Where in the world was the Quality Control at CGC???
Get Marwood & I replied to Wally's Comics's topic in Comics General
My money's on Eric. That's a wig, surely. -
I've seen quite a few unusual bound collections cropping up lately online. I had a bid on this recent eBay lot but it went too high - it's quite an interesting collection of stamped UK distributed books and UKPVs with a TGK #60 and FF#7 hiding in plain sight: Content description from the listing: You are looking at a bound volume of vintage comics - as described in a plain black cloth binding 19 vintage comics all shown in the first photo including Giant Lois Lane Annual No.1 Summer 1962 80 pages + covers Adventure Comics No. 301 October 1962 Superboy No. 99 September 1962 Dectective Comics No. 307 September 1962 [1x torn page] features Batman and Robin Superboy No. 100 October 1962 Rip Hunter Time Master No.1 March/ April 1961 Adventure Comics No.302 November 1962 Journey into Mystery Vol 1 No.65 February 1961 [1x torn page] Adventure Comics No.300 September 1962 Superboy No. 94 January 1962 [1x torn page] Adventure Comics No.282 March 1961 includes Aquaman in Aqualand The Fantastic Four Vol. 1 No.7 October 1962 Action Comics No.294 November 1962 Superman No.155 August 1962 Rip Hunter Time Master No. 5 Nov-Dec 1961 [Giant] Superman Annual No.5 Summer 1962 80 pages + covers

This made me smile - four consecutive bi-monthly Green lanterns on 30th Century's site this morning, numbered 4, 6, 8 and 1. Very uniform, and indicative perhaps of an original UK owner collection. Even the stamp placements are consistent:

Yes, there's no mention of the actual UK book details in your screen shot.... ....but I don't know how they factor that strategy aspect into these advices, if at all. The only way to be sure is to ask them, or to see the actual finished slab label. If you do call, Cat, would you do me a favour? Would you ask them, if they have labelled it as the US book with the UK details secondary, are you able to request that the UK details be made primary if that is your choice? In other words, request for them to label the book literally, and not in line with their new strategy? I can't get an answer to that one. More discussion here if you're at a loose end one day!

@Courageous Cat Nice book, Cat. I don't know if you are aware but CGC have adopted a strategy of labelling and recording 'international' books which reprint original US covers with the details of the US book, not the actual book. Here is an explanation from their recent communication: "CGC classifies and labels foreign editions by the title and issue number of their US counterpart, but also lists the foreign title and issue on the label as well." And here is a link to it: https://www.cgccomics.com/international-comics/ It may be that CGC have just made a mistake, and taken your Cartoon Art Productions book for the US original, or it may be that they have consciously labelled it in line with their new practice in which case the slab label should include the original book details as an afterthought as in the examples above. Maybe give them a call to check which it is. Good luck.

There was a couple of lots I considered, but let them go as I only wanted one book in them. With the fees, as you say, just too pricey. I agree too that the quality of offerings has been dropping on all auction fronts lately. Maybe we've hoovered all the esoteric stuff up, finally. Far too Marvel / DC-centric for my tastes Albert, today's auctions....

Have you guys seen the Phillippine variants?

How cool are they. I love the difference in the colour strikes. And that NBS price sticker is gloriously stylish -
OK, curiosity got the better of me and I made offers on the two 'Redskin' books, which were accepted. Pat delivered them today To start, here are the scans of front and back: The shilling copy is a 52 page squarebound book, the 6d copy a 28 page saddle-stitched book: The indicias are as follows: Both copies are printed by Dyson Bros. in Peterborough. The opening stories and content differ: One Shilling Copy: Buffalo Bill Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show (text story with photos) Jungle Facts The Iroquois Trail The Wild Stallion (text story) The Northwest Push 6d Copy: Chief Roman Nose The Wild Stallion (text story) Magic Arrow Buffalo Bill - Super Sleuth (text story) Joe Meek The Oregon Wildcat Wyatt Earp and The Clanton Gang (text story with photo) The only story both share is The Wild Stallion. I'll have a go at matching some of the stories to original content another time, but the learning point here is that Streamline weren't averse to recycling the same title for two different books. Perhaps this is why we have two romance 'My Love Story' books, one 6d and a squarebound shilling priced copy (albeit with different covers)? And is there a Redskin #1 I wonder? All good fun.

Cheers Eric - it passed quite quickly in the end Coolio in the glass house. I had a look myself and found early 1960s UK reprints, made under licence, then it seems that someone cottoned on to dual pricing. It's the sort of thing you could easily enjoy exploring in more detail. One for another day, maybe.

To clarify, I don't view pulps as in scope for my own research into UK distribution which centres around our seven US UKPV comic bearing publishers and all those who imported comics with stamped UK prices. And the dual pricers of course. But this thread has long since moved away from all that and I don't mind discussing things like pulps and such stuff here. Anything published overseas with a UK price on it is interesting to me.

Yes, it was Charlton - I did a post on it in one of my threads. Too many of them now, really. I've lost track. I haven't checked, but there's bound to be an Analog website out there somewhere, with covers. I'd take a peak but I've got tunnel vision - usually the precursor to a banging headache - and have a kaleidoscope of lights bang in the centre of my vision. I could be typing any old dross! Don't say it
