  1. Oops!! Never mind my last question... we must have posted at the same time. That #22 is what one would call "a tough book"... and for good reason.
  2. Been out of town, so I'm getting my Centaur fix now!! Great to see more of your collection CentaurMan! The quality of your books is really nice and consistant. Curious if you have tracked down the evasive #22 (Nazi super-gorilla cover)? As always, looking forward to seeing more....
  3. I don't really have alot of first hand knowledge... according to an online index, Hanks did do a back up feature for DARING MYSTERY COMICS #4 and #5. Other than that, I am totally useless... I've been getting most of my Hanks knowledge from you, Jon! Don't forget about TABU, the Jungle Wizard (Hanks liked wizards!), in Jungle Comics. Not sure which issues Hanks did, but they were the early ones, for sure. Sorry I couldn't be of help...
  4. THAT is a sweet book, CentaurMan!! Out of all the Centaur titles, the FUNNY PAGES seem to be the hardest to come by... aside from a few Church copies I've seen for sale (that are totally out of range), and a few VF+ (also, out of range), they rarely seem to come up for sale. Maybe thats because they also represent some of THE best Centaur covers!!
  5. Wow, no posts in two days ... I guess Centaurs truly are scarce!! Anyways, to keep things going, here is one I don't have anymore... but I have the scan, and thats good enough for this thread. Anyone have some of those nice Gustavson FUNNY PAGES covers? The polar bear cover (#35), or the three MAD MING covers are particularily nice. A nice feature of the ARROW covers was you never saw his face... mysterious!!
  6. CentaurMan, those A-MAN comics are fantastic!! I have the #10, but haven't picked up that great lion cover yet. A-MAN is really a nice run of books, with some real talent on the covers and insides. I LOVE the Dr. Hypno stories by Frank Thomas, who was also responsible for THE EYE!! Below is some great Thomas art, for those of you who haven't had the pleasure.
  7. That is correct, PointFive... I have to say, I was pleasantly surprised at the grading!! Most dealers would have put this at a VG or VG- ... props to Jim Payette!! I only just discovered him a month or two ago (courtesy of a board thread), and the two books I have received from him have been jems (for their grades). So, where is the scan of your FANTASTIC #4, Point Five? I would love to see that cover. Hows the Hanks story in that issue? I think the SPACE SMITH story in my #7 must be by someone else ... doesn't look like Hanks' work at all. Its nice to actually see a Fletcher Hanks story the way it was originally presented... this is my first Hanks issue. Wonder if any of his originals exist?? Maybe Jon Berk has some stashed away...
  8. That is without a doubt one of the best comic monsters ever!! Thanks for posting that Jon. Here is one that just arrived this morning... its got a nice STARDUST story in it. Plus a swell Joe Simon cover.
  9. Thanks Jon... DOES IT GET BETTER THAN THIS?
  10. Finally tracked this one down in an affordable grade... this was one of the first (possibly THE first) golden age comics I ever saw in real life, courtesy of Doug Sulipa's Comic World, circa. 1982.
  11. Why indeed!. Early publisher out of business before other publishers got their footing. Great artists....great stories.....They are so tough to find, it has kept their collectibility down.....Out of sight out of mind....Remember CENTAURS began in March 1938, taking over titles from Chelser, Ultem and Mahon (with ties directly to the earliest DCs)......Important, You Bet! I hope it didn't sound like I don't understand the Centaur "hype" , because I absolutely get it. To the point that the bulk of publishers in my meager collection is Cenatur!! The fact that they are like Timely prototypes is highly appealing to me. Lots of great material in these comics. The fact they are scarce helps collectors like me, with limited financial resources... plus, its kind of nice to belong to a small private "club" of collectors. Here is my copy of AMAN #7... I believe Jon posted his beaut early in the thread, but I thought we could stand to see it again. Jon, have you posted AMAN #22 yet? If not, how about it? That is one that doesn't turn up everyday.
  12. Thanks for posting those amazing books, Jon!! I particularily like the "Little Giant Detective Funnies" (big title for a small book!) ... I don't recall seeing that one in Gerber.
  13. Thats a really appealing KDF #24 by the way, CentaurMan. Would love to pick up those last few "airman" issues myself. NO WONDER you are called "CentaurMan"!!
  14. Hey Centaur Man, do have any of those DETECTIVE EYE comics from Centaur? if so, how many EYE SEES stories are in those, if any?
  15. I had some photos of panels from THE EYE SEES!, but i guess i deleted them. Anyways, yes, you got it... a giant, disembodied crime-fighting eye! How could you not love a character like that!! the art is actually really quite good (are you familiar w/ Frank Thomas? ), and the concept is so wacky, its genius.
  16. That is a SWEET issue!! Being a fan of the EYE SEES, I have been after that book as well, only because of its EYE cover, but to no avail. A nice, odd torture cover... how is the EYE story in that issue? I can't even imagine what other books you'll pull out of your hat Centaur Man...
  17. Thanks guys... that A-man #6 cover really is surreal... it is so simple, but so beautifully thought out... Everett was really an outstanding artist. Wish I could afford more of his early Sub-mariner work. However, his A-man stuff is fantastic as Centaur Man pointed out. There is a sequence in #6 where an invisible A-man grabs a pair of scissors off a bloated criminal's desk, and proceeds to plunge them into the criminal's chest!! These panels are from A-man #7 ... lot of nice interior art from that issue as well.
  18. It's true, I've seen that one for sale at various times/places... I guess it was more the actual dollar figure that I accepted for them that bothers me!! Lost money on the three Centaurs!! I got too focused on the Superworld and lost site of the dollars involved. Must... move... on... Great to see your Centaurs up close and personal CentaurMan!! The scans are really nice. You can tell the colors are beautiful on those covers. I can't totally put my finger on it, but Centaurs have the oddest appeal for me (and I'm sure many of you can relate)... out of all the publishers out there of GA books, and many of them top end (Fawcett, Gleason, etc) , WHY the obsession w/ Centaurs?? The use of Funnies Inc. staff definately helps ... Love the books with Everett, Burgos, Gustavson, and the other obscure masters of the day like Wolverton (!!), Tarpe Mills, and Frank Thomas (who's cartoony , heavy style I love!!) To me , the ideal Centaur for INTERIOR art that I own is Amazing Man #6, which actually has all of the artists listed above, minus Wolverton. What the heck, Jon posted his, but you can't have too much of a good thing! This book has been an obsession to me since around 1982 (saw the cover in an Overstreet)
  19. Another classic... nice one. Here is KDF vol.2/#12, to add to the series... no Everett art or origin of THE EYE SEES, as stated in Overstreet, but still a great book, with fun stories.
  20. Those are indeed nice books CentaurMan... Centaur Church's! The rarest of the rare! Not in the same league, but still nice, is this book (which I no longer have... for some reason I felt compelled to use this and two other Centaurs in a cash/trade deal for Superworld #1... what was I thinking??? Oh well... live and learn. Don't you hate it when you make a deal like that, and then regret it a week later?)
  21. Jaw-dropping books, CentaurMan!! I can't see enough Centaurs. Also, nice #2 Puny Human!! Nice contributions from everyone. I posted this on the "Show Me your Golden Age" thread, I believe, but I want to get in on the fun on this thread, and I'm sure this book hasn't shown up on here yet. This KEEN DETECTIVE FUNNIES #20 will probably be one of the only Mile High books I ever own... its my favorite golden age cover of all time, and I couldn't pass it up when it went up for sale. The EYE rules!
  22. GREAT BOOK CentaurMan!! I have always loved the simplicity of that cover... its unfortunate there is no Everett art in that book. How is the rest of the art? Its an amazing #1 issue, regardless.
  23. Thanks, Point Five!!! What a piece of work that story was... amazing plot (or lack thereof). The more I see of Fletcher Hanks work, the more I am obsessed with it!! It really does resemble the early Wolverton work I love so much, but is like a B movie version of Spacehawk! What it lacks in artistic merit it more than makes for in the charm factor! I am anxiously awaiting my FANTASTIC #7, which, according to Paul in an earlier post, contains one of the best STARDUST stories... I will be sure to post some photos of that story when i get it. Great contributions, folks!! Any other great covers lurking around out there? How about some of those great Joe Simon covers?
  24. WP, that is an amazing TARGET. I love that cover (definately an Everett), and the colors on your copy are excellent. The line up inside looks pretty "swell"... Burgos on White Streak, Wolverton on Spacehawk... is there an Everett story inside as well? Congrats!!
  25. Well, its not much after some of the books posted here, but I was happy to track it down...a Mystery Men #9, w/ Rex Dexter cover (just arrived today from Jim Payette). Severe spine roll (which I am tempted to get pressed out), but a nice solid copy. Great art inside!
