  1. Sorry, but, no. The Japanese took the Islands in June of 1942. The U.S. did not start the battle to reclaim until May of 43. In the meantime, the Aleutians were at the top of everybody's fear list in the U.S. I just searched for any area in the Solomans that look like the beach on the cover with no luck. Yet every picture I've found of the Aleutians looks exactly like the cover.
  2. No, unfortunately, the cover has nothing to do with the contents. I say Aleutians because the beach is scrub and the weather looks pretty dismal. Solomons was Jungle all the way up to the shore in some places. The sky also has a aurora borealis look to it. This is the Aleutians This is the Solomons
  3. Battle of the Aleutian Islands up by Alaska. These islands were the only U.S. soil the Japanese took and held, at least for a while. Close to Alaska and Japan, kind of. The loss of these islands combined with the earlier Japanese shelling of a refinery in California contributed to the terrified environment which led to the internment of the Japanese on the West coast and the Italians and Germans on the East coast.
  4. This is interesting. A Barks Four Color Mile High sold back in 2006. Totally missed this. https://www.hakes.com/Auction/ItemDetail/18032/FOUR-COLOR-159-AUGUST-1947-CGC-65-OFF-WHITE-PAGES-MILE-HIGH-COPY
  5. It was me! This book still haunts my dreams. https://hakes.com/Auction/ItemDetail/224078/FOUR-COLOR-386-MARCH-1952-CGC-90-VFNM-UNCLE-SCROOGE-DONALD-DUCK-MILE-HIGH-PEDIGREE
  6. Revive the thread with a fun mid-grade I bought at Oafcon in Norman, Oklahoma last weekend.
  7. I'm more impressed with Kitten. She's in there sans knife about to wrastle the thing!
  8. I'm not sure who's table that is but the business card has the name "Selberg" on it.
  9. Here's a few more pics. I know I took others but Big shout out to Bedrock (Richard). He always brings the goods and even if the other dealers had nothing, the show would still rock because of his selection.
  10. Here is my haul with Cap, Cat, Bugs, and some Spiders. The table that has Cinderella Four color had all of the books shown 10 or 20 deep. Must of been a warehouse find. Finally a couple of wall shots and a shot of the room.
  11. The most enjoyable convention I've been to in forever. I could have spent far more money than I did because there was just so much great stuff. Fortunately, I brought cash this time; so, when that ran out, I knew it was time to skedaddle so that my wife would take me back in.
  12. I really like that Embassy Suites. It seems like a great value for the cost and leaves more money for comics when you have stay overnight.
  13. It was in a weird place: a dealer that really didn't have many comics and only one other GA. I think it was WW II Sandman cover Adventure Comics but I do not remember the number. What time did the doors open? I got there at 10 till 10 thinking it opened at 10 but the doors were open and dealers were already talking to each other about how good the sales were.
  14. First Oafcon in a few years and it did not disappoint! Got to talk to Richard for a few minutes. Missed Cat but talked to his lovely and wonderful wife. Picked up a few books at what I thought were great prices! I have some wall pictures but I will have to post them later tonight.
  15. I snagged this! The selection of low to mid-priced Golden Age at Oafcon is amazing!
  16. From horror in the graveyard to Horror in Room 1705
