  1. C2E2 is in Chicago right? That would make for way too much driving, but the other two are definitely possible! I just wish they were a bit later in the year as it's hard to predict how the roads will be for me in March.
  2. That's a good point. I guess my plan was if there was a consensus that a certain con was amazing I would look into what I could stop and see on my way there and figure out if it was worth it or not. But realistically people's suggestions are probably going to be all over the map (literally) and I will likely only have a couple weeks so I'll probably be sticking to the western states.
  3. Hey guys, I live in Canada, near Calgary. I go to the Calgary Comic Expo every year but I've heard from some of the dealers that the US has better conventions. I'm also thinking of taking a couple weeks and doing a road trip into the US next summer so I figured why not hit up a comic con while I do it!? The problem is I really don't know what comic con would be best for comics (I'm not really interested in celebrities or toys or other merch, just comics). I've heard San Diago Comic Con, while huge, has become more of an entertainment expo and less about the comics. What are your guys favourite cons for buying comics? Thanks again!
  4. I'd be interested if any Canadian bordies know a cheap place to buy bags/boards as well. So far I've been buying them through my LCS as I haven't seen them cheap online.
  5. I mean Venom became insanely popular in the 90's. I'm sure his appearance in video games and cartoons helped, but that all came about because the comic books he were in were so popular.
  6. I just have notes in my phone that I browse through. I always have it on me, so it's handy dandy and ready to go. The only problem is I ran into a dealer who thought I was looking up the comic on ebay. I was just seeing if it was crossed off my list yet.
  7. I have no idea if the copy is legitimate or not but I don't think the story is totally impossible. Think of it this way: Grandmas comic-collecting-relative dies. She's garage sailing or throwing out his possessions but recalls something about the first Superman comic being worth money so she pulls the two copies of it that she sees out and sells/trashes the rest of his/her comics. (I'm picturing her just chucking Amazing Fantasy 15 and Detective comics 27 in the trash) Unlikely? Yes. Impossible? No.
  8. Says there is nothing crazy but shows Detective comics 359? Edit: Oh, I see it's a reprint.
  9. Should have taken it 'out of the package' right then and there and blown his mind.
  10. As soon as she said that you say "It's all aboot playing it cool, eh?" and start eating poutine.
  11. I have long hair and my girlfriend is British but living in Canada which really seems to confuse them, so we get pulled in every time. I've had my vehicle searched a couple times. If you declare everything you won't get in trouble. Though I guess that's tough to do if you bought a bunch of comics at a convention as you wont have a receipt. Maybe just say you got them for really cheap at a garage sale? p.s. I hear it's just going to get worse once Marijuana is legalized in Canada. I was with a friend who was asked if she smoked and she answered truthfully: "Yeah I used to but I haven't in years" and suddenly our vehicle was getting searched. It's going to be tough in a couple months not to say "Weed? You mean that drug that's legal in Canada, a bunch of States and more then 50% of the population has tried? Nope never touched the stuff"
  12. Similarly a local guy was selling a collection he inherited, there was some decent Bronze age stuff, not much silver, and he wouldn't give me a price for the whole lot. So I dug through and picked out 30 or so comics I wanted. He then expects me to sit around and wait while he looks them all up on ebay to come up with a price. I try to tell him he needs to look at 'sold listings' but he isn't listening to me and is showing me listings that are priced way too high, so I keep passing on them. Finally I say 'look sorry man I'm just not looking to spend that much I was hoping these would be a couple dollars each." He then looks through my stack and without rhyme or reason (he knows nothing about comics) pulls out 10 or so comics and says those are two bucks each. One of those comics was Amazing Spider-man Annual 2, the rest were just random bronze age stuff. Oh! I also had another guy who was selling his comics 2/$5. Well in the stack I find Silver Surfer 14,15,16 in prestine condition. There were a couple other 15 cent marvels as well I can't remember right now. Naturally I pull those out along with a bunch of newer Deadpools that weren't anything special. The guy looks through my stack and says "Deadpools hot right now, these are five bucks each". So I put the Deadpools back and pay 2/$5 for all the 15 cent Marvels. lol.
  13. Meh, that's easy to say, but you gotta respect that he saw an opportunity, raised the funds required, and went all in. And keep in mind the at the time, everyone probably thought he was a maniac for spending that much money on comic books.
  14. Are there any other stories of gigantic finds like this? I loved reading about this. Also, I feel like if someone found that collection nowadays everyone on the internet would call them a horrible person for 'ripping that person off'. If someone is dumb enough to sell something for way less then it's worth that's all on them in my opinion.
  15. woof that's friggen ruff! My dog just likes to come up to me and try to lick comics while I'm handling them.
  16. Man that was poetry. But maybe therein lies the answer. Marvel/DC need an app that kids will engage with that encourages reading. I'm picturing a Pokemon go style app where kids track down Superheroes in the real world and have them fight each other. Finding new super-heroes unlocks motion comics, old animation episodes, behind the scenes movie footage ect. Support comic stores by having the app populate collectible characters around stores that sell comic books. Damn, not to toot my own horn but I love that idea. EDIT: to piggyback onto that, have certain characters or abilities that are only accessible through scanning a real life comic book, or puchasing a digital one.
  17. A X-23 movie could be great. You could even incorporate some of the OG X-Men characters that are assumed dead. The problem is that movie would have to exist outside of the MCU, which would really confuse movie audiences, especially if they were rebooting the X-Men inside the MCU.
  18. PREACH! Also the seperation between TV and film is annoying. While I love the Netflix Daredevil, Jessica Jones and Punisher series, I would like to see them on the big screen. Also someone should be able to write a decent Ghost Rider movie, right?
  19. I'm not a huge X-Men fan so that's a tough question. The stand out characters for me would be: Jean Grey/Phoenix Gambit Storm Mystique (maybe overplayed in current x-men films) Magneto (maybe overplayed in current x-men films) And of course, Wolverine. But I wouldn't suggest that be one of the opening movies. Throw in a resurrected Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch for the X-Men movie and introduce Professor X and you've got a team.
  20. Oh god my soul died a little hearing that. I'll take them! Just point me in the direction of this dumpster.
  21. As much as I love X-Men 1, 2, Days of Future Past and Logan I think the X-Men need a reboot. The timeline is so convoluted and confusing and all the actors have changed. Plus it wouldn't make sense to have the X-Men and the Avengers suddenly existing in the same universe. Especially with Quicksilver. I say Marvel follows it's own MCU phase 1 model and put out individual Hero movies, that build to an X-Men film. That way you can develop deep and interesting characters. As far as Deadpool, I think he could hop into the MCU universe as long as he acknowledges it with a joke or two.
  22. I go back to how I got hooked on comics as a kid in the 90s. Grocery stores and convenience stores. The only reason I started reading Spidey was because my mom bought me a comic to keep me busy while she was grocery shopping. Then a couple weeks later at a convenience store I decided to spend my candy money on another Spider-man comic because I liked the first one so much. Here I was with part 1 and part 3 of a six part story (Blood Brothers for anyone curious). For the next month I would ride my bike every day to the pharmacy and convenience store and check the racks for the other parts of the story. Eventually I got everything except part 2. My parents then drove me to a comic store where I found part 2. Next thing you know they are taking me there once a month and I was hooked! The point of that story is there is no entry point for kids nowadays. There are no comics at 7-11 or the grocery store. I think the solution is simple. Produce a weekly comic with multiple stories (For Marvel maybe an Avengers story, Spidey story, rotating story featuring a different hero every issue). Price it as cheaply as possible, and stock it in every grocery store, pharmacy and convenience store you can. They may not make a profit off that comic but they will be grabbing a whole new generation of readers.
  23. Wait do contestants pick a prize they want to try and win? How does that work? Sorry it's my first time.
