  1. I think Don has done a good job of capturing a working definition here. Sure there’s books with key content that happen to have classic covers (eg HOS 92, GL76, Hulk 181 etc) and there’s also books that are sought solely for that cover that has permeated the collective unconscious of collectors. In the Bronze Age, the cover-alone bucket does seem a little light with Bats 227 and it’s Tec 31 homage on our short list of slab-designated ones, but we’ve identified a couple that could emerge and get labeled eventually - Supes 233, ASM 151, FF 159. I’d add Iron Man 100. (I didn’t mention FF 112 because the Hulk-Thing slugfest would drive collectability anyway.) I feel like the Copper Age cover-only classics have actually established themselves a little sooner (ASM 306, Hulk 340, Wonder Woman 72 etc). Sometimes, the content and cover are a bit more inseparable as far as what keeps a book on everyone’s radar. Using Tec 31 as an example, it’s easy to lump it in with Suspense 3 and Fantastic 3 as a cover-only Golden Age key, but decades later Matt Wagner got a six-issue miniseries out of a homage to the content of Tec 31 (Batman and the Mad Monk).
  2. The first comic-advertised mail order dealer that I remember ordering from was Harti Comics (Rita Jackson). One of my friends told me about Harti because he was happy. Prices seemed reasonable and service was fast. I also ordered more than once from Hugh O’Kennon. There was always pleasant correspondence, and I think I still have some of the letters/notes in a binder. Come to think of it, I probably even have receipts or order invoices in there too. I’ll look later and see who else I ordered from. I’m sure there were others too.
  3. Early Defenders are a great, fun read: the Avengers/Defenders war, Magneto and the brotherhood of evil mutants, Xemnu the Titan, Nebulon the Celestial Man, the Squadron Sinister, the intro of the Wrecking Crew — their first meeting with the Hulk is priceless!
  4. Very cool piece! Maybe pop a pic of the cover of the GN in the thread? Many may be unfamiliar with the book where it was published. GLWTS!
  5. Wow... and can Catwoman's... oh, nevermind....
  6. That's a great juxtaposition...do octopus really do that????
  7. Same here; just trying to have fun with the topic. It would take more than a character image on a label to get me to pay more.
  8. Not even one that plays the Hong Kong Phooey theme song, Douglas? Seriously, because I generally agree with you, it became a thought experiment. I had to think outside the box. “Ok, what other-than-the-book itself silliness could I conceive of that would actually make me shell out a few bucks based on it, not the book?” I gotta give @Namtak credit for coming up with greeting card style push button theme music so quickly! Again, it would have to be for a cheap book so that it’s for the sake of the silly gimmick itself. I wouldn’t shell out extra for an AF15 slab that sings the Spider-Man theme song from the old cartoons. Beverly Hillbillies, I might do it….
  9. @kav could help with this! @Arkham I am not at all mocking the topic; this is the sort of thing it actually would take for me to buy a book just for the label. Otherwise I am with @Thisisrequired buy the book not the label. But I might buy a cheap weird book in a fun gimmick label.
  10. Beverly Hillbillies! Was there ever a Sanford and Son comic? I would buy a slab that played that theme song.
  11. That might create a bigger market for all those old tv show comics…Welcome Back Kotter, Happy Days, etc
  12. Thank you @vodou I just read the first few installments with morning coffee and have bookmarked the blog. I can see why you highly recommend this. What a great read so far!
  13. Take $15 off any of the remaining 7 Blue Beetle pages listed at $100 each.
  14. Ok, all of the Fables pages are sold, and three of the 10 Blue Beetle pages are sold — the 2 best Human Calculator pages (heating up on the movie rumor, I guess ) and the page with the best flipside sketches. All Blue Beetle pages were/are listed at $100 each; let’s take $15 off each of the remaining ones - take at $85 each. Or, if you think I’m off, send me a PM. I realize the remainder have very little in the way of heroes and villains on them, but there are a couple with cool sketches on back, a Human Calculator page left, and a pretty good Chronos page.
  15. How IS that Florida Man, Buzz? I’ve had and enjoy the jai alai IPA.
  16. When you get bumped to that home page screen, drop down in the upper right to check your profile. Mine showed me as logged in even though it wouldn’t take me to the boards. So I had to sign out then sign back in. Hope this helps. Great books Jay! What did you do???? Someone is going to be very happy grabbing any of these but especially Starslayer 2 and FF Ann 6 IMO.
  17. Man, this joint is filthy with a buncha perverts tonight!
