  1. Hi Boardies, This is Crackajack Funnies giveaway (1937). Interesting book that I was finally able to get a copy of. Interesting because it was initially a free giveaway by Malt-o-meal (who, what??) and printed on newsprint. Generally meant as a throwaway item. These were printed without any gloss on the cover. Book is complete, staples are in excellent shape with mild discoloration and no rust. Cover and all pages firmly attached. Thought I'd give you something unusual to grade over the weekend. Cheers! note: my grade is hidden as I prefer to have your uninfluenced opinion
  2. This is another case of "Technical Overstreet" grade =/= CGC grade. Overstreet grading: 7.0 slight staple tears allowed 6.0 - 5.0 minor staple tears allowed 4.0 moderate staple tears allowed 3.0 Cover may be loose or even detached at one staple. There have been numerous discussions with an abundance of evidence that CGC grading does not follow Overstreet on several major issues like staple pulls and missing pieces, but rather employs a formula something like this: Overall general appearance grade - (defects x fuzzy grading factor) = CGC grade. That is clearly what happened in this case. I would guess their grading went something like this: overall appearance 7.5 - (pulled cover staple x fuzzy batman #232 staple coefficient) = 6.5 CGC grade If interested, here is a link to a discussion with similar topic of CGC vs technical grading but regarding missing cover piece:
  3. Defects: slightly rounded corners, tiny color breaking dents on back cover leading edge (red area), back cover top edge (black area), and back cover bottom edge near corner (black area) 9.2
  4. Hi Ride the Tiger, What you're seeing on the left upper corner, and along the spine, and on various spots (around surfer's head and legs on the red background and the title) is color loss / transfer. this usually occurs when comics are stacked on each other + time + pressure + moisture + heat (or any combination of those) and the ink will be transferred off your book to the book on top of it. The colors lost from your book are likely on the back of another book. Here's an example of one of my books that was on the receiving end of such a color transfer. Look at the white title letters and the red color (likely from another copy of the same book) that was transferred onto the white letters. Grade for your book: 6.5
  5. Here's one you don't see too often. Crackajack funnies #nn giveaway (1937)
  6. For your viewing pleasure... the best tail light covers in the entire Jungle run, rivaling Jumbo #82 (in my humble opinion). And very cool color fashion ad on the back cover!
  7. Love the #98 SOTI cover! I just acquired one, waiting for it in the mail impatiently.
  8. my first thought: Why is Abomination in the FF logo?? That is one psychedelic cover, congrats! i'm at 4.5 since staples look discolored but not rusted, otherwise wear typical for the grade
  9. Yep. The water damage and water staining is the major defect that really kills the grade. I recently saw at a show a FF48 CGC 4.5 that looked at first glance like a 7.0, but grader notes listed a very light 2" water stain on the bottom of the cover that was barely appreciable without any waviness. Water stains are a grade killer apparently. 3.0 -3.5
  10. in addition to the spine tick in the middle, there appears to be a dust shadow in the white spidey logo in the bottom left corner, minor blunting of the corners. 9.0 with a shot at 9.2
  11. defects: 9 tiny color breaking spine tics, 2 small partial color breaking bends in the top edge of cover (or is that a tiny tear above the marvel logo? if a tear, then drop grade by 0.5). 9.0
  12. mid grade copy with good eye appeal, with strong colors, not too much cover wear. defects: color break crease upper right corner of cover, moderate wear with color break along top edge of cover and little bit on bottom edge of cover, multiple color breaking creases on the spine, and the biggie is the moderately large stain/soiling on the back cover (looks like it goes through part of the interior pages) 5.0 edit: now that i'm thinking about it again, I just posted on another PGM thread where I noted how harshly CGC graded an otherwise very nice FF48 for a barely perceptible 2" water stain on the front cover 4.5
  13. Major defects: blunted corners (particularly the right bottom corner), several spine tics (1 partial color breaking in upper left corner), light soiling on most of the white on the front and back cover, light tanning on bottom of back cover. 7.0 -7.5
  14. True. Although he could still change his mind and go with another venue. Either way i'd still recommend a supplemental insurance policy. The last thing you want to deal with is handing off those books to someone, even Heritage or some other reputable company, and have your book come back damaged (even slightly worse could mean big $$$) and then have to chase down every party in the chain of custody and try to get compensated for your loss.
  15. This. Selling those beautiful treasures raw is either: 1) leaving a huge amount of money on the table at auction, or 2) opening yourself up for a huge legal $h1t storm if someone were to buy one, submit it to a 3rd party grading company, and find out it's been restored or conserved. my As much as i'd love to suggest that you offer those beauties up to us Boardies at Overstreet guide price , it would be a huge disservice to your financial well-being for us to be anything but brutally honest here. Get thee to CGC for grading. Either courier those with a company that specializes in transporting valuable / fragile items, or have them packed by an expert and transport then yourself to CGC. Also, get an insurance policy on those books before you let them out of your sight. Either a separate policy with your existing homeowners policy (you will need a separate policy for those items), or specifically a collectibles insurance policy. There are several reputable ones that some board members use. here's a link: Best of luck to you. Keep us updated and let us know what you eventually did with the collection and how it went.
  16. The majors defects are the 1/8" tear on back cover and the small color breaking creases on spine, but also mild soiling of the lower back cover and front cover edge near the chipping. 6.0-6.5 presents better since major defects are on back cover and only noticeable close up on the front cover, so could very well grade higher with CGC using their "general appearance grade - defects = final grade" formula note: there has been extensive discussion on this forum regarding "technical Overstreet" grades and "CGC" grades, as these are 2 separate grading systems that share many similarities but differ significantly on some major issues
  17. I bought a CGC slabbed book and a raw book from Jared. Smooth transaction, books arrived well packed and exactly as described and shown in the pics. Great seller. Thank you!
  18. Great seller. I bought a slabbed X-men from Jerry and it arrived very quickly in perfect condition, and very well packed. Thank you!
  19. Purchased 2 SA CGC slabs (Avengers and Silver Surfer) from Greg. Smooth transaction, items were as described without any defects, arrived very quickly, and were packed very well. Thank you and will keep an eye on your future sales. Recommended!
  20. Thanks Thunsicker! That makes 2 examples already where CGC does not follow strict Overstreet grading guidelines and technical standards. It's useful for everyone to know this before making a decision to submit your books!
  21. This. And another one near the upper spine around the small yellow/orange box that's located above the orange box and closest to the spine. Wow, that is seriously picky.
  22. Took a second look at this after analyzing several other books with major defects. I'm modifying my previous grade based on additional research and criteria for rusty staples and rust migration found in Heritage Auctions interpretation of grading guidelines: https://comics.ha.com/tutorial/comics-grading.s?show=comicdefinitions 7.0 F/VF slight staple discoloration and minor rust migration allowed 6.0 (F) - 5.0 (VG/F) minor staple discoloration and minor rust migration allowed 4.0 VG staple discoloration and some (some= moderate?) rust migration allowed 3.0 G/VG Staples may be rusted or replaced and some rust migration allowed 2.0 GD Staples may be degraded, replaced or missing and rust migration allowed With a more objective second look, i'm downgrading this book. Grade: 3.0 Note: There is the possibility of CGC using its "general overall appearance and structure grade, minus any major defects = final grade" formula in overriding strict and technical Overstreet grading criteria to give a grade bump, as has been clearly demonstrated in this thread:
