Yes, anything's possible with two stubborn bidders, and the book is scarce. I'm not wowed by that cover, though. It's just OK. (I'm not too crazy about Joe Simon's draftsmanship; I don't think there's any Joe Simon cover that I'd rate above a B.)

Mystery Men 10? Science Comics 4? Fantastic 6 or 7? Champion 8? 9? USA 3? Silver Streak 2 for cryin out loud?

Beautiful copy Prof X. Looks way better than the assigned grade.  I didn't check the notes on it yet but my guess is possibly some staining somewhere. Yeah the gold label does seem to kinda stain the cover of the book. Tough to find pure white covered copies.  Most are yellowed/tanned from what I can see.  Congrats with the nice pickup!

Thanks, it's ok. For a 5.0 I think. No stains, mainly various creases here and there. I think the front cover crease knocked it down a full grade. I guess Mr Fantucchio read it a few times before he stored it. Most of his books are at least 9.0's. In person it's pretty white, I'd say a 7or 8 out of 10 , 10 being snow white. X-Men one is a book best seen in person before getting I'm sure you'd agree.. You're 7.0 looks pretty darn white. Little whiter than the 6.0 which ain't bad too shabby either.

This is a cool list I think a boardie created a while back.

Thanks man!  Yeah I was picky about buying my copies.  I wanted to make sure there is no marvel chipping, no yellowing or tanning on the covers, no writing, etc. Yeah, I don't think colors are affected whether it's a lime green or dark green colored box.  It's possible that one of the greens is a 1st print, but I guess no one can prove which one or if it really is true.  So, why not just own both variations lol

Now that's a good attitude (thumbsu I was just messing about the printings in reference to the whole Sup 1 thing we just went through but in reality you never know I suppose. Both look real nice for their grades so yeah being picky is worth the wait. I posted mine a few pages back but here it is again. I couldn't resist having a pedigree so I got it and had it reholdered in gold. Weird though because the gold label makes the white on the cover look a little goldish on the scan even though it's actually quite white . Like it's reflecting on it or something.

Here are my copies. One dark green box, the other lime green.

Very nice. My boxes are lime and I prefer that but honestly I never thought about it until you said something. It doesn't seem to affect the other colors right? Maybe one of the greens is actually a 1st print.........no no just joking , just joking.

I was follow las night's HA auction.  Ended up the underbidder on one book ( :pullhair: ) but also saw this...

Um, did I miss something?  Were 2 collectors high on Easter chocolate?  I know Cole's crime books are under-represented a bit compared to the horror  / romance genres, but this seemed a bit extreme.  Thoughts???

Oh that is extreme. I was thinking about 1,200 to 1,800 tops.

Yikes is right, but I imagine it's all about the so-called "classic cover" image in this issue here as I very much highly doubt you would see this kind of pricing result on virtually all of the other issues in this Speed run.  :whatthe:

That and I see 4 sales (not counting CLink) since 2017 and 3 of them were the same purple 1.0 . Six Blue labels with 6.0 being 2nd highest. Scarce alright.

  7. I thought those 3 mini's 14-16 were Joe Simon covers. #15 possibly Kirby. Now I look and they're Al Avison covers according to the CGC label. Very similar colors and style to the Simon and Kirby covers that followed in the series

Simon gets cover credits for Pocket Comics 1 and 2 which came out a right before Speed 14. I wonder if CGC got any of that wrong. Maybe some or all of the Pocket's are actually Avison covers or Some of the Speed 14-16's are Simon covers .  Probably not I'm sure, they're just so similar.

I think the venue hurt some things, especially the ashcans and some rarities.  Savvy collectors were aware of it but had to be no where near the interest and bidders as an HA auction.  I found the auction experience off-putting, as they didn't allow zoom on the book for sale and didn't have the grade details so I was constantly toggling tabs between the catalogue and auction screen to stay up on what was being offered.  And then they didn't show the premium so was constantly trying to calculate actual sale price with the 25% premium, instead of just showing both totals like on HA.  I thought the auctioneer was kinda blah, he really could've talked up some of those items and the rarity, etc a bit more.  What's the point of a live auctioneer if he isn't going to generate more interest than automated?  And then to have the big ashcans and that Siegel/Schuster sci-fi proto-pulp at the end, those should've near the beginning.  Still, it was an enjoyable experience and fun to watch a once in a lifetime collection sell.

I had multiple tabs open on books I was considering placing bids to see what the resto was on each because they varied a lot. Some I had memorized. And I agree about not showing price with BP but at 25% they were probably ashamed to show it. Half kidding about that last part.

All your points have some validity except I disagree with the conclusion that the venue hurt things. I don't think Heritage would be nearly as focused on promoting low grade books as PBA has been.  The catalog for these auctions is a true delight, full of great information. The "talk up" occurred in incredible detail before the auction even started. If you aren't buying the catalogs and/or reading the descriptions on Liveauctioneers well before the auction then you are ignoring key information! I check out my target books before the auction so I don't really care about the size of the picture during the auction.  While I do agree I like having the premium amount on screen, I can ballpark it quickly. And while I also agree that the auctioneer had no idea what he was auctioning, he performed his essential function really competently and, I thought, gave more time for later bidders than other live auctioneers I've seen in the comic area. I thought the auction went smoothly, was not too rushed, and did not drag.

I like the auctioneer. He seemed relaxed and it went at a perfect pace I think. An even pace at least.

Great great auction. I was traveling last week; not seeing a lot of mad bargains but still wish I'd had a go at a few of the pre-Batman Tecs. Ah well.

The finished prices as shown on the PBA auction site now *include* the BP, correct?

Nice wins!  Picked up a few myself. The two Flessel covers I am very excited about and have been after for a long time.  And then the New Comics 9 was just too cheap to pass up, with that roster of artists.  Already wish I'd grabbed a few more.

Nice, I wish I had a grabbed at least one each of the New Comics and More Funs.  I thought about you when the Detective 13 came up. C-1 with no color touch. I guess that's why it went higher than most of the restored Tecs. Fun little auction that was.

Don't get me wrong here, I'm not advocating for the wisdom of 500k plus for this book.  I think it would be dumb, but I'm almost certain it will happen.  We've come down from the pandemic era highs but did we forget this highest graded 1 of 5 already?  It's Ghost Rider...not...the X-Men. Things like 157 vs 249 copies don't matter all when we're talking about fanatic bidding from a few whales looking for a one and only.  The risk of another 9.9 is real, but probably not in the minds of these bidders.

I can't see this book going for less than the MS 5 9.8.  I'm pretty sure the DC comics presents 26 CGC 9.9 went on Comiclink for something like 30-40 times the price of a 9.8 as well.

You have to understand that there are some collectors out there who will pay almost any amount for the bragging rights to owning the only (for now) 9.9 copy of a key issue (even if there are a few dozen 9.8s that look nicer—and there probably are). I will not be surprised if it hits $200K.

So you think it will hit $200K or $500K?

Hey, Oh yeah I totally understand that's where szav is coming from. Everyone understands.. And it probably will hit around 200k. Who knows really.  All depends on two things I guess, personal wealth and vanity. Like that guy who has an amp that goes up to 11. It's very special. :headbang:
