a content-based medium.
  12. Somebody else pointed out that the likely reason Secret Wars #3 is going up is the first appearance of Titania, but the good reason that should drive that book is Spider-Man single-handedly and believably mops the floor with the X-Men in it. It’s some of the best-written use of Spidey powers ever.
  13. I see some people calling it a Betty #8 homage on eBay. They can’t be that far apart release-wise; curious to go check now that you mention it. Yep - Betty is ‘93, Barbie Fashion is ‘94.
  14. Whatever you do, do not ever read Brave and the Bold #34. Such a great Kubert cover, but the silver age Hawkman relaunch is painful to read, however good the idea was. I actually enjoyed Avengers annual 10; lots going on in there, and it’s an awesome display of Iron Man as he pretty much tips the battle single-handedly. I’ll give you the flipside too — a key I figured was overhyped but actually delivers big time — Betty and Veronica #75, where they sell their souls to the devil. Pretty shocking for silver age Archie.
  15. I don't think I ever posted mine in this thread.
