  1. I sandwhich the comics in between two sheets of 1/4 inch stainless steel. i wrap that in bubble wrap and do another stainless steel sandwhich. I then ship the comic inside a 1500 pound steel safe that is wrapped in bubble wrap.
  2. this is true. but it sounds like the OP wants to display this thing. and while the covers are cool, the content means little to someone new to comics or his buddies he wants to impress. If you can find a decent looking WW II era Timely with Cap or Namor punching a nazi in the face for $500, that is a pretty cool display piece: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Captain-America-Comics-43-CGC-Universal-Grade-3-0-1944-Timely-Comics-/203207208144?hash=item2f5017ecd0%3Ag%3AxrsAAOSwRodfySDl&nma=true&si=BZbpsjZvXBDBh7scMVfgI%2BAabNw%3D&orig_cvip=true&nordt=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557 you probably have a better chance getting on ok copy of the human torch / toro or bucky punching someone in the face though at near that price: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Kid-Komics-8-CGC-5-5-O-W-p-Schomburg-c-Young-Allies-Timely-1945-j-4526/363304848045?hash=item5496a80aad:g:HskAAOSw3ypgLqjw (unfortunately some of these are a bit racist)
  3. $500 probably gets you a 7.0-7.5 Batman 232. An iconic 1st app you can see on its cover.
  4. wasn't THAT long ago I sold a 5.0 or so ASM 129 on these boards for about $130-50. I was psyched as I had just bought it for $50 at a shop.
  5. $500 can probably get you a cgc 8.0 conan 1 that's a nice recognized display book https://www.ebay.com/itm/Conan-1-CGC-8-0-White-Pages-1st-app-Conan-Roy-Thomas/254836655875?hash=item3b5572c703:g:phAAAOSwrB5f9ofJ i can't tell you if its a great investment. none of the books i cited are rare. but i used to think iron man 1 and Fantastic four 48 were so common they'd never get really expensive. i was wrong.
  6. why do you think finding a raw 9.8 for $500 is feasible? this one was over $600 and it wouldn't be a 9.8: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Batman-Beyond-1-1999-DC-Comics-NM-Origin-First-Appearance-/324478510551?hash=item4b8c6d25d7%3Ag%3A45YAAOSwtEFgHZrS&nma=true&si=BZbpsjZvXBDBh7scMVfgI%2BAabNw%3D&orig_cvip=true&nordt=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557 we're talking about a $2500 book in cgc 9.8. raw copies that can be 9.8s are hardly going to be easy to find, particularly as there is plenty of incentive to slab any nice copy as even 9.0 is around $500
  7. OH leave him alone. Yes, it is weird to jump all in and spend $500 on your first comic. most of us started at 25 or 50 cents. $500 gets you a somewhat nice NYX 3. First X-23, the little fire cracker from the logan movie. It is an attractive cover if you are interested in display. $500 gets you a New Mutants 98 in 9.4. Not the most sought after grade, but in 20 years, who knows? Your buddies will know who it is. Pay close attention..do not buy the facsimile versions! As you want to display it, the cover probably matters. $500 can get you a decent Iron Man 55, but Thanos is not on the cover
  8. These titles from 1954 seem to sell for $10-$20++ each on ebay? : https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p2334524.m570.l1313&_nkw=marvelman+1954&_sacat=0&LH_TitleDesc=0&_osacat=0&_odkw=beano+1951&LH_Complete=1&rt=nc&LH_Sold=1 so yeah, thousands of $ seems high
  9. why would something from 1951 be worthless? do brits hoard these in huge quantities? beanos from 1951 seem to sell for $10-$40 on ebay, not oncluding shipping
  10. I forget, do you own a piece of this company? I am more thinking that owning a fraction of a $90K asset seems odd. It isn't much of an asset for this sort of ownership. Owning a piece of a $10 million portfolio of these high end keys seems different. Or even a piece of a $2 million book.
  11. The article I pulled that out of might not have been current. It doesn't matter, bitcoin has done fabulously and has now been around a long time, Why? I have no idea.
  12. they charge more for this service? maybe they charge A LOT more.
  13. I'll be honest, a couple of years ago my son was really into TNMT and I might have gone for that set. Good luck!
  14. As he isn't doing anything with cerebus right now it does seem odd it is so expensive. I understand tnmt
  15. the european copies are reprints other than the british ones, which folks have said were printed contemporaneously with the u.s. ones and shipped to the UK. with that said, forever the uk ones were looked down on. now folks are pushing them for being less common than u.s. ones, but so far I have not seen higher prices for them. for reasons that I don't fully understand, the contemporaneous canadian copies didn't have this stigma or at least nobody really spoke about them until the 2000s and they are priced at a premium. the pence copies have always been out and about. i have a decent # just from fishing through u.s. dollar boxes over the years, at least from the 70s and late 60s.
  16. do we have a definite answer on whether these early SA marvels were contemporaneously printed with the US ones? I know they say that was the case in the 70s, but these? I actually find a lack of a month more visually disturbing than the different price
  17. You need 4 sheets per shipment minimum anyway unless we're talking about heavy appliance thickness cardboard. You can get away with 3 until like the 50th shipment and then something goes wrong.. I used to do 4 in an envelope, but I ultimately decided hoping envelopes wouldn't tear apart was a pain and I went with geminis with a sandwich inside (which is what gemini suggests anyway). my 2 sheet sandwhich is sufficient. This is for raw books, of course. Would I send a $500 raw book in a gemini? Probably not. But with my sandwhich inside the whole thing seems pretty sturdy. If someone is going to run over it with a car nothing is going to help it.
  18. shouldn't cgc be able to add as part of its charge some sort of no grade drop guarantee? a cgc rep cracks the case and makes sure the talent plays nice? when you get a cracked case replaced do they regrade the book?
  19. I tend to lose and forget passwords. I'd probably lose a billion $ kind of irritating you get capital gains preferential treatment with bitcoin, but get burned on comics: https://www.magnifymoney.com/blog/investing/bitcoin-taxes/
  20. cerebus 1 was like $9K in 2014. there are probably quite a few premium books that have tripled since then, no?
  21. yes and no. spawn 1 came out in the bag and board era, so a nice high grade copy might be less of a big deal and cerebus 1 caps out at a 9.4 and hundreds of the 2000 were supposedly mangled? but if spawn really did only have a 2000 copy print run then I could see the numbers being crazy.
  22. No, I think he was more in the marketing end. At the time he was a marketing guy for a wine and spirits company,
  23. this scam has been going on for almost 11 years though. it hit its peak in 2017, but is not down that far from there right now. i never understood it. it was just too easy to create new crypto currencies.
