My problem with firing up another run of early ASM has always been that I just don't enjoy owning low grade copies.
I really feel like 6.5-7 is about where I want to be, and I'm just now too farout of the running on early ASM prices.
So I'm watching the qualified books that I like. I'm not ok with amateur color touch, but I think the one edge trimmed, if it looks ok, I can stomach.
What I'm really ok with are the staples replaced, or cover married books. I just don't care.
This week, I pulled the trigger on what was always my favorite EARLY cover issue.
I'll put a picture up when it arrives.
These photos of the run I sold just rip me up.

By the way Dan, didn't you think 116 would have been a wonderfully exclusive place to start the run?
It's such an awesome cover!

More like the great white whale. It may never appear - I don't think there is one. I may break down and buy the OW/W one in the current Comiclink auction and resubmit it.
I think you're right. I saw that one. It was always a favorite cover of mine. That's a pretty nice looking one.
A few years ago, the white 9.6 old label Western Penn sold for about $170, and I thought is was just beautiful.
That was only about $50 more than 9.6s 10 years ago.
I haven't watched if it was resubbed??

I put the MJ figure on the post card. Thought it would be a good comparison. Wasn't trying to trick anyone. Should have made that clear.

That's what I had handy.
When are we going to see your white #147?

Thanks! Yes you’re correct, many of the books were reholdered.
Altogether it took approximately two years to put together. Required consolidating my collection completely and alot of focus/discipline as far as spending. I may decide to still fill in the gaps I have between AF15 and ASM 20 but at least I feel like I procured all of the main keys. I have all of my books posted here:

I absolutely love the whiteness of your SS 50.
I love your collection because it's an example of what I had when I was very young.
By the mid 80s, my run was #3 to the mid 200s. I kept that run going until over #400.
I would bet that my early books averaged 5.5 to 6.5.
What killed my desire to finish, was in the early 80s I brought what I had to Moondog while he was in Mt Prospect.
He broke the bad news to me that my #3 was missing the pin up page, my #5 had been cleaned, and my #9 was trimmed.
That instant education on restoration, and my inability to trust that what I was buying was all I wanted them to be, kept me from ever really pursuing AF 15 and ASM 1 and 2 for many years.
Well, there were a couple of other things too.
I'm going to try to find the pictures that I had of #3 to #50.

Anyone know where the most recent 9.6 sale on GPA, under $9,700, occurred?
Looks like an OW/W, graded about 11 years ago.

I wouldn’t say I’m obsessed with them
(white pages yes, 5.0s no) but thanks for thinking of me
. I really just enjoyed the challenge of putting together a linear key run between AF15 and ASM20. After that my ASM keys are all white pages in ascending grades between issues 25-361. Nevertheless, there are worse things to be synonymous with, so
But here are a couple of pics anyway inspired by the ASM50 above:
This is just flat out awesome.
How long did this take? I'm assuming you had a bunch reholdered?

Well if you didn't like the CC one I don't know if you'll like this one. You sure you don't like the CC? Looks great to me
Thanks. Didn't come up in my search.
i do like the CC book better than this one, just not enough at the price point.
I get why that's hard to understand, it's pretty.
I love my new king size annual 9. I'll post some photos when they come in.
I hope the 104 is not as yellow as it looks.
I'll probably have about 15 to reholder soon.

There have been so few 9.2 sales of 104 the last few years, and no live listings of 106 on GPA.
This may take a while.

That's very pretty. I never should have sold my run ten years ago. My 9.2 White back then rivaled your 9.4. At least I can still look at the scan on my computer.
This time I've really avoided OW books, but most of the wraps are as pretty as the run that I sold back then.
Oh, the 104 that I used to have.
Even now, I spot a few of the OW-W books that I'll be looking to upgrade.
This made my day.
My old label #104 that I sold ten years ago, went on sale today, and I grabbed it.
I'm spending too much money on bronze ASM again this winter. A nice 113 9.0, along with an old label Annual #9 9.2 white, and ASM 10, 16, 40, 50 and 76.
My goal was piecing together my old NM- 100-151 run. I gave up on an ASM 129 9.0 I bought last year that had foxing and just didn't like, so I'm down to 106, 121, 129, 137, 138 and 151.
Now that I look at my old scan, I'm hoping it hasn't been sitting in the sun for ten years.

My eBay issue is only yesterday, but not with ebay itself, but a seller. He had a ASM 122 6.0 w listed for $175 obo. I throw out a $125 offer, and yes it is a bit low, but I wouldn't call it lowball. 10 hrs later, I get the declined offer notification. ?. No counter? The best offer feature is for negotiation.
. He had a fish on the line, why not throw back a short counter offer, like $170 and let's see where it goes?
Mention to him that an 8.5 sold for $200 within the last month.

I bought every issue of Spider Man that I needed to fill in between #100 and #120 at the first Chicago Comicon at the Playboy Tower in '76.
I must have spent close to $30 that day. Well, my Dad did.
It was such a cool feeling for a 12 year old kid.
These photos just nail it.

An old label OW sold on Heritage in 2003 for $86K.

I'm still confused about this supposed copy that sold for $700K a year ago or so. Where did it sell? Does GPA give any details? It wasn't at auction or on any site for direct purchase. So can only take it with a grain of salt.
It's still, what, $340K more than a copy sold for on Heritage about 4 years ago??
Not to mention $700K more than 17 years ago. Neither is aesthetically flawless.

I sure wish there was still a chance that I could buy the kind of copy that I wanted.
I would call that day around the time that you could get a nice 5.5 or 6.0 for $15K
Not that long ago really.
Oh well.

Incredible Hulk #181 - is it *that* red-hot?
in Bronze Age Comic Books

It was on Heritage, and the funkiness of the wrap kind of justified the much lower price in my opinion.
