  1. Steve, I've checked out all the books you've posted in the past few days, and not only is the condition of these books newsstand fresh, but the actual cover art seems to be the most classic covers of the GA (in my opinion). As someone who goes after GA books for their covers and cover artists (Everett, Simon, Kirby, Fine, etc), I would say you have a collection that is pretty much in line with my own collecting tastes. These are some truly incredible books. How long have you been collecting?
  2. GASP.... (choke)... Absolutely incredible copy Steve!!! Out of my three Centaur grails, that is the only one I don't have yet. What a beaut. The other Everett space-ship cover isn't too shabby either. Wow. Thanks for posting!! Ryan
  3. Hi Steve, Just got through going over your FOX books on the FOX thread, and then I hit this... you have some incredible books. I have a weak spot for Centaur's, and these rare books of yours are really amazing. Would love to see any AMAZING MYSTERY FUNNIES you have lying around... Ryan
  4. There ought to be a drooling icon ... those are drop-dead books Steve. Absolutely stunning, and so good to see them raw. What else can i say??
  5. Thanks for posting the interior art!! Great to see... I happen to love stories/art dealing with arctic-type climates (for some reason).... really cool stuff we would otherwise probably never see.
  6. While the "funny" covers do have appeal, I just don't have the unlimited funds to go after them, so I tend to put my money on the money covers. I'm sure alot of collectors of Centaurs feel that way, unfortunately for us. When Centaur covers were good, they were WAY good...
  7. Well done CentaurMan!! Thank you for posting those... they are on my short list of "must haves". Love those Asian Menace covers (like the Wu Fang pulps). I bid on a Mystery Men #10 form Comic Heaven (with a great Asian menace Blue Beetle cover), but lost (anyone get it?) . I DID, however end up winning the FUNNY PAGES Tarpe Mills jungle cover-issue , which i am actually more happy with anyways. Will post it here when it arrives (CentaurMan has already put his up on this thread, and its a sweet one). I have been watching for the Centaurs all over the place, but man, they really are scarce. At least the ones i want (Everett covers, Gustavson covers).
  8. Congratulations Jon!! That run doesn't even seem physically possible, but you've done it!! Well done. Do you have any other Church runs, or is this the first complete (more or less) Church run for you?
  9. Run! Run away now before you, too, are sucked into the vortex of Fiction House! (I don't need the competition... ) Is your next purchase going to be Planet Comics #2? Not to worry, I will have to make myself focus on my "grails", so as not to get sidetracked (as is very easy to do in this hobby!). The PLANET #1 was more of a splurge... Centaur's, Fox's and Timely's will eat up most of my funds!! There was a pretty nice low grade #2 and #10 on Ebay a while back... anybody on the boards get those? I bid, but they climbed pretty high in the last hour of bidding.
  10. Thanks guys... I figured this year I'd try to aquire some nice lower grade key books, and then revert back to lower end books ($100 to $400 price point), after I have a nice core built up. But once you get the bug, its really hard to stop (I'm sure no one can relate to this! ) The Fiction House books are really starting to appeal to me...
  11. Nice book October!! I take it you have other Nick Cage Planets? Not quite in the same grade category, but its my first Fiction House book!! Thought I'd start with PLANET #1 (G/VG raw). I am slowly building a nice collection of 1939-1940 sci-fi comics. Coincidently, today I received in the mail my first PLANET pulps as well... some really nice covers in the batch.
  12. Yep, I have a copy of that book and love it. Nice little sub-collection idea you had there to accumulate the books from it. Cool. It wasn't really intentional... I have owned that book since my mom gave it to me for Christmas when I was about ten years old (cool mom). Lately, I've had it off the bookshelf all the time, and its kind of worked its way into my subconsciousness. I have a PLANET #1 on the way, and as I mentioned, a SILVER STREAK #6 on time payments... both from that book. Highly recommended reference book if you don't have it ("The Golden Age of Comic Books" by Richard O'Brien)! And congrats, Ciorac, for freeing that poor Church book from its confines!! Thanks Ryan! Mile Highs did fine on their own in a basement for three decades, mine should do nicely out of his prison. My Mom was like yours. She supported my love of the hobby and used to take me to the comic store in Phoenix back in the early 70's. I bought so much stuff my brother and I started doing mail order, which fueled us with more money to buy more books...the rest is history. I owe my mom a lot... she used to take myself and my brother to Doug Sulipa's Comic World, which at the time was a dingy shop filled with dust and cigarette smoke... and glass cases with GA comics and pre-hero Marvels!! Later on, at a different store, she bought me my first three Timely's (MMC #39, #49 and Subby #18), which were priced at 50% off!! Anyways, she was always very supportive of my hobby and art interests. Sorry if this went off topic... some one should start a thread about memories of early comic store experiences, back when comics stores used to stock GA books , instead of Manga and gaming cards (no offence meant to Manga/gaming fans).
  13. Yep, I have a copy of that book and love it. Nice little sub-collection idea you had there to accumulate the books from it. Cool. It wasn't really intentional... I have a PLANET #1 on the way, and as I mentioned, a SILVER STREAK #6 on time payments... both from that book. Highly recommended reference book if you don't have it ("The Golden Age of Comic Books" by Richard O'Brien)! (Needless to say I've blown my comics budget for the year!) And congrats, Ciorac, for freeing that poor Church book from its confines!!
  14. I'm going to read it tomorrow morning... with my eggs and bacon! Seriously, its got a great line up: a classic Spacehawk with two very phallic looking aliens, a nice looking Burgos White Streak, and Everett Chameleon story, and nice Tarpe Mills story, and a couple of other nice fillers (plus Spacehawk text story). I'm trying to lay my hands on the TARGET #5, with the beauty Everett White Streak cover, and first Spacehawk by Wolverton. Yeah, I'm not so sure how rare #7 really is, but I didn't want to miss the opportunity to finally get ahold of one. Probably overpaid a bit, but I'm ok with that. Now I can cross that one off the list.
  15. Just came today... some resto work (most evident on the staples), but I don't care. Its a TARGET #7... the Wolverton cover is killer. Great paper quality, and amazing colors. It was one of those "must have's" for me. I am slowly accumulating comics from "The Golden Age of Comics", by Richard O'Brien (1977). Does anyone else own this book? Its a great reference, with full size photos (ranging in quality). I am in the process of beginning time payments on Silver Streak #6 (G/VG), one of the many amazing covers found in this book. Will be sure to post that one when it comes in (many months from now).
  16. PUNYHUMAN, That is a very enviable collection... so great to see!! You clearly have superior taste in artists... that grouping is a perfect sampling of some of Fine's best work. That JUMBO space cover is very underrated!! You don't see that everyday. Well Done!!! oh what the heck...
  17. Nice one CentaurMan (and October, Boy-Wonder)!! Looking forward to the new thread... I have only recently become interested in some of the early SILVER STREAK's, mainly beacuse of Jack Cole's work, the CLAW character, and some Simon art. But I'm sure they have more going for them than that. Looking forward to my #2.
  18. Those are new ones on me too, CentaurMan... NICE books!! Love the odd format, and there is something about the title, "LITTLE GIANT MOVIE FUNNIES", and the design of the logo, that is pure golden age. Very nice !
  19. Ciorac: WOW... I got here a bit late, but just wanted to say on the MARVEL MYSTERY #4, and ESPECIALLY the #9!! Beauty book!! Very nice!! The #4 is slightly nicer than the EBAY #4 you bid on , no??
  20. Hi CentaurMan or Jon B., I was wondering if you could clear up a Centaur question for me, about Keen Detective Funnies and "The Eye Sees!" strip... I was wondering in which issue the EYE first appears? Overstreet has it as vol.2/#2, but I read another source which had it pegged as vol.2/#12. I find sources very inconsistant about which artists and characters appear in which issues of Centaurs. Maybe you can help. Also, is there an origin story in existance? Again Overstreet states vol.2/#12 as the origin issue, but I have that issue, and there is no origin story. Just a regular EYE adventure. Thanks for any light you can shed on this obscure character! Great books by the way, both of you. I am really enjoying seeing what books pop up on this thread! Glad it has been resurrected.
  21. Beautiful Centaur's, Fuelman!! It makes me wish I could have made it to the con... I've never been to one before, and the ability to see that many GA books under one roof makes it really tempting (not to mention the social aspect of it!). The AMF #1 looks really nice!! Never had much appreciation for the ARROW series covers, but seeing nice scans of them makes me think differently. Thanks for posting, and happy reading! Seems to be alot of nice material available right now, with the con's and the auctions happening this summer! Anyone else strike Centaur gold lately?? I've got my eye on a few auctions...
  22. Actually,if you think about it,the Church copies weren't any older then, than Bronze age is now. That photo of Chuck with the adding machine is priceless.I'd like to have a T-shirt with that on it.GOD BLESS... -jimbo(a friend of jesus) oh... I guess that means I'm old...
  23. As I said before, that is a GREAT book... the figures are so large and prominent, which you don't see alot of in Schomburg covers. Congrats on a wonderful copy of that key issue! I have to ask, who is "LCS"? thanks
  24. Even though those Church photos are blurry, the comics look so white and the covers so clean that they don't at all look like they are that old (and they were old when the photo was taken!). Unbelievable. Ciorac, its one thing to see your books , but another to see your books in the RAW!! That photo of your unbagged books stacked up is killer, esp. with the Mystery Men #1, Weird #3, and other great FOX books sitting right on the top! Thanks for those photos!!
  25. Again, really nice books CentaurMan. Oddly enough, this thread has inspired me to pick up a lower end copy of AMAZING ADVENTURE FUNNIES #1... seeing your scans of this book only made me want it more!!! My copy is no where near yours, but it looks like a nice reader, and not being high on my list, the price was right. The main reason i got it was the Burgos, Gustavson and Everett art (even though its all reprints). If you have a moment, I was wondering if you tell me how many Burgos and Everett stories are in #1? I love the AIRSUB DX strip by Burgos. Whats next?? Whats left? Haven't seen many of your AMAZING MYSTERY FUNNIES issues...
