Indeed.  And I suspect those 14k postings which have had a million views are incredibly repetitious. The interesting thing to me about AF 15  (apart from the fact that the Spidey origin story is only 11 pages long which makes the cost per page even more eye-watering) is that Stan always (always!) tells the story that AF was due to be cancelled and 15 was always scheduled to be the last issue and no one cared what was going to be in it, that he put Spidey in there as a one shot to get him out of his system and it was only after the sales figures came in that they ever envisioned it being a series.

But in AF 15 itself, there's a fan page where they publish their future intentions for the title, including that (1) Spider Man will now be appearing every issue, and (2) possibly, depending on future fan response, in two stories per issue (3) the contents page will be discontinued in response to fan feedback (4)  the word 'Adult' will be dropped from the title of future issues in response to feedback from teenage readers (5) there is an apology for not printing letters in that issue, but an assurance that the letters page will be back next month (6) a blurb to say don't say miss next month's issue and (7) an invitation to send your letters to the editor for publication in future issues of Amazing Fantasy.

I feel like the cancellation was more of a surprise than Stan remembers it being.

Another indicator that Amazing Fantasy #16 was planned when #15 went to print is Spider-Man #1 being two short stories - presumably intended to be the lead story in AF#16 with some Ditko back up shorts.
Yet another clue, at the end of Spider-Man story we are told he will appear in the next issue of Amazing Fantasy.

Several years ago I read an article by someone (Will Murray?) who had researched the story job numbers on the splash page (bottom left ASM#1 splash below) and had claimed to identify the composition of Amazing Fantasy #16; Spider-Man lead story from ASM#1 and the Ditko back ups appearing in Tales to Astonish and Tales of Suspense.

Wow. Well done Gary. That must be one of the best Marvel collections in the UK.

Thanks. I’ve been down-sizing comics and memorabilia the last two years, aiming for quality rather than quantity.

I love the Strange Tales #1, I had a wtb thread for one here when I first joined and passed on a few what were too pricey but would be bargains now

I’m the same with Journey into Mystery - I’m missing 8 issues but as one of those is #1 not sure I’ll ever complete. Last #1 I went for was about 10 years ago and was £250 but someone beat me to it.

    Strange Tales #1 - 12.   Dude.

I’m short 9 issues so still seems feasible to complete but prices climbing rapidly on these early Timely issues.

By the way, I'm sure you've noticed, but several of those comics you mention are on my Most Wanted list.  Any chance you still have those particular copies of Iron Man 21 & 22 and X men 64?  I think we've spoken about that copy of Surfer 10 before

None of my originals sadly. Yes it’s puzzling how certain issues turn up, I recently read someone else’s blog on how they found SS#10 on holiday as well. (Think it was Crivens).
On a caravan site shop in Tenby I once picked up about 15 Marvels all of which were ND issues (they had no distributed issues) including Spider-Man 121 (which I still have).

In retrospect if only we had asked some of these places where they were getting their comics.

Plymouth, which was an outpost of the Empire.

As I now live there I like to think of it as the centre of the empire. As an aside a mate of mine says Marvels and DCs were abundant in Plymouth when he started collecting in the mid 60s.

On the subject of seaside specials, this collector (whose memory seems pretty precise), describes finding Cap 123 (from March 1970) still on sale....or recirculated....in 1973 in a gift shop in Cornwall.

The rest of this is interesting if you're into the memorabilia (I particularly like the Hulk poncho and utility belt which clearly show a detailed knowledge of the character) but if not, I recommend skipping to the end and having a little drool over his collection.

I recommend watching it all, it’s fantastically presented…… it’s me on my mate’s YouTube site .

At the same gift shop at the same time I also got Cap 122, Thor 172, 173, Avengers 73, sgt fury 73, iron man 21, 22, x-men 64 and Silver Surfer 10.

Unfortunately I don’t recall how they were priced and as we know SS #10 doesn’t exist as a UKPV or a stamp. They were all in as new condition.

Also of interest a friend of mine went there a few weeks later and I asked him to get me some comics and he got me SS#12 and DD#60 which weren’t there when I was. A few weeks after that another friend was holidaying in the area and again I asked him to get me some comics and he came back with SS#13 and FF#96 - so the shop was getting in new stock and from the Silver Surfer’s apparently in date order albeit 4 years old.

It was a gift shop shack in a little village called Pentewan - unfortunately the shop is long gone.

Such returns as they got they bundled back up in 'Marvel Lucky Bags' and resold to newsagents cheaply as non-returnable. I never actually even saw a Lucky Bag, so I can't avoid the feeling that there relatively few of them around

You never saw one? I’ve never heard of them. I remember lucky bags of sweets and perhaps a plastic toy but never any with a comic in. What were “Marvel lucky bags”?

. Is it true that Daredevil appears in the new She Hulk TV show wearing his original mostly-yellow suit?

I wait until all episodes are available and then binge watch whole series so haven’t watched she-hulk yet. The trailer did appear to show daredevil in his Netflix costume but with hints of yellow.

Am I imagining it or was there a story/stories in a Marvel comic featuring a shop where villains went to buy their colourful costumes??

Wasn’t the gladiator a costume maker, in DD #18 foggy nelson gets his DD costume made by him.

Did you see also see this one?  Like buses - they have a tremendous herd instinct.

I was only looking for one example and found what must be the tattiest comic on eBay. But like you said easy to miss these with dark blue stamp on purple background.
I was reading this period of daredevil comics as back issues when I first started collecting - the title did seem more common than a lot of others which suited me as I have always been a fan of gene colan.

Chap seems to have an endless supply of books, doesnt he. Been on the bay forever.

Yes. Seems to get everything- unstamped, stamped, UKPVs, silver, bronze, copper, modern, variants - everything. I used to buy off them but then few years back their grading got very loose although I think I may be detecting it getting a bit better again.

The ten that you have that I still don't are:

    Thor 167, Hulk 125, Avengers 84,  X men 63, DD 57,  Iron Man 16, 17 & 18, 23, 25.

    I did my “research” over a period of about two weeks looking on eBayUK and my own Collection although most of mine from this period are unstamped cents. The one below is mine, I’ll do some more lookouts;

That's astonishing! The guy has over 400 feedback, and I went through the first 10 pages of them, all genuinely positive, no complaints. He sent a low offer last week, which I have declined, but sent a reasonable one on Sunday, that I have accepted; today is Tuesday, no payment, no answer to my message. For me is more than enough to block him.

I’m in UK and sell to afhar_44 quite often. He is a reliable payer but usually takes a few days and usually will only send one email a day (late at night UK time). Try sending him an invoice.

It’s interesting that marvel pre-hero comics still count as part of the marvel universe. So what would be the very first post golden age marvel comic that officially starts the marvel universe? Many would agree fantastic four 1 is the start….or is it?

I always consider Marvel to start with FF#1, the other candidates I can think of are Amazing Adventures #1, June 1961, first Dr Droom (later Dr Druid) or Rawhide Kid #17, August 1960, first Lee/Kirby collaboration on on going strip.

    I thought about this.

Recently, I purchased a comic with a fold just like that. I proceeded to fold it back and it came away - the book was more brittle than I anticipated. Maybe they are afraid to do so for that reason. Or maybe it is to show the defect clearly to online buyers.

    That, or they're lazy.

Either way, it didn't stop someone shelling out twenty big ones.

I sound like I'm out of the Sweeney there. "He slapped down twenty gees, Guv" :)

Shut it. Crease would have to be sharper than a gangsters flick knife for the piece to fall off. Looks too white to me to be very brittle.

I see a bit of shadow behind the fold which indicates to me it’s not flat and can’t have been stored like that for long - I wonder if it has happened recently, perhaps whilst preparing it for auction?
