Sounds good. I sort of worked myself into building a raw NM run through 700, to include most of the variants. I was getting raws for the common books, and getting CGC'd for the keys and lower numbers (especially below 100). I had an "amazing" collection by my standards. Not so by some of the BSDs on here. It was easy to sell the CGC ASMs from 10 on up. Seems like the market has been cooling... Hard to resist the lower ASMs...
-
Yep... I know there are some out there trying to build CGC 9.8 W sets of later ASMs. Just too much space to store them all. And of course, the time and expense to get them submitted. That said, I have submitted some books specifically because it's so hard to sell them unless they are graded. If I tell someone a comic is 9.6 and ask for $30, someone might offer $10-15. If I pay $40 to get it graded and shipped to MyComics, someone might pay $65. So, I can make $25 versus $10-15. The math doesn't add when it's a lower dollar books, obviously...

Same page... Just meant that you can find them but it's a lot of work and time and money. When I was still buying, I loved finding a collector with top-notch books who could help me fill in tricky books, even if they are "common." It's WAY easier to find a hundred ASM 300s in 9.6/9.8 than one truly NM Barbie 36.

Born in early '60s...

Not sure where you're getting your price point from. I never offered this grouping of comics. Even at true NM, $3K is way overpriced for raws in this range (400-499). Agreed re being out of wack from time to time on pricing.

More fun... Maybe I'm just an honest and life-long collector who's trying to get something reasonable for truly high-grade comics. I collected Spider-Man comics and comics with Spidey on the cover, generally no later than 1990 for the cover appearances. Some of those you may consider drek, but it's not easy to find Marvel Barbie 36 and Alf 47 (or Avengers #11!) in tight NM condition. Maybe try and not assume the worst in people like myself, who have been on these boards since before some of you were born. Maybe... Or just assume I'm a jerk and maybe miss out on some great books. Regardless, have a great day and happy collecting!

Funny... Not me... I've been on the boards since near the beginning. I never had a kudos page, but plenty of folks here can vouch for me. I've made many purchases over the years. Sold a ton through Bob Storms. Bought and sold via eBay as "mlovest"... 100% feedback. Also, love to see you get true NM copies for $3-5 on Craigslist or eBay. Many will be junk with spine dings and worse. Many likely not even bagged and boarded. Buy 100 and keep a handful...

Depends upon how the collection was put together. My collection was put together over several decades. Meticulous searching of boxes (at stores and shows), eBay, forum buys, Storms, Reece, Sulipa, others. I only purchase high-grade comics, except for some not NM key Marvels, which I no longer have. One of the reasons I stopped collecting is how expensive early ASMs were getting. I simply can't justify $Ks for key comics with a wife and three kids. I generally only read re-print book versions of older comics (Marvel Masterworks or simialr), and my NM purchases went right into Mylite-2s with half- or full-backs. Books I've sent in for CGC grading have generally done very well, with average grades of my NMs closer to 9.5 (ave). Always a miss here or there, but also a good number of home runs in the 9.8 range. Never had a 9.9... My two best were two eBay purchases...ASM 42 shipped in a manila envelope and came back 9.6 W, and an ASM Annual 4, back 9.8 W. Both auction wins as NM copies...long time ago.

I used to buy from Mile High regularly in the mid 90's. When I lived in Colorado Springs, they had a satellite store in the Springs. I would have the local rep bring down a big stack of comics from the mothership in Denver from my then large want list of ASMs, SSMs, MTU, etc. Then, I would cherry pick only the true NM copies, and he would give me a big 50% or so discount. Nothing awesome, but mostly fairly common stuff, all Marvels. I would get a pretty good deal because I could pick only NM books. Their grading is always off, and they would argue they have too many books to properly grade them. I never met Chuck, but I did go to the big Denver shop a couple of times. Haven't purchased anything from them in years, as their raws are or were so over graded.

Thank you, sir! Since you've been here for a month longer than me, I will relent. Thank you for your inputs!

You can find NM ASMs in auction for $3-5 on eBay? Then spend $5-10 for postage...plus deal with all the over-graded ? I'm not an unknown seller on the internet, which is why I was looking for someone in the LA area. I would expect a local to actually look over the books in person. I've been a serious collector for decades, and a reputable dealer would not sell ASMs in NM or higher condition for $3-5 from 225 to 400. You can find these ASMs below NM for more on multiple high-rep dealer websites...High Grade, Doug Sulipa, Dale Roberts, Superworld, etc. True, not many seeking a WoS 39 in NM.

To be clear, I am NOT asking for or expecting to get guide for my collection, and I know that's not going to happen. Stormflora asked for FMV, so I added what CovrPrice calculates for the full set. All I said above is I'm not going to sell for pennies on the dollar, and I am not is that sort of a hurry. I'm not selling because I need the money today, but I'm moving on from comics to focus on my family and other hobbies. I loved collecting for decades, and I will always have warm memories of comics from my youth through most of my life. I have sold hundreds of high-grades graded comics to date, some through dealers and some on my own. I actually did pretty good selling statues online via eBay...much better than I originally thought. I know it's hard work. I also know no one is going to knock on my door with a bucket of cash to pay guide for these books. I appreciate the inputs, and I did get some contacts from folks in the LA area. In the future, I will probably blow some of these books out at good prices. Keep your eyes peeled!

Roger that on the eBay selling. I will say I have found many gems on eBay over the years, but the number of schemers thee just continues to rise. Never forget a preacher's son I connected with on eBay. He ended up selling me dozens of super high-grade '70s/'80s semi-key Marvels. I paid close to guide at the time, and many graded out at 9.6/9.8 when submitted years ago. Made me happy, and the guy was really happy with what I paid him. I will probably need to bring some of these to the boards.

Quick check of eBay has a number of WoS sets that are nearly complete for sale around $300, as you noted. However, they are not hand-picked, in Mylars and half-backs, and they are clearly not in NM condition. All I saw were pictures of piles of raw books claimed to be NM or "mostly" VF/NM condition. And I am definitely not trying to get full CovrPrive ap price for these books. CovrPrice appears to be well under guide price with its 9.2 highest grade for raws. CovrPrice lists my almost compete WoS set at $789 for the 126-comic partial set. No one on these boards would sell a truly NM set of 126 WoS comics in Mylites/half-backs for $150. I get your point I am likely going to have to split my collection up, but I was hoping I could find someone who would want a large part(s) or the whole thing in the LA area. What's the cost of the Mylars and half-backs alone for 126 comics?
-
And yes, I have been on these boards since just about the beginning! Awesome place to find great books and learn a ton from other collectors like yourself.

I understand your comments. I realize selling modern drek is pennies on the dollar. Some of my books would go in a dollar box; however, NM ASMs, MTUs, lower Conans, etc., are not dollar box comics. Collectorz allows you to input your comics as graded or raw, and their prices are via CovrPrice, which is conservative and prices as graded or raw. Again, mine are all raw. I'm sure no one on here would sell ASMs from 200-500 and higher for pennies on the dollar in NM and higher condition. I spent 35 years pulling this collection together, and I've always been very picky. My earlier ASM raws often graded at 9.6s and 9.8s (121, 122, 129, 300, etc.). Pull out a price guide and see the prices for 9.2 ASMs...these are not for graded books. For a Spider-Man collector, I never wanted to get most of the copies graded as it takes up too much space. In the collection, I've got around 650 ASMs between 200-700 with many of the variants, and that would be crazy expensive to grade, plus all of the time involved. They would also fill a small room if graded...
-
Collectorz (using CovrPrice) pegs it at $42,000, all input as 9.4 raw. Most of this is obviously in the ASMs. There are 653 separate AMS issues, plus another 20 or so annuals. 1,822 separate comics.
-
I would love to find a collector or two that love Spidey! The ASMs are such great books. Love to find them a happy home(s).
-
I'm working up a number. I still have to load the total collection into Comic Collector, which uses relatively conservative pricing for raw books. Much lower than even 9.2s from the Price Guide.
-
Yes, they are awesome for graded books, but they aren't going to offer enough to cover postage. I've sold some lots with them, but the charges are high and bidders are expecting really good deals.
-
That is true indeed!
-
That's a good idea re reaching out to the local shops. I haven't bought true moderns in years, so I don't have an ongoing relationship with any comic shops here in LA. Moved around a lot while I was doing my modern collecting as I was in the Air Force.
-
Yes, but I'm getting out of collecting, so I'm not looking to trade them. I know it's not going to be easy. Maybe I can find someone to list them for me?

Folks, I have about 1,800 high-grade, mostly NM and higher, comics I want to sell. Nothing awesome in this grouping as I've been selling off the CGC'd and keys separately, but they are very choice, high-grade comics. Most are Spider-Man related comics including all of the obvious titles through the early '90s. Do any of your know someone reputable I could work with in the LA area to unload some or all of them? I'm not looking for pennies on the dollar, but a reasonable deal. Shipping these would obviously be expensive, but I did work with a dealer in the past where I delivered a number of boxes at a local show. 99% of the comics are in Mylars and half- or full-backs, and 99% are Marvels. Thank you much. Hope you all had a terrific Thanksgiving! V/R, Mike
