This is another example of a book that has less eye appeal after being manipulated than it did before.  From the lengthy line of color loss at the top of the spine and another one at the top staple, to the half-completed erasure of the arrival date, it's hard to understand how this book could've received the assigned grade, unless flaws introduced during its manipulation weren't given full consideration.

For comparison, here's another copy of the issue in the same grade, side by side:

Yep. I see the difference. Thanks for posting.

  2. I'm sending my key SA CGC graded comics off to auction. Page conditions vary- "white", "off-white to white" and "off-white". Should I send the "WHITE pages" comics to an auction that specializes in or tends to feature more "WHITE pages" comics?

I know most of you are collectors here, so maybe I should ask those of you who prefer or only collect WHITE pages- Do you have a "go-to" auction(s) ?

Please PM me if you have any 1970's Shazam panel pages, splashes or covers. I am paying top dollar for the art from Beck, Schaffenberger, Oksner, Cockrum, Giordano, Weiss and others. Thank you.

I saw your post the other day. I've been watching a nice '70s Shazam splash on ComicLink. I was going to bid on it, but it exceeded my price range today.  It's World's Finest #275 Page 39 Title splash.

    Good luck building your collection!

  4. Hello. I just received my first ever batch of slabbed comics from CGC. They look beautiful and I see zero Newton rings.

I have a couple questions. I'm sure these questions have been asked before in this topic, but I notice there are hundreds of posts here and I don't have time to go through all the posts.

Thanks in advance for any answers.

1- My slabs have no rings now. Can they appear later on? And if so......

2- Is there a way to store the slabs in order to prevent or prolong the appearance of Newton rings?

You'll probably have to cull some redundancy, but this is a pretty good start:

    https://www.comics.org/searchNew/?q=gene colan superman&sort=year

Thanks. I checked out your suggestion, but there's too much info to go through.

But I looked at Gene Colan on wikipedia and was surprised to find a comprehensive bibliography. I'm guessing a friend or family member is maintaining the site, hence all the info. Apparently, he did a ton of stuff for DC, but I only recognize 3 issues where he would have drawn Superman- World's Finest 297 and 299  and DC Challenge #1.  I'm not familiar with the 4 issue Phantom Zone series from 1982.

Yes, same Dave Cooper. Gun Fury from very early in his career, and it shows. Crumple from much later around the the time he jumped off into fine/gallery art for a decade or so. He's back to doing comics, of a sort through Fantagraphics (again).

    Thanks!

John Buscema & ‘The Tribe’: Savage Sword of Conan #5 pg 61:

The credits on this story are "ART: JOHN BUSCEMA and THE TRIBE". On the letters pages 'the tribe' is described this way:

" Oh, and incidentally, the members of Tony deZuniga's talented "Tribe" which inked and embellished this issue's classic tale are: Steve Gan, who handled the Falcon and the "bad guys" - Rudy Mesina and Freddie Fernandez, who inked the minor characters and most of the backgrounds - Pete Lijauco, who did the gray-tones with Mr. deZ's help and supervision - and of course Tony himself, who handled Conan and many of the other major characters - including the ladies, naturally. (The boss gets all the breaks!) "

Beautiful! And I appreciate the info.

  8. Does anyone have OA that is credited to "The Tribe"?

    Please share it!

My curiosity is piqued, so I started another topic requesting more info about The Tribe.  Please share your knowledge!

  10. I'm looking at a nice Shazam title splash page from 1982 signed by Don Newton. Very cool! Dan Adkins inks. I notice in the item description that Don also worked on Aquaman, Batman and The Phantom. My memory is foggy, but I seem to recall that Don Newton took over for Jack Kirby's Fourth World when Jack left DC to go back to work for Marvel. Is that correct, or am I thinking of someone else?

Here's a link to the page.
