  1. Comics like these two are what made 1956 such a great year for comic mags. Some argue that the imposition of the CCA in 1955 resulted in a dramatic fall-off in the overall quality of comics. Well I don't see it.
  2. Oh yeah! Contrast those Atlas war comics with the Sgt. Fury and his Howling Commandos ones Marvel degenerated to publishing in the sixties.
  3. My favourite passenger train of all time is the Turbo which I took five times from Toronto to Montreal or back in 1981-82: It was the fastest, sleekest train to ever traverse the rails in North America. As a young fellow at the time I thought myself a big-shot (I've long since abandoned those pretensions) so I used to travel first-class and on at least one of those trips I sat in the upstairs cab in a big swivel chair right behind the engineer driving the Turbo! I sorely miss the Turbo. Here it is in its original CN livery: Penn Central and then Amtrak ran shorter consists of these Turbos on the New York - Boston run in the early seventies:
  4. Well this one is like the Energizer Bunny. It won't die anytime soon.
  5. Demand flagging, prices softening, Hey, let's give it a new label! It's their version of retail price maintenance. While my copy isn't nearly as nice, at least I can say it's been free of shenanigans for over 35 years.
  6. Here are a few photos of my Batman Book and Record Sets including some of the interior pages:
  7. And let's not forget her boyfriend Comet. These stories can be filed under forbidden romances I guess: I Love Ya But You're Strange - Brian Cronin Supergirl Made Out with Her Horse? - Comic Vine
  8. Oh man! I love those Atlas war covers from the fifties. They make DC and Marvel's sixties war titles look tame by comparison.
  9. Wow! Great thread! I'll see what I can find to contribute.
  10. Azkaban: Hey! Those Action Comics are really nice! Did you just buy them?
  11. The second Action Comics cover from 1966 reminded me so much of the first one from 1962 that I thought I'd already scanned the second cover because I'd scanned the first one some five years ago!
  12. Oh man, great cover! Marvel and Charlton published some real good ones too in the sixties and seventies. <3
  13. I agree! DC house ads were the best ones of them all, romance and otherwise, and the man who made them happen was Ira Schnapp!
  14. Me too, it is one of the coolest subgenres in comics as far as I'm concerned (but then I'm also terribly biased). Yet there are some who collect Captain America and X-Men but ignore these.
  15. No, just post them in the Batman thread as well.
  16. I'm very pleased to see all four of those since they're all really nice early to mid-fifties comics, but the two Detective ones belong in the Batman thread.
  17. You know I always preferred Lana, but she has really pudgy arms there on that cover so I may have to rethink my preference....
  18. So after more than five years and 144 pages of posts, it seems that your initial fears were unwarranted.
  19. Here are a couple of my Action Comics I don't believe I've posted yet:
  20. A combination of both reasons I think, with the latter being more important.
