THREAD CLOSED! Robot Man's Flea Market of Fun!
PovertyRow replied to Robot Man's topic in Golden/Silver/Bronze Age Only
Looking forward to it. I'm starting to look out for affordable ECs. Used to love them back in the day. Both Two Fisted and Frontline Combat set a standard for war books And that Perfect Crime 18 I used to have in pretty nice condition 20 years ago but sold it. Always wanted to get it back but man it is hardly ever offered. One of the few books in that condition I would be happy to have ! I consider all 3 of my purchase bargains! -
Show Us Your Atlas Books - Have A Cigar
PovertyRow replied to Silver Surfer's topic in Golden Age Comic Books
I have had almost every Atlas pre-hero horror book but I just do not remember the cover. It is absolutely amazing and I am now on the hunt for a nice mid-range to add to my collection. Stunning and a bit reminiscent of the scene from Universal's 1945 HOUSE OF DRACULA where Lon Chaney finally gets locked in a jail cell during the full moon so his transformation into the Wolf Man can be observed by Dr. Edelmann and others. Interesting twist to that cover is what one would assume is a full moon is actually Earth. Intriguing! -

Pardon the crappy pic. Book is buried in a box. Was attracted to it because of my affinity to old horror films!

Not to disagree but I disagree! "Rarest" certainly has a place but also a meaning. It would be a disservice to just plop any random GA Rom book there and would, by the powers that be, dilute the very topic itself!

Sweet. As my avatar suggests, I agree with your assessment of an Egyptian theme! -
We have Rare Romance and Baker Romance but there is no overall GA Romance topic, unless the search really IS broked! We have GA Horror, Crime, etc. but not a general GA Romance so I am being brazen as a good romance book should be. Just picked this one up. The title has many interesting scenarios in their pre-code offerings! Hi-School Romance #12 (Harvey 1951) PS - if the search really IS off please direct me to the GA Romance topic and I will move this one there!

Berkeley Comic Show Saturday, June 18

Definitely looking forward to this. Hopefully will add to my GA Good Girl acquisitions! -
Been wanting to get some Dagar Desert Hawk for some time. This was a favorite title back in the day for me. A shockingly good MCS eBay BIN. Could not believe $185 for a CGC 6.0. Granted some foxing on the top of the front cover but the way I see it, Foxing on Fox books with a couple of Foxes on the cover is appropriate!

The typical fading, especially in the reds (magenta and yellow inks) and sometimes the blues (cyan ink) in some of the publishers is due to what are called "fugitive pigments" or "fugitive inks". Fiction House is especially prone to this due to their use of fugitive pigments. These are inks that are especially prone to fading from environmental factors such as humidity, heat light etc. I don't see this as a typical "defect" but more a "manufacturing defect". I think of it as I would a miswrap, which usually does not impact the grade. Fugitive pigments and miswraps do not impact the structural integrity of the book but both are obvious enough that the individual collector can readily discern them, regardless of the number grade, and come to their own conclusion as to the desirability of the book. For me, especially with the Fiction House etc. GA, I will take a lower numeric grade with a good color strike over a higher grade with typical fading.

Recreating missing logo stats
PovertyRow replied to menard10's topic in Comic Book Grading and Restoration Issues
If you are looking to reproduce original art the "stat" is short for "photostat". It is done in a "stat camera" which allows you to adjust magnification or reduction of the image size. Very common in my day in the advertising and printing fields. (My first good job was as a stat camera operator). The paper is similar to thin glossy photo paper and is light sensitive. It is held against the head of the camera via a vacuum and the light source can be either overhead for opaque art or from below for transparencies. After the exposure it is run through a developing machine with rollers. To use it the image is cut to remove the excess paper and run through a waxer, which applies a layer of wax to the back. This allows it to be positioned on the original are board. You often see these yellowed due to the wax and also the relative instability of the art itself over time. -
Thanks again. I am shocked CGC found this acceptable as a finished product. Now I am still waiting on 3 Economy Grading books (Marvel Tales #1 from 1964, Strange Tales #169 (1st Brother Voodoo) and Spotlight #12. They were sent along with these 7 Moderns on 9/29/21. I know the two different tiers will arrive at different times. I got the 7 Moderns back on 2/19/22 (143 calendar days). It has been 195 calendar days so far for the three Economy books. I wonder when these will be coming back. I hope they will be a different set of graders/handlers for these pre-1975 books! I do fear the grades for them!

Disney+'s MOON KNIGHT series starring Oscar Isaac (2022)
PovertyRow replied to philsbackpack's topic in The Movie Forum
Same here. Being an old time MK fan I was afraid they would muck this up. And while they did to an extent as I really recognize little from the original MK, it really engaged me. Enjoyed it a lot and feel the old MK refs etc will be more manifest as the series progresses. I'm really looking forward to the next episode. Sadly I've gotten so tired of the myriad comic book based shows and movies lately can't get through most of them. For me this began with Wonder Woman 1984 (still only half through it) and carried on to Black Widow (same - made it half way), and shows like Falcon, Bobba Fett and even later eps of Mandalorian. At least I still can go back to Ant Man, Guardians, Deadpool and their original ilk and enjoy them every bit as much as when I first saw them. So here's hoping MK gets the job done! -
Thanks Joey. I really think I missed that tideline. Seems a lot more faint than many but still no excuse. I am still concerned about some other defects I do not recall but regardless tht tideline does impact. So I will take the hit for that. Woulod never have sub'd it had I spotted it. As far as the Spotlight #32 goes, no question those bends/folds would have been pressed out. I have to wonder if they were caused during the encapsulation at CGC.
