I remember that store, I think it shut down in the early 80's. I guess WWBN 32 was safe to stamp back then.
The store still existed in the early 1990s as I had brought a friend down from NY when I worked at IBM and I worked there in 1991, so it was at least open until 1991. They used to pencil prices at the top of the back cover all the time. I used to buy 1970s books from them when they had their sister store in Cliffside Park in the early 1990s.
BTW, that price smudge on the back looks terrible and will hurt the grade some.

I see about 4-5 fingerprints in the black on the left side of the back cover. Try and use a tissue to remove them and avoid touching the book with ungloved hands. Book looks pretty nice overall, but the grade will drop if you don't remove the fingerprints. It seems you may have some also on the front cover right side too. Can't tell exactly.

I always agree that there are insufficiently_thoughtful_persons asking outrageous prices for stuff. Maybe they're hoping for the ignorant or uninformed to take advantage of. It's like the Princess Beanie people asking $1 million for.

I occasionally get half naked chicks wanting to be my FB friend. Nothing here on the boards though.

Hot characters = fanboys. Good writing helps.

That's the norm with the cases.

9.8 with so many issues -- is this common?
Someone posted a book the other day with a 9.8 grade with grader notes. I was surprised such a high grade had grader notes so I inquired as to what the notes were.
They were as follows:
- very light spine stress lines to cover
- very light staple recessed top of spine
- very light wear right top of back cover
Doesn't this seem like a high amount of notes for a book? This was a 9.4 that was sent to CCS for pressing and came back as a 9.8 with these notes.
That spine stress could be non cb since it doesn't mention it and possibly only 1 stress line. It could then be conceivable that the very light wear is a very very small scuff mark. Unless a photo is shown of the book, you won't know how bad the smallest of these defects really are. I think it's good to have defects on 9.8s so the submitters know the book can't be a 9.9 or 10.0. 9.8s have a flaw or two, so why not note exactly what they are?
It's also possible the pregrader gave it a 9.6 and the finalizer didn't feel the defects were really that bad.

There is definitely no shortage of copies available of this book, but I do agree finding higher grades will be costly. I think there are just way too many fans of Spidey and thus prices will remain high. One of the couple of issues I don't own along with a #1. Maybe one day if I ever hit some nice lottery. I keep praying.

GI Joe?
Dark Knight 1?
What about GI Joe? I'm working on it. DK is not Marvel.

Hulk 181 sells in any condition complete or incomplete for several hundred dollars in the lowest of grades. It's a crazy book. Get it graded. Probably can submit it at value tier or EC with missing page.

Good idea to have one for looking at small defects and also to help detect restoration.

The fact that there are no identifiable differences on the cover between the 1st and 2nd printings of Smurfs #1 makes me think I need to go through several copies of Thundercats #3 and make sure that a reprint of that issue doesn't exist. It seems odd that issues #1, 2, and 4 would have multiple printings but #3 would not.
Check the ads, including interior ads and compare pages. Look for coupons like I did with the GI Joe and Smurfs to see if there are dates printed
-
I'm changing the date of 3rd print Marvel Smurfs #1-3 to 3/84 as that is the date of the subscription coupon.
-
Found a variation with GI Joe #2 second print. The small 75 cent price came with the 3 pack which included 26 & 27. The large 75 cent price came with the 5 pack which includes 6, 8, 11, 12. Interior on both are the same dated 3/86 based on the Marvel checklist coupon on the last page with the date Mar86. I can only assume the covers were printed at different locations as the interiors are exactly the same, but the ink is slightly different, especially with the back cover.

Described as Standard Cover on CCL, not newsstand. I find CCL more useful at times than MCS, especially for hard to find small press indies. I'm finally going through my collection seeing what I'm missing and sometimes can't find a title from the 1980s or 1990s on MCS at all.

I see a few of you collect Image newsstand editions too. Do any of you know if there was a Youngblood 1 newsstand? Come to think of it, I don't think I have seen any newsstands for any issues of Youngblood. Issue 1 has that double cover, so I'm thinking maybe it was on the back, and that's why I haven't seen it? I'm at a loss.... anyone know for sure?
Just picked up Youngblood V2 #1 newsstand along with Cyberforce #1,2, Maxx #1, Shadowhawk #4 with the Savage Dragon on the cover, Spawn #12, 14, 16, 17, 39, 75, 79, 112, Medieval Spawn / Witchblade #3, and Spawn Bible #1. Cleaned house of all these awesome newsstands for $1.20 or less.

Actually Marvel SS 18 doesn't say 1st appearance either.
-
I think many first appearances in comic magazines are listed as such, but their first appearance in comic book size books are noted as "first comic book appearance" if I'm correct. An example would be Hulk 271 which states on the CGC label as such for Rocket Raccoon. Raiders does not have it on their label though as I looked just now at a sold signature set on Ebay. Maybe it should be suggested.
-
The majority of Image newsstands are tough to find. It would be interesting to see how rare some are.
-
If they ever do a Shi movie they'll probably heat up again.
-
To be technical, title is Marvel reprints, not DC, but I guess you can include them if you want. I'm not though in the list I'm making.
To help you out possibly, I bought Batman #421, 422, and 423 in 3 packs at K Mart back in the day. These say second printing in the indicia. They came with a backer card of trading cards with dotted lines between the cards. They were not perforated though. I purchased like 8 of these at the time. I have no idea where they all went as I only have 1 set open left. I do remember selling the trading card sheet for $10 on Ebay several years ago.

Bought a collection yesterday with a bunch of Elf Lord stuff, as well as other Aircel titles. Doubt there's anything rare, but I'll get into it further tonight.
In the meantime, hit up a 50 cent sale at the LCS this weekend. None of these are rare or valuable, but it's still a nice little trip down amnesia lane for you fellow copper lovers!
I'm going through my comics right now separating my indies. I have a bunch of these books. Always looking to fill in holes. Nice stuff.

Glad to see people are willing to work together on this. I think this will be very useful. I only planned on putting books with reprints, including first print to show how the original is supposed to look. I don't plan on adding any Canadian issues.
Tape on front and back cover
in Comic Book Grading and Restoration Issues
Posted
Once tape gets old enough and the glue dries, it will fall off. It may take many years. Regardless, you still have the stains from what I'm seeing. Removing it will probably not affect the grade so I would suggest leaving it as trying to remove the tape may result in tape pulls, which would definitely hurt the book.
