  1. HOW DID I MISS THIS GROUP SHOT?? wow, beautiful collection, Buttock!! My dream collection. Very hard books. Nice AMF vol 2/#5 ... spectacular!!! And that Arrow cover with the polar bear is another favorite. How long did that shot take you to assemble? And what is the average condition (they all seem to be well above VG's)?
  2. Thanks for posting that book bat-hound!! My fav Detective cover by far. I followed its progress in that auction... congrats on a great book.
  3. Thanks Paul!! I appreciate you solving a seven year old mystery for me at last.
  4. Greetings Paul, Let me second Point Five's "welcome to the boards"! I am really looking forward to your book on the comics of Fletcher Hanks... I especially enjoy the obscure creators of the golden age, and since discovering Hanks' work accidently, I have been trying in vain to track down info on him. The first work I saw of his was a little reprint in a graphic design magazine, a scan of which I have attached below. Maybe you can help identify which issue this is from? Would love to track down the original comic. If there is any way to get put on a mailing list, please sign me up, or let me know. I can't wait to see this book!! Fantagraphics is well respected, and always does a stand up job on their books, so I know the book will be beautifully done. Thanks for putting together such an amazing project... if you have any other projects in the works, I (we) would love to hear about them.
  5. Hi Point Five, Thanks so much for this rare opportunity to read the first STARDUST story without having to take out a loan, or worry about ruining an expensive book!! Very cool work. Must know more about Henry Fletcher!! I love the mysterious, obscure aspect of his work. Wordy rascal, wasn't he? The first place I saw his work was a little reprint of a page and a half in an old graphic design mag, in an article about old comics. I saved this clipping, hoping one day to find out who was behind this cool artwork!! In it, criminals have apparently caused the earth to loose its garvity, and all the people fly off and float into space... then the criminal mastermind, not wanting to share all the wealth of the world, kills his comrades. (any one know which issue this story is from?) I believe STARDUST is also used on the cover of "MEN OF MYSTERY" (right title?), the history book of the golden age. Hope that more of his work does see reprint one day.
  6. Thanks 143ksk... I actually got to see the original art for that cover, along with the cover art for WONDER two over from that one (the floating metallic globe), at Bob Lesser's Pulp Cover Art Exhibit in Brooklyn, a few years back. Too bad I don't have a MARVEL #1 for my group shot...
  7. Great book, Jon, as usual!! The Lamont copy of my favorite FOX cover! In addition to METRO, you can find the book at SUPERWORLD COMICS and CLINK... the book was nowhere to be seen when i was hunting for it, and I ended up paying too much at HERITAGE! Patience is not my middle name... It is a really nice book, and affordable. Well worth it.
  8. Well, since I'm out of comics to photograph, I figured I'd start in on my Frank R. Paul cover collection. Here are probably the highlights of my collection... the poor, older, "second cousins" to golden age comics. The best part of these books is definately the covers. I love the subject matter that Paul chose to illustrate... complex machines, giant aliens, "space guns", giant insects... the list goes on...
  9. Tell me about it Point Five... I just picked up an early Mystery Men this morning from Jim Payette, who, by the way, has a nice selection of early FOX's!! The SCIENCE #4 is definately Joe Simon (it is signed by the telescope)... i agree, it does look he had a few different references around when he drew that one (esp. that "paste up" orange monster!) I, too, would love to pick up some more SCIENCE's at some point... nice #2, by the way, Jon!!! I don't even understand how its possible to have the collection he has... there ain't that many high grade books in the WORLD!!
  10. Very excellent choices, CW! Particularily the WEIRD #1. Love that cover. I figured I'd better get in here before this one is posted:
  11. BEAUTY BOOKS PUNY HUMAN!! I love that Mystery Men cover (#7)... I would at some point love to get ahold of the first ten issues of the title... but man, hard to find, and $$$$$. Amazing covers on all ten of those! I missed a nice #10 at Heritage, in favor of buying SCIENCE #3 and 4 ... don't regret it, but would have been nice to get them all!! Anyone have Mystery Men #2 (robot cover) to post? Its funny how the cover art quality really went downhill for FOX during 1941, and into 1942... look at the difference between MYSTERY MEN #8 and #20 for instance... one year apart, but what a huge difference!!
  12. Here is a cool page from the back of REX DEXTER, an ad for the BLUE BEETLE radio show! You can find downloads of it on the net... its kind of fun to hear... i have teh origin show on tape, although the origin itself is no more than Dr. Franz injecting Dan Garrett with his wonder serum, then the Blue Beetle is off to smash the dope peddlers!!
  13. REX DEXTER SPREAD (everything you could want in a sci-fi comic)
  14. THANKS POINT FIVE!! Been looking forward to this thread. I'll contribute this scan of REX DEXTER #1, an obscure one shot . Art by Breifer. I'm going to post photos of some interior panels as well, as there are truly some fun "drawrings". Part of what I have been collecting is early sci fi comics, circa 1939 to 1942 (the focus of most of my comic collecting), and this one shot falls smack dab in the middle! Its a really nice book. The art ranges in quality from exciting to downright awful. But to me, thats part of the fun. FOX and Centaur books do seem to have an odd link between them, maybe because, as Centaur Man implied, of that trial-and-error feel that those books had around that time period. And thanks for adding the footnote about Kooba Cola! As you will see, REX DEXTER has a cover blurb offering a free bottle of KOOBA, THE BIG DRINK. Can't wait to see what covers end up on this thread... so far, the first two will be hard to surpass.
  15. Seriously, I didn't mean to pre-empt his shot. I freaking LOVE that collection he's assembling. Lots of tough books in that picture, and right in the sweet spot of what I try to collect. Centaur Man, you can pre-empt my collection any time you want. Pre-empt away!!!! I hope you will be posting more Centaurs in the form of a group shot. I don't get tired of looking at those books.
  16. Thank you , Centaur Man!! High praise coming from someone with a collection like yours ( I can see we have similar collecting tastes, though different collecting budgets)... I am blown away by your photo, with the crazy multiples!! Really wonderful. Also, like others, I am in absolute agreement about your collecting attitude. Nice to see someone collecting for the love of the ENTIRE book, and someone who appreciates reading the stories. I am drooling over the A-MAN #5 as I write this... ah, one day...
  17. Can we see more of that? For sure , Scrooge. Have you checked out the Frank R. Paul thread? Most of my pulp collection consists of Paul covers (and a few back covers), and I'm picking my fav covers to put up on that thread (along with SUPERWORLD COMICS #2 and 3 when i get them!). There have been some other great contributions by other board members as well. (OR, did you mean a group shot of pulps?)
  18. We'll have plenty to chat about... Stay tuned. I am looking forward to seeing some samples from those books.... i read your comments in another thread about SPACE SMITH i think... same artist?? I gots to get me some of those FANTASTICS!! Looking forward to the photo "trade"! And to your FOX covers. Just to keep on track, here is the second half of my collection... pretty sad, i can fit all my comics in two photos!! Oh well, gotta start somewhere. I've got a few on the way. My pulp collection is way bigger (they are also generally WAY cheaper than G.A. comics!!).
  19. ps. Point Five : If you have a digital camera, I'd love to see some of the STARDUST art from the FANTASTIC's, if thats ok (posted on the FOX cover thread, when that gets rolling). The art I have seen of the STARDUST strip looks so cool , and so typically golden age sci-fi!! Any idea who the artist was on that strip? Thanks for any info you have! I PROMISE to get the Rex Dexter pix up. I'll have to pick up some of those FANTASTIC's one day...
  20. NICE SHOT pointfive!! That's what i was hoping to see. Beauty books... really like the SCIENCE #6, and the WONDERWORLD #12. But they are all great books. Always nice to see a grouping like that. Um, CENTAUR group shot anyone?
  21. Great books, Ryan! I would love to know more about that Rex Dexter one-shot, as I've always been curious about it (and funny enough, I came across a full-page ad for it in Fantastic Comics #10 earlier today which renewed my curiosity). How are the stories inside? Is the art pretty generic, or do you recognize any of the more distinctive artists from the other Fox titles? Thanks Point Five!! I'm going to hold you to starting up that FOX cover thread! Unfortunately for me, all my FOX books appear in that photo, but I've got my eye on a few out there. The ones I do own, I am very happy with. Re: the REX DEXTER one shot, if you start that FOX thread I'll take some pics of the interior (don't like scanning open books for obvious reasons) and post 'em. Its great... its got about four REX stories, all apparently by Briefer, but all ranging in style and quality, and all totally bizarre. It has a wonderful robot story, and a story about these jelly-fish-type disembodied heads which attempt to take over the earth (how REX defeats them is HI-larious). The remainder of the book is the PATTY O'DAY strip from Wonderworld (i think). All in all, its a great one shot, and affordable (my copy is pretty rough). I'll be watching for the FOX thread!!
  22. Great covers october!! Quality stuff!! its amazing how these books look even better when bunched together!! its like a page out of Gerber.
  23. Wow, there have been some mind blowing shots!! Here is my meager contribution to the thread... I have only started re-collecting in the last two years, after selling what few G.A. books I had to buy an original Frank R. Paul pulp illustration. Since I've started buying again, I've concentrated on my favorite covers (and artists), and try to be selective in my choices. Would love to see someone else's Centaur or early Fox group shot! Has that been done on this thread yet?
