  1. agree with all the above. major defects are the 1/2" cover tear, the 2-3" color breaking crease, and spine wear and spine roll. Outstanding colors and glossy cover. 5.0 as is. 5.5 with a press to fix the spine roll, waviness, and non-color breaking creases
  2. lots of color breaking edge wear and small color breaking creases. front cover is a 4.0. large area of moisture damage to back cover knocks it down a notch. CGC is historically relatively harsh on moisture damage and staining. CGC grade 3.5
  3. The marvel chipping is the major defect here. otherwise structurally sound book with nice colors and moderate color breaking spine creases, moderate edge wear on top and bottom of cover, minor soiling back cover. CGC 4.0 unless they are feeling particularly picky about paper loss as that's probably more than a 1/8" square or 1/4" corner triangle piece note: Historically CGC has been more lenient on missing pieces compared to strict Overstreet, so it's possible this could grade higher, but I wouldn't count on it.
  4. Meets all the criteria for a solid FR/GD book: extensive cover tears and wear, tape and extra staple, spine splits. However, I believe the spine split will be the deciding factor in a CGC grade in this case. if the cumulative length of the spine split is longer than 2/3 the length of the spine (doesn't look like, but really can't tell from the pictures) then you're at a FR 1.0. Less than 2" of spine split and you could be looking at a GD- 1.8. Anything in between (looks like the case) nets you a FR/GD 1.5. In any case, it's got great eye appeal for any of the possible grades above!
  5. some great reads and cool uncommon items: Elric Dreaming City very nice copy except for bottom corner ding signed on interior by P Craig Russell $6 DC & Marvel First Day issue stamps set of two - both for $10 Daredevil End of Days lot 1-7 plus doubles of 2, 6 $5 Swamp Thing 38 2nd Constantine $2
  6. Wow, what an amazing thread. Darn work is really interfering with my comic buying...
  7. Tons of cover wear, bends, small tears, creases, moderate color breaks. Definitely in the GD range as is. However there is no major defect that is characteristic of the GD grade, just a large accumulation of lesser defects. This is a structurally very solid book. The colors are bright with nice gloss, there are no significant pieces missing, no large spine split, cover is attached, there is mild to moderate soiling but nothing major, complete, with nice page quality. 2.5 with a decent chance at a 3.0 with a skilled clean and press (possibly even a 3.5 after seeing the magic a good press and realignment did to an FF #5). There are a ton of non-color breaking small bends, creases and bumps that could be pressed out to make this a very nice presenting book with a decent grade bump.
  8. I purchased a stack of assorted Classics Illustrated and other nice GA books from Gene's recent thread. The books were accurately graded, very securely packed, and shipped quickly. Also shared some great conversation with him as well. Great guy and great seller. Looking forward to the next sales thread. Thank you!
  9. I purchased a slabbed book from Greg. It arrived well packed and in perfect condition. Thank you
  10. Copy A: 4.0, I think 4.5 is too generous due to accumulation of defects though not an impossible CGC grade Copy B: 3.5, presents as a 4.0 but the tear through entire book knocks it down.
  11. Johnny545, any thoughts on the difference between the Canadian vs Standard US? editions? We were having this discussion on another thread, as it appears all Superior comics were printed in Canada and then distributed. CGC has noted some of these comics as the Canadian edition. What are the distinguishing characteristics of the Canadian editions? I have a Strange Mysteries 3 that was sold as Canadian ed. but I can't tell the difference. Thanks, and sorry for the minor (but thread relevant) hijacking.
  12. In this recent Superior comics PCH sales thread CGC does recognize Canadian edition vs standard US? edition. Would be curious what the identifying feature of the Canadian editions are. I saw you just purchased a book, but it wasn't a Canadian edition. You could always purchase one of the Canadian editions, crack the case and let us know
  13. lots of color breaking spine wear, significant bottom cover edge wear and moderate cover wear, and a small stain on the back cover spine edge. I'm at a 6.0/6.5
  14. nice book there. major defects are the partial color breaking spine tics, the wear on bottom edge, color breaking crease bottom cover and right bottom corner, and interior writing. 7.0 easily, decent shot at 7.5
  15. Another Overstreet grade vs possible CGC grade conundrum. By overstreet criteria a cover detached at one staple puts you into the GD 3.0/3.5 range at best. However, we've seen clear examples of CGC grades of up to 6.5 with covers detached at one staple (popped staple). Overall nice looking front and back covers for lower grade. So... Overstreet grade 3.5 CGC grade 4.0/4.5
  16. Bought a nice silver age key book from Nik. Fast and secure shipping, good price, nice book as described and pictured. Friendly and a pleasure to do business with. Would definitely buy from Nik again. Thank you!
  17. spot on with the 3.0. I'm certainly not an expert on resto, but the page edges on the right upper corner look a little too evenly cut. Pages / wraps closer to the middle of the book are generally longer due to the assembly process. Hard to tell due to the viewing angle, so i could be completely off. Anyone with more experience on resto want to comment?
  18. Still waiting to see the back cover bottom right corner. Is it a mark, crease, stain, or something else? Otherwise that is a very nice book!
  19. I'm with you on this. 7.0 allows moderate color breaking, though this is a LOT of color break on an otherwise pretty clean book
  20. spine corners look ever so slightly soft and blunted. middle of spine may have a tiny color chip. 9.4 (but then again, i'm hesitant to call anything a 9.6 or 9.8)
  21. nice looking book. It presents like a VF- except for the right upper corner chip, which I initially thought would be a big hit to the grade. I found comparable slabs at 7.0 with similar chips CGC grade 7.0 Update: on further exam the chips in the slabbed 7.0s were uniformly smaller then this one, so CGC grade 6.5
  22. Amazing book! Presents incredibly well with the black cover. I have a couple Fiction House slabbed 8.0's that present worse than your book. However, you will get hammered hard for the stain, and maybe a little for the interior tear. CGC grade 6.5
  23. There are many professional services for pressing/cleaning comics. This is not considered restoration or conservation and is fairly common these days, especially for valuable and key books. You basically contact the company and they will give you a quote and then you send your books. Some of these will even submit the pressed/cleaned book to CGC for you to save an extra step. CGC has it's own partner service CSS that is essentially an in-house pressing/cleaning service, and even professional restoration and conservation services if you so desire. There are also several professional pressing/cleaning experts on these boards that offer the same service and have a large following among boardies. You can do a search to find these individual and companies, or go explore the restoration and grading subforums on these boards. I would say that your copy would definitely benefit from a press and clean, and the cost for such a book is minimal while the upside is potentially very large. good luck!
  24. For reference here are links to graded slabs below. Your book has a better front cover than the listed 8.5 and maybe as nice as the 9.2, but your back cover is worse than both. With a press and clean, you're probably looking at a 9.0 IMO. 8.5: https://www.ebay.com/itm/HOUSE-OF-SECRETS-92-CGC-8-5-New-Slab-Swamp-Thing-first-appearance-Rare/153212544664?hash=item23ac2de698:g:0OsAAOSw1u9bxh7T:rk:20:pf:0 9.2: https://www.ebay.com/itm/House-of-Secrets-92-CGC-9-2-OW-W-Bronze-Age-Key-Comic-1st-Swamp-Thing-IGKC-L-K/292760107139?hash=item4429dcb883:g:q7IAAOSwJjNbuRMI:rk:1:pf:1&frcectupt=true 9.4: https://www.ebay.com/itm/House-of-Secrets-92-CBCS-9-4-Like-CGC-1st-Swamp-Thing-VHTF/153207410784?hash=item23abdf9060:g:3r8AAOSw8U9bt66T:rk:16:pf:0
