It won't be king because there is no graded 9.8 AF 15. If there was, that would beat the X-Men issue.

highest graded is highest graded. If the X-Men 9.8 hits the market, it will sell for well over 1.5 million, probably closer to 2 million. The 9.6 X-men will then equal or exceed 1.1 million.

If a 9.8 shows up yes maybe a 9.6 closer to the end of the year could break it. As for #1 spot never ever and I love the X-Men. Spiderman is king today and forever in the silver age.

I love Spidey, but if you remember we were all sayin the same thing about the FF when the Bryan Singer X-Men 2000 film came out. Look whut happened in the the past 20 years. Unbulievable and unfathomable! X-Men are unstoppable! And #1 is the first appearance of 7 major marvel characters (cept maybe iceman and angel). Yikes! I'm inclinin to change my answere and say yes to both questions!

I am 95% sure that the numbered SDCC copies of that are the only copies of that, and I don't believe that it has been reprinted anywhere. The Hernandez brothers were quite fond of this sort of thing, and they did quite a few of these little mini- or micro-comics in print runs of 20-50 or so (including at least four "issues" of People I've Known in My Mind).

Anyway, nice piece. This sort of offball Hernandez stuff gets harder to find as the years pass. Most of it has been black hole-d into Hernandez fans' collections by now.

Thanks for reply. Any idea on the value? Wondering if I should send it in for grading.

  4. Is anyone familiar with this comic?  "Crime Stoppers of America" by Beto. It's a limited edition of 30, with a sketch and signature on the inside cover by Beto. From Beto at the the 2002 San Diego Con.

Just wondering if there were more of these printed without the sketch, limited edition and signature. I was hoping to find a reading copy.

    Thanks!

  5. How do I schedule a signing of multiple comics by an artist? I purchased a couple hundred comics from a well-known, self-published creator/writer/artist about 35 years ago. I visited his table at the end of a show and he was clearing out inventory to make room for his next project. I placed the comics in bags and boards and stashed them safely away. I made it a point to visit the artist several times over subsequent years till I stopped attending shows and collecting comics. I'm in the process of thinning my collection and I'm thinking about paying the artist to sign and maybe add sketches to the comics. The comics are unread. They are in great shape and I've changed the bags and boards as needed over the years. Any advice is welcome. Thanks in advance for viewing and replying.

  6. Submit them yourself. You have more control. The less hands on your comics, the better. I would not send more than 4 comics the first time. You will have to do some homework- e.g watch youtube videos and research other forums. I actually did not submit my first comics till a couple months after buying my CGC membership - I had thousands of doubts and questions!  Also- as you go through the process, don't hesitate to post any questions or concerns on this forum. There are some very kind and helpful people here. After you get past the first sub, it will be MUCH easier the next time!  Good Luck!

I haven’t dug into the scans you provided, but I see spine wear and can see some issues at the bottom staple.  Those things are knocking you down into the low 8.0 range at the absolute best.  Corners soft/rounded?  That’s another .5/1.0 off.  Down to 7.0 if everything else is perfect.

6.0 is probably the right grade if you dissect it (even if it looks like a VF).  When was the book submitted?  There was a time when they just clobbered the mid-grade range.

Yeah, I'm probably missing something simple. Thanks.

Not likely. CGC doesn't downgrade for miswraps except maybe for 9.9s and 10s and the placement of the staples is a minimal hit, if anything.

Neither should ding the grade (except in the ubergrades).  Very, very common on SA Marvels.

I don't think that either should impact the grade other than preventing it from being Mint or Gem Mint.

The miswrap is just status quo for the 60's. I'm not 100% sure about the stapling, though.

    Thanks for your replies.

Hmm.....I'm having trouble figuring out why this got a 6.0. Cover looks better than several of my other graded SA that received 8.0 and higher. No grader notes on front cover.  Back cover- light crease right top of back cover multiple creases left top of back cover. But I've had those same grader notes on other SA comics that have graded higher. What am I missing?

That was the method of stapling in the Silver Age, if I'm not mistaken.

The spine position is what is called a "wrap". Many would consider this a "miswrap".

It's a miswrap and those staples are not where they're supposed to be.

Here's another TOS #48 with staples inserted from the front cover, but without the miswrap.

Thanks for replying. So if I'm understanding correctly, it's two separate defects- 1) Staples in the wrong place, and 2) A misrap.

Any idea how much these defects affect a grade? Which one is considered more severe?

  10. What is this printing defect (or defects) called? I posted some pictures, hoping they are clear. The staples are in the back of the book, not on the spine. And the spine is folded so that part of the cover is on the back of the book.

This comic looks like an 8-8.5.  I'm guessing it received a 6.0 because of the mentioned defects.

You're asking why a book sold cheap at auction?

    Because a 2nd bidder didn't bid higher.

    Was this your book?

Regarding your first question-  You asked a "why" question, as I did in my original post. Your answer regarding the bidding process answers a "how" question, not a why question.

Regarding your second question- Nope, not my book. But I have one in similar grade and I'm trying to get ideas on when to send it to auction. Looks like everyone else got the idea of my OP and gave me some good info. I hope I continue to see more informative responses.

Have yourself a great weekend, my friend!

I was following this book and several early ASM's, most of which went a decent bit below what I expected, so there were some soft sales this round on CLink. Could be folks saving up/spending at cons, summer money seems a bit tight. I already spent everything I'd amassed before this auction came up, so I wasn't around to drive the prices up on the books I was watching. As VintageComics alluded to, depends on who's in the game at the time.

Yeah, this crossed my mind once or twice- seasonal effects on prices.  I'm still new to the auction side of CGC comic books.
