  1. the major defects are the 1/4" front cover tear, the approx 1/4" piece missing from back cover, color breaking creases and spine tics, lots of cover wear and non-color breaking bends 3.5 - 4.0
  2. If I recall correctly, many of these Heroic comics have some great Frank Frazetta work, as well as a huge 1 page anti -drug ad by Frazetta. I Don't remember which issues...
  3. I purchased several PCH books from Paul. The books arrived very quickly for international shipping and securely packed. The books were exactly as described and pictured, and stored in Mylar. Great communication, a true gentleman, and a professional seller. Would buy from him again without hesitation.
  4. Hello Boardies, I recently came across a very interesting specimen on the Bay. It's ASM #1 with a Blue conserved label due to a professionally cleaned cover, BUT it also has a married cover. The seller is very straight-forward about this. So if the book only had a married cover, it would be a green qualified label which would be valued at roughly half of the apparent value (varies by the specific book and grade, i know) of a Blue universal label. However since the book is also conserved with a professionally cleaned cover, that conservation supersedes the Green label qualified status and the book gets a conserved Blue label with the grey stripe on top. While it's clear what has been done to the book as it's listed on the label, i'm curious as to your opinions on how such a book would be valued, particularly on auction sites like eBay, Heritage, Comiclink, mycomicshop.com, etc where there is a high degree of emphasis on a CGC Blue label. My opinion is that since the book has BOTH a married cover and (detectable) professional conservation, its actual value is no more than that of a married Green label book of the same apparent grade (and perhaps even lower depending on the conservation). However, it would seen that the conserved Blue label with grey stripe actually appears more similar to a Blue universal label and thus may actually sell for significantly more than a Green label book. Would love to hear your thoughts. -Dave here's the link on ebay: https://www.ebay.com/itm/THE-AMAZING-SPIDER-MAN-1963-1-CGC-5-0-CONSERVED-GRADE-FIRST-ISSUE/253957601720?_trkparms=aid%3D222007%26algo%3DSIM.MBE%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D20140131123730%26meid%3D58e122f50e0241dd8d208f89020f8bbb%26pid%3D100167%26rk%3D2%26rkt%3D15%26sd%3D253209939240%26itm%3D253957601720&_trksid=p5411.c100167.m2940 Note: This seems like a method that some sellers may use to further enhance the value of big ticket books. I'm neither condoning or condemning this, it's merely an observation.
  5. I purchased a slab from Dillon. The book arrived quickly and very securely packed. Good communication. Would buy from him again without hesitation. Thanks!
  6. Here's a link to a CGC 6.0 on ebay. The 6.0 actually looks a step up from the OPs pics, so it may be closer to a 5.5 than a 6.0. https://www.ebay.com/itm/Marvel-Premiere-1-CGC-6-0-FN-SIGNED-STAN-LEE-1st-HIM-WARLOCK-SOUL-GEM-THOR-HULK/302379135124?hash=item4667337094:g:zWIAAOSwu~5bpL~Z:sc:USPSPriority!06903!US!-1:rk:5:pf:0
  7. I'm with you on this. 6.0 Overstreet F 6.0 allows moderate color breaking creases (check), blunted corners (these are mostly sharp), minor staining, soiling, discoloration(light tanning of back cover), foxing, minor spine roll, 1/4" spine split or severe color break, minor staple tears, slight stress lines (check), minor rust migration. tan to brown pages (this is better). This copy has a few of these defects, and lacks many of the more common defects for the grade. Unfortunately, this book is a notoriously terrible presenter with the dark shiny black cover, and therefore usually gets dogged worse than it really should. I own 4 copies of this book that are relatively higher grade (7.0 - 8.5), but I still don't like the way any of them look.
  8. Agree with this. Lots of general minor wear and accumulation of small defects with the back cover tear and dents being the major defects. No major structural problems, no large color breaking creases, no missing pieces, minor soiling, some waviness and dents/bends in the back cover. CGC grade 4.5 with a decent shot at a 5.0. would probably benefit from a clean and press for a grade bump
  9. well loved copy there. heavy cover wear, abundance of small spine and back cover tears, soiling. going to assume that tape repairs at least a 2" spline split. CGC 1.8 - 2.0
  10. nice looking book with vivid colors. With this degree of chipping, you're now in pieces missing territory. There's about a 3/4" triangle piece missing from the right cover edge and a 1/4" triangle shaped piece missing from the top cover edge, and there's plenty of chipping. There's also moderate soiling on the inside cover. 3 long color breaking creases on the front cover right corner, a 1/2" tear on the back cover. The missing pieces and soiling are the determining defect here. An overstreet G/VG 3.0 allows moderate soiling and a triangle shaped missing piece from 1/4" to 1/2" can be missing out of the corner or edge, or a missing 1/8" to 1/4" square is also acceptable. CGC is generally more lenient on missing pieces and chipping, but harsher on soiling and stains than Overstreet. CGC 3.0 (a great presenter for the grade)
  11. Hi Frank, my mistake. You are correct that all Superior comics were printed in Canada and then distributed. Technically all Superior comics are the Canadian version, since there is no other version. Interesting, I came to this erroneous understanding through a Canadian comic dealer who sold me some books including the Sheena #1 Canadian edition and the SM 3. He told me that the prices were lower than the US versions because the US versions are the most sought after and commanded top price while Canadian and UK versions usually sell at a discount. I didn't dig any further since I was getting those cool books at a good discount
  12. I'm fairly confident that the discoloration on the back cover of Marvel Premiere 15 is soiling and not foxing, and should be able to be cleaned. If you look at the spine creases, the color inside the creases are gleaming white while the flat areas are discolored, indicating soiling due to contact with a dirty surface. Thoughts?
  13. Hulk 182: minor wear along top cover edge and both top corners, tiny color breaking spine tics, some light soiling along the back cover spine edge. beautiful copy CGC grade: 9.2 Marvel Premiere 15: minor wear along the top cover edge, slightly rounded corners, small color breaking spine tics, light soiling of whites on iron fist logo and on entire back cover, multiple small spine creases on back cover, long vertical bend/creases on back cover near top of spine and left edge of back cover. CGC grade 8.5 - a clean and press would definitely help this one
  14. Some of my favorite recent purchases (partial cross-post with the Fiction House thread): Sheena 1: iconic comic of first ever female hero/character to have her own eponymous comic book. Zolnerowich cover too. Junbo/Jungle/Sheena: The Sheena comic in the middle of the Jumbo and Jungle is interesting as it's Sheena #1 Canadian Edition (same cover and content as Sheena #5 US edition). The Jungle comics 98 was used in SOTI. Jumbo 95 is also a cool book: one of the few books with a nude (partial) Sheena panel for all the GGA lovers out there! SM 1 was tough to find a decent copy at a reasonable price. SM 3 is actually the Canadian edition and looks the same as a US edition (not noticeably inferior printing and material) Weird Tales: love this Brundage cover! Margaret Brundage is the Godmother of pulp painted GGA covers, some of the most iconic and salacious of the era, preceding comic GGA by a decade. Capt Aero 25: classic LB Cole sci-fi / aviation cover, beat but complete and cheap. Can this book even be had in decent shape for less than a king's ransom?
  15. Few recent pickups. The Sheena comic in the middle of the Jumbo and Jungle is interesting: Sheena #1 Canadian Edition (same cover and content as Sheena #5 US edition) Jumbo 95 is also a cool book: one of the few books with a nude (partial) Sheena panel for all the GGA lovers out there!
  16. Sheena #1, finally found a decent one at a decent price! The first female character/hero ever to have her own comic and a Zolnerowich cover to boot! doesn't get much more iconic.
  17. While we're on Weird Tales, here are some more iconic covers from the Godmother herself, Margaret Brundage. There was a flood of outrage aimed at her salacious covers because everyone assumed she was a male as she signed her works with "M Brundage." The publisher finally revealed that M Brundage was actually female and response was mixed. Her covers are some of the most iconic in pulp history. Unfortunately, she died destitute and alone. Fascinating figure. The first cover is actually one of my favorite pulps (despite being relatively tame in the GGA department) due to it's eerie beauty. I was lucky enough to fine one that's not deteriorating to bits as these pulps tend to do. The second is a favorite for obvious reasons.
  18. the spine split is the killer on this one. water damage and soiling are acceptable in VG books. By technical Overstreet grading a GD 2.0 may have up to a 2" spine split while a Fr/GD may have a spine split between 2" and 2/3 the length of the book. this book has about 1/2 book length split so that would put it in the FR/GD 1.5 Overstreet category. CGC grading does not necessarily follow the same standard when dealing with spine splits and missing pieces, and there are verifiable examples demonstrating this discrepancy. CGC grade 2.5 - 3.0
  19. interesting grading challenge. The front cover is beautiful, aside from the wear and small color breaks at the top edge of the front cover. few small color breaking spine tics. back cover, aside from the stamps, is pristine and clean. structurally that book is a F 6.0. As for those stamps, while slightly unsightly they served a purpose in the retail process at the time, and my guess is that they will be treated similarly to excessive distributor ink, and maybe get a half grade downgrade. CGC grade 5.5
  20. nice book. It shows moderate wear with multiple small tears and color breaks on the top front and back cover edge, multiple color breaking tics on spine, small color breaking creases on cover and corner, a couple non-color breaking bends on front cover and more on the back, light soiling on back cover, rounded and worn corners. The weird jagged crease is a production defect and should not affect the grade. In this case it's actually the back cover that's holding the grade back, as the front cover presents like a 4.5 - 5.0 4.0 as is, a clean and press could get this to a 4.5
  21. Copy A: areas of color loss and wear on spine, small color breaking bend at top of cover, moderate soiling of spine and back cover (F 6.0 is allowed minor soiling) CGC grade 5.5 Copy B: small areas of cover wear / color loss, worn lower spine corner, couple color breaking creases with largest being on Reed's leg about 1", larger non-color breaking creases on right cover edge and by Reeds hand CGC grade 6.5 as is. possible 7.0 with a press to remove the larger non-color breaking creases. (F/VF 7.0 is allowed minor cover wear and moderate color break) Awesome book, art and story. A sleeper that may catch fire due to MCU!
  22. JUMBO COMICS #142 8.0 OW/WP $110. i'll take this beauty @ 10% off
  23. at 25% off. Would buy more of these great books at 25% off, but just picked up a key i've been watching.
  24. Fantastic Four 53 CGC 6.5 per PM
