  1. Very awesome comic grouping!! Does anyone else ever lay their comics out just to see how good they look in a grouping? Well, I guess thats how this thread started. I love that copy of Amazing Mystery, w/ the Everett cover ... looks to be very nice!! The "True Crime" and "Victory" books are beaut's too... Re: writing on covers, maybe I'm a minority, but it doesn't bug me ... it's something I kind of expect to see, and to me, it gives the comic some "ownership", and/or individuality. I like to imagine what it must have been like as a kid buying a comic like that. I have to stop eggnogging and posting ... :
  2. I just love these two covers!! Especially the mock-Flame cover. Great stuff.
  3. Greetings jmf, I'll add my welcome to the boards!! I'm coming in late on this, but wanted to say, as a huge Centaur fan, these are beautiful examples of rare foreign golden age!! Never knew these existed. I especially love the "L'oeil" cover... as well as that "red batman" cover. The fact that they are re-drawn and re-interpreted for a French audience only adds to the charm. Some of the titles and typestyles are graphically amazing. I am very interested in purchasing some of these if you ever come across any extras... I will private message you regarding this. Thanks for sharing these rarities, jmf!!
  4. No more so than any other company (at least that is my experience). STEVE Then you haven't seen my Centaurs!! I have to say whoever fixed those with the tape on the inside spine at least did nice job, so they are still enjoyable and solid.
  5. My #7 has a taped spine as well (on the inside)... maybe Centaur's were prone to cover splits? Like CentaurMan said, the #5 is usually in rough shape, or restored. The copy I secured is the former, but it still has pretty nice eye appeal (from what I can see from the scans). Maybe kids who bought AMAN really "loved" these books!! But I'm just happy to have decent readable copies. What an amazing Santa, PH!!! How does Santa know where to find these rare books??? Maybe I should write Santa a letter...
  6. Reminds me that I used to own the Chruch copy - just haven't been able to find a suitable replacement (A-Man 9 is a very tough book). I love the Funny Pages 36, too (I am proud to own the RareHighGrade copy!!). What's the last A-Man you need, Ryan? STEVE The last AMAN i need is the first issue, or #5 as its known ... I have actually secured it at Pedigree Comics, Doug is being very generous letting me pay it off over time. So, in theory I have it locked down, but don't own it! When it does come in, I'm taking the phone off the hook, and reading all the Everett AMAN stories straight through!
  7. Time to revive this thread again... Here are two I got this week ... the FUNNY PAGES 36 has a wicked spine roll, but has beautiful pages, and presents well overall! I'm really happy with it. Tough one to get. (thanks, CM, for stepping aside to let me obtain this one!! ) The AMAZING MAN #9 isn't quite as pretty, but also has really nice page quality. Unfortunately the inside spine is taped, but its still a pretty solid book. I am now only one issue away from completing my Everett AMAN run, a goal I have had since reading Jon Berk's article on AMAN in the Comicbook Marketplace mag about 8 years ago! (#47, april 1997 to be exact ... still have the issue!) GREAT art in both of them!!! I have some other Centaurs on the way, both of them tough books (what Centaur isn't?), so I'll be back in the next month or so madly posting!!
  8. Hey CM, you should send me a list of issues you need ... i'm sure you have better access to Centaurs than myself, but since I am always on the prowl, I may stumble upon a book you need. Never know! I would love to help with this noble cause. Here's a very cool back page ad from FUNNY PAGES 3/9, a house ad signed by Bill Everett! There is something oddly appealing about this ad, maybe its the crazy lettering at the top, or just the use of black! Can't wait to able to read the complete Everett A-MAN run ! I am a month or two away from buying the last issue I need (#5 (#1)).
  9. I'll add my congratulations CM!! On both purchases. Great books. I am especially partial to the KDF 20, and now that you have your copy, I can work on getting my "reader" copy. I just love that cover...
  10. That is a real beaut of a book to own Rick (blue label to boot!) ... congratulations many times over! Would love to own one myself someday ...
  11. I'm not quite sure what is being represented on that cover, but the Blue Beetle sure seems to be enjoying himself! STEVE Blue Beetle conga line, while swatting a dinosaur. A classic. Good times
  12. Thanks AS! That clears up the question I forgot to ask.. that is, what up with all the numbering and check marks inside? That is so cool they came form an art instructor's collection... myself being a commercial artist. I'll check out Matt's site! Thanks again. (Point Five made a funny!)
  13. This thread is too good to leave untouched for very long! This just arrived... it was a banner week for GA!! From Comic Heaven ... a long wait, but worth it. The Cosmic Aeroplane copy (whats the story behind this pedigree?) Love the cover!! does anyone know if this is Tarpe Mills only golden age cover? I don't think she actually did any of the Miss Fury covers for Timely...
  14. That is a great purchase SS, and I don't even collect DC's!
  15. You have just created a new genre: "Ape Bondage"!! What a great looking book Steve!! Makes me look at Fiction House in a whole new light!
  16. Thanks Steve... Cover to cover, it is one of the nicest books I own ... And there just happens to be a (restored) copy of SS #7 on Heritage right now, and its killing me!!! Would love to bid, but I'm basically done for the year (and a good part of 2007 also) (** excluding AMF vol.2/#5 of course!). Oh well, I'm sure it will come up again. (missed out on the dentist's copy, which sold under guide!)
  17. Thanks guys! Its a really nice book, inside and out. And yes, the "Harold" signature does kind of add a "cool" factor to the book I think. Many would see it as a negative aspect, but I love covers that kids have scribbled their names on. It gives the books some personality and history.
  18. Wow, now I want to start collecting G-8! I have always thought the cover art on those pulps was very strong. Well, the FedEx man was kind to me today... after a few months of time payments, I got my SILVER STREAK #6. A lower grade copy, but solid, with nice paper. And the art inside is fantastic... really top notch stories (two by Cole I believe), esp. the PLANET PATROL strip, which features giant star-fish/octopus men!! And the cover speaks for itself... I would have just bought the cover.
  19. Thanks, Ryan! Funny thing is, this actually happens in the story. The bad guy yells at The Flame "Stay back...unless you want half the city BLOWN UP!" The Flame advances anyway...the bad guy presses a button...and sure enough, half the city is blown up. I guess even superheroes have off-days. God Bless the golden age writers. I love that sort of stuff.
  20. Just checked it out... nice one. (could only get the general idea of it, as its a Gerber postage stamp-sized photo!) (sorry to get off topic, but a "women in tubes" thread would be nice to see...)
  21. GREAT looking copy PointFive!! Definitely on my want list... that Fine cover is... well, FINE!! The machinery and the bondage girl, with the exploding city in the background... awesome.
  22. That is truly a honey of a cover, Jon. Very pulp-y! Love the giant nazi skeleton with syringe , and women in bondage... it really does have everything! Thanks for posting!
  23. One of the top 10 coolest individual comics I have seen posted. What a gem. I am a big fan of the "woman in glass tube" motif (for ex: CAPTAIN AMERICA #3) ... this SCIENCE issue is a prime example!!! And look at the colors! Well done, Jon B! We would expect no less than the best!! Then I'm sure you are aware of Strange Worlds #4 West Well, with a little help from Gerber, and yourself, I have been reminded how cool STRANGE WORLDS 4 is... I advise everyone to check it out. Amazing. Anyone else out there know of any other FOX girl-in-glass-tube covers? I just realized I had one myself:
