  1. And speaking of rewards for those that care, this is for a fellow Charlton appreciator who, like me, beavers away tirelessly in the background in the hope that a kindred spirit may one day pop by. These two are for all the defiant ones out there... Happy New Year!
  2. A Post of LOVE for Foggy * *Not actual love of course, that would be silly. But man love. No, that's not right either. Love for posting in my thread. That kind of love. Look, I'm not in love with Foggy alright!
  3. Ah, Foggy. My only fan it seems of late. Thanks for dropping by again. Your reward is a post of love. Of deep, passionate love. Here it comes.
  4. That is strange Good old Terrance Dicks - the same description of Tom Baker in every book. The 'shock of curly hair'.....etc. I wonder how they would read now, to an adult. A bit basic probably - much like some of the episodes they were based on! That said, I wish I was back in the 80's...
  5. Excellent! I knew you wouldn't let me down I did a little more searching this afternoon, and we're up to 714 copies now. To further illustrate the size of the task, I look for all the tiles for the month of September 1993 alone (which will appear with December 1993 AUS cover dates). There are a whopping 43 titles for which I have found no AUS copies - just for that one month! I'm told Clive Barker's Ectokid has AUS copies though, and am waiting for evidence. Here they are: Sep 93 (US Cover Date) Marvel Titles with no (Dec 93) confirmed AUS copies Avengers:The Terminatrix Objective #1 Barbie Fashion Battle Tide II Black Axe Children of the Voyager Cyberspace 3000 Clive Barker - Ectokid Dances with Demons Dark Angel Darkhold:Pages from the Book of Sins Deadpool (and the Circle Chase) Death's Head II & the Origin of Die-Cut Fantastic Four Unlimited Hellstorm:Prince of Lies Incomplete Death's Head Killpower:The Early Years Lawdog Mad-Dog Marvel Milestone Edition Meteor Man Midnight Men Morbius Revisited Mortigan Goth:Immortalis Nomad Offcastes Original Ghost Rider Punisher Armory Punisher War Zone Razorline the First Cut Shadow Riders Silver Sable and the Wild Pack Sleepwalker Spyke Supersoldiers Tekworld Thor Corps Tor Trouble with Girls:Night of the Lizard U.S. Agent Warlock and the Infinity Watch Wildthing Wolverine:Killing
  6. What a great list. I read all the Target novels too as a kid. Those were the days....
  7. Following input from those away from the boards, and a gaggle of G.I. Joes turning up on the bay, we've surpassed 700 and I now have 705 issues captured. Three new titles, making 77 so far, have been added: Clive Barker - Hokum & Hex Clive Barker - Hyperkind Clive Barker - Saint Sinner @nesqrick2 Are you seeing this Ness? I rely on you as my solitary CGC boards interested person
  8. ROMANTIC STORY! Special snogging edition "Oh Captain.... How could he? I loved him so...." "Now now. Come away from the lamp Marjorie, with that amount of hairspray you're hair will catch fire" (The not so wise words of 'Special' Branche) "What's in a kiss, have you ever wondered just what it is, more than just perhaps one moment of bliss, tell me what's in a kiss" "I'll be your substitute (oo-oo-ooh!) whenever you need me (oo-oo-ooh!)" Yes. Listen to Ray next time you silly woman. "I've got to tell him... but not now! I can't tell him now!" "Tell me what Daphne?" "I run over the cat" "Oh, is that why she's crying. Never mind. We'll get another. Now, get upstairs and get your drawers off, it's Friday" ROMANTIC STORY!
  9. If anyone is interested I helped Ben Nobel who runs the Wordpress 'Rare Comics' blog to put together an online issue guide for Marvel and DC pence variants - the results can be found here if you'd like to take a peek: https://rarecomics.wordpress.com/2018/12/17/pence-price-variant-issue-guide-marvel-dc/ We haven't had any comments yet so do dive in if this is your thing. Ben was a fun chap to work with and loves his variants In the New Year I'll post the conclusion of my early Marvels indicia review which turned out to be much more complex than I first thought (see earlier posts). As is often the case, it threw up a few surprises and some links to my other research interests (Millers, Font Variants etc). I have a few nice pence books to post too. See you in the New Year
  10. Yep, it's not easy to find high grade early pence books any more. A patience game it is.
  11. You'll only find L Miller indicias in these books BC (unless there's a title with a cloaking device out there): The cents copies are cover dated Sep 60 to Sep 61. I'm working on a big post about Thorpe & Porter indicias which will appear in my Marvel Pence Thread in the New Year. It turned out to be a lot more complex that at first glance. As well as 7 different T&P scenarios, there are T&P indicias in cents only books too (i.e. where no pence copy exists). I think I've got to the bottom of why. Watch this space! (and thanks for checking your books - any reason to have a look eh)
  12. Then you're just not looking hard enough Foggy I have a fondness for our Cynthia. She's a nurse, and she's in love. But she has some stiff competition from Betsy. It's hard to decide between the sometimes, but I think Cynthia edges it with the red hair / black eyebrow look. Who better for a fine avatar Here's a few more of the Crane woman, while we are on the subject: "Nurse! I can't feel my legs!" "I know, they've cut your arms off" Bill looked natty. Patty was catty. Betsy wen't batty when she caught the catty Patty with Bill who was natty. She confided in Hattie, over a cafe latte. "The dark side of the Force is a pathway to many abilities some consider to be unnatural"
  13. Still on 99 Gold Keys.... Here's Boris, man of Mysteries, while we wait for another newcomer. 51 to be precise, a good age I feel. That's some snail isn't it. Although he is one 17, Boris isn't like the other Gold Keys. He's special. Apart from his 6p cover price he has one other cover difference which makes him unique among his 16 other Boris pen(ce) friends. Can you see it? Ah-ha! No 16 page 'fun-catalog' for the UK readers it seems. Still, we don't need it being quite funny already See Road Runner #47 for other such extraneous banner details (that you can't live without) See ya
  14. Afternoon The Postman brought me this the other day. He said "Are you having a Laugh!?": I said, "Yes, it seems I am! Where do I sign?". Shut up. Anyway, I have two Laughs now - the only two known 9d Laughs as it goes. More to come one day I'm sure... What a Laugh...
  15. To clarify, this should read: No AUS issues have been found between cover dates May 1994 (AUS dating) and January 1996 (US dating) inclusive – this block separates the two known runs of AUS books.
  16. Afternoon As promised, I've been working on a full review of Australian priced variants for Marvel. Using the same approach for my pence variant research, I've plotted every AUS copy that I have an image of on a spreadsheet that looks like this: All the individual comic images are kept in title folders like this: And each title has images of every known issue like this: The headlines are that I have so far gathered 693 separate Australian price variants across 74 titles As with my pence research, plotting the books in this way allows me to make observations as to what may or may not exist, and any notable facts and dates. Here are the first 20: Marvel Australian Newsstand Priced Variants – Notes & Observations 74 titles have been found with one or more AUS single priced issues (note: annual titles are recorded separately, i.e. ASM and ASM Annual are recorded as two separate titles). Only official ‘regular sized’ first printing Marvel comics have been captured – magazines, fanzines, reprints and over-sized publications are excluded. 693 issues have been found across the confirmed 74 titles. All issues are newsstand copies. No AUS direct editions have been found. The first cover date found is January 1991. The last cover date found is November 1996. All ‘first run’ AUS issues cover dated January 1991 to April 1994 inclusive have cover dates that are 3 months later than their US counterparts (presumed to accommodate shipping times). For an AUS book cover dated January 1991, the US version will be dated October 1990. The indicias of both copies are as per the US versions. All ‘second run’ AUS issues cover dated February 1996 to November 1996 inclusive have the same cover dates / indicias as their US counterparts. No AUS issues have been found cover dated May 1994 (AUS dating) and January 1996 (US dating) – this block separates the two known runs of AUS books. For the first January 1991 AUS issues, ‘Avengers West Coast’ (63 & 64) and ‘Daredevil’ (285 & 286) have two issues cover dated January 1991. For many of the last November 1996 AUS titles, the ‘final’ November issue is priced at $2.75 whereas the preceding 1996 issues were priced at $3.20. Only six Annual titles have been found so far – Amazing Spider-Man #27, The Punisher #6, The Mighty Thor #18, The Uncanny X-Men #17, X-Factor #8 and X-Men #2. All are 1993 annuals and all have an AUS cover price of $4.75. Only three titles have been found to have issues cover dated April 1994 (AUS dating) – Captain America #423, Spider-Man 2099 #15 and Web of Spider-Man #108. Issues for this date appear particularly scarce and, by way of illustration, no Amazing Spider-Man #385 has been found in ten years of searching. Only five titles have been found to have issues cover dated March 1996 (US dating) – Generation X #13, Uncanny X-Men #330, Wolverine #99, X-Force #52 and X-Man #13. Issues for this date appear particularly scarce and, by way of illustration, no Amazing Spider-Man #409 has been found in ten years of searching. Bi-monthly ‘early / late’ issues exist for many titles between AUS cover dates of October 1991 to April 1992 and, the same months for the following year, October 1992 to April 1993. There are currently no obvious gaps where different titles are missing issues for the same months. Analysis suggests that some titles do appear to have limited issues produced however. For example, the title ‘Ghost Rider’ has a potential AUS issue range of 6-75. No AUS issues have been found for 6-23, but most of the issues from 24-45 have been found. This indicates that 6-23 may not have been produced as the likelihood of not one issue surfacing are slim. In a similar vein, The Avengers has almost all copies between issues 325-362 confirmed but not one after. In respect of whether all issues for each title exist, the McFarlane 1990 Spider-Man run could have AUS copies for issues 3-74 yet only four have been found so far (32, 35, 41 and 74). All the hologram issue #26’s found available from AUS sellers online are the US newsstand copy and CGC has no graded copies (whereas it does for the Spectacular Spider-Man #189 copy of the same month). The image below tells its own story and it may turn out that, like the UK pence variant copies, not all issues of each confirmed title will have AUS copies. Many titles exist for which no AUS copy has been found. Many notable titles are missing copies, e.g. Doctor Strange. For this title, every issue on eBay Australia is a US copy. It seems unlikely that a copy has yet to surface and this indicates that many titles are likely to have been omitted from the AUS treatment (this also mirrors the UK pence variant scenario where many titles did not have pence copies produced). In respect of content, the only differences identified between the AUS and US copies are the price and, in respect of the first run of books, the cover date. No other differences have been found. For the 74 titles found so far, there is a maximum number of 2,158 issues available within the January 1991 to November 1996 date ranges. If we remove the mid-run gap issues of May 1994 to January 1996 the figure reduces to 1,496. However, it is clear that of those remaining issues, many appear to have gaps and missing issues which may not have been produced. Given how scarce may are, it may be difficult to impossible to confirm a definitive AUS issue total. I hope that by publishing this analysis, others will contribute titles and issues that I have yet to locate. As with my pence variant research, I will update the figures and observations as new finds come in. Regular sized issues are priced at AUS $1.50 from January 1991, increasing to AUS $1.80 from May 1992. The price increases again to AUS $1.95 from July / August 1993. Issues from February 1996 tend to be priced at AUS $2.50 or $3.20 with the final November 1996 issues priced at AUS $2.75. Individual special / double sized issues can vary wildly and can be priced up to AUS $6.50 (Midnight Sons Unlimited #1). All six known annuals are priced at AUS $4.75. Data as at 30/12/18, based on the capture spreadsheet v1.0, 30/12/18 Pictured below - Spider-Man #26 US edition, Spectacular Spider-Man #189 AUS Edition (same AUS seller): Pictured below - Avengers AUS copies appear to stop at issue 362: Pictured below - Ghost Rider AUS copies appear to begin at issue 24: I'm going to share these details with other collectors who have expressed an interest outside of the CGC boards and, with their input, we could make this work the definitive word on what exists. AUS copies are not the easiest books in the world to track, especially when you live in England. Hopefully I've made a good start though, and I will update this thread as and when new titles and issues are found. The normal rules apply - - it doesn't exist (in my research) if you don't have a picture! There are 33 titles for October 1990 (January 1991) alone that I have not found an AUS book for so the possibilities for more is considerable. @nesqrick2 @Shawn Low @revat - guys - you have all expressed an interest. Revat - I haven't found any Darkhawks I'm afraid. It looks like they were not produced. Here is the confirmed number list (693) - the boards can be a little temperamental, so I hope it reproduces OK: Title Confirmed AUS Issues Total 2099 Unlimited (1-10) 2 1 Amazing Spider-Man (340-417) 341-384, 408, 410-417 53 Amazing Spider-Man Annual (1993 Only) 27 1 Avengers (325-402) 325-329, 331, 334-342, 344-351, 354-362 32 Avengers (1996) (#1 Only) 1 1 Avengers West Coast (63-102) 63, 64, 66, 73, 74, 76, 77, 80-82, 87, 89, 91 13 Barbie (1-35) 19, 35 2 Cable - Blood and Metal (1-2) 1 1 Cage (1-20) 3, 5-12 9 Captain America (378-454) 379, 384, 387-389-391, 393, 398-399, 401, 403, 404, 407, 409, 411-413, 415, 417-419, 421-423 25 Conan The Barbarian (237-275) 243, 244, 246, 248, 254, 256-258, 261, 262, 264, 265, 269, 271-273 16 Daredevil (285-358) 285-291, 294, 296-314 27 Doom 2099 (1-44) 1-10, 12 11 Fantastic Four, The (345-416) 345-347, 350-354, 356, 358-359, 361-362, 364, 366-367, 372, 374 18 Fantastic Four, The 1996 Series (#1 Only) 1 1 Gambit (1-4) 1 1 Generation X (1-21) 13-17, 19-21 8 G.I. 17. Yes, that's the Miller variant. Issues one to four exist with that extra line of data at the foot of the regular US indicia details. The US copies don't have it, so you have the variant copy that was intended for UK distribution. Well done. I'm going to be offline for a while now to get my eyes sorted so if you don't hear from me for a while that's why. Cheers, Steve
  18. That friend was Ben Nobel who runs the 'Rare Comics' online blog. I've been helping him to produce an online issue guide for Marvel and DC pence variants - the results can be found here if you'd like to take a peek: https://rarecomics.wordpress.com/2018/12/17/pence-price-variant-issue-guide-marvel-dc/
  19. Joking aside, if I were the owner of the 'highest graded' J C Penney second print 145 and 156 I'd be very unhappy to see that picture... What could make it better? A lovely horse.
