The Official Groo Appreciation Thread!
MAY1979 replied to mrwoogieman's topic in Copper Age Comic Books
It was animation rights and without Sergio or Mark's involvement it won't be really be Groo. In the near impossible event soemthign does transpire. It a concept that must be handled very carefully and with out hose 2 it's not more than some mendicant mass-murderer. IMHO anyone purchasing Groo keys at today's prices will lose on ROI in the future. Money might be better spent on cheese dip. -
Border line 8.0/8.5. Presents nicely. Black borders make it tough to find in high grade unless they were carefully bagged from day 1 - like mine It's my favorite TMNT cover BTW

My First & Lr ast Submission to CGC
MAY1979 replied to Homeboy32's topic in Hey buddy, can you spare a grade?
CGC is very harsh on "rubs" and color loss. The technical grades they assign at times do not seem congruent as an example if there is a tiny tear or color loss on the spine especially top corners of spine then it's ok...? They also seem to be more lenient on spine ticks/hits/etc than I am. I am an ultra strict grader in my raw days I was the type dealers and LCS owners hated! I now have a fair idea of what to expect but of course it's a moving target that changes every few years. The last submission I received back was 14 1970's and 1980's books. 12 of the 14 I got exactly grade I expected, 1 was .2 higher, 1 was .2 lower, although those 2 books could have gone in either direction and I did get the higher grade on the book with higher current FMV. I've also learned it seems to work out when I mix in one or 2 9.2 or 9.4 candidates in with my estimated 9.8 multi-book submissions as CGC seem hesitant to assign every book in an order the "hallowed" 9.8. -

What's New In Your Copper Age Collection This Week?
MAY1979 replied to Jasonmorris1000000's topic in Copper Age Comic Books
Just back from CGC this was one of my childhood copies and the second one I've submitted. 252 has special meaning to me. Back in the day my Mom read in the newspaper that ASM 252 was going to be big and it mentioned collectors were purchasing multiple copies for the future. She asked if I had it, i said yes but only one copy due to funds. She then gave me $5 and said get more. Back then even $5 meant a lot to my Mom, she worked 2 jobs to keep us clothed and fed. I then went over to my LCS and purchased 3 more copies of 252 - as I recall they were 1.50 each by then which was more than double the original cost 2 weeks prior.. I do wish Mom was still here to see what happened with the book. Please note this copy was pressed due to a very minor issue on the back, I'm reasonably sure it would have received a 9.8 anyhow, but wanted to make sure. Thanks Mom! Found a copy of the exact article my Mom read, it's from Feb 2, 1984 -

Love those 20,25,30,35 cent Marvel Tales. As kid I used to picked them up in discount bins. It's how I first read Spidey books before my time. -

Same as Nova background mentioned in my last post, the only difference is the purchase price of this one in 1996 was $12. It can't be seen on this scan, but the amount of gloss on this copy is incredible. IMHO a Classic Cover and Schomberg homage by Romita -

Back this past week after it's one year sojourn for pressing and grading. Had very minor ripple on back, no idea if it would have affected the grade or not. A September 1996 $10 mail purchase from Motor City. Back then I sometimes ordered from Michael by mail, and if I did not agree with the grade I'd return at a con for credit on in person purchases. Love that original Nova helmet -

Adventures Mini #1. When I picked up the book as kid as I recall, all copies at my LCS were in rough shape or had light back cover rippling. I went with the later and made a note in my Comics notebook to seek a better copy, something I never followed through on. Last Sept (2021) I self-evaluated the book and except for the light ripple it was pretty much flawless. I sent it and some other Comics to be pressed which I never had really done before. Received it back recently - glad i sprung for a press, although I do wonder it was another case of my being too strict and would it have received a 9.8 anyhow? I'll never know... Love the back cover as I'm a huge Stones fan. -
This Week in Your Bronze Age Collection!!
MAY1979 replied to TupennyConan's topic in Bronze Age Comic Books
Back in the Mid 1990's I routinely attended a local show mainly to visit one specific dealers table. The dealer, Rino, was friendly and one of the most honest I've ever met. His prices were usually a little below guide as his goal was to move merchandise not to simply display it like many dealers do. Rino hoping you are still with us buddy!. In a submission that made it way home to me this month after almost 1 year, 2 of those "Rino" books were included. This was the first time I had a full submission pressed first. All due to tiny non-color breaking issues on back covers. Both books were purchased in Jan 1995, the Marvel Spotlight was $5 the Spider-Woman was $3. I knew the Spotlight would not get 9.8 but before pressing was very a borderline 9.6 and yeah I knew the pages would fall short of White. I think the Spotlight has dropped 60% in FMV from the time I first decided to submit it Glad to have both these books back for the old memories attached.
