Captain America Comics #1 Club
GreatCaesarsGhost replied to Wayne-Tec's topic in Golden Age Comic Books
I remember that. They had the 13 on the internet priced at $200k. I think it finally went for $100k in auction. 9.4, it was -
I’ve sort of stayed out of this discussion, but here we go. Maybe a year ago I bought a book that became the subject of intense board discussion because, unbeknownst to me at the time of purchase, it was a crack, press and resubmit. Turns out someone on the boards recognized it has having sold for a much higher price a year before I bought it. When I bought the book, I got it for a more reasonable price. Between the difference in hammer price and their regrading fee, I think the “crack, press, resubmit” guy lost $30k. So It was a huge fail for someone, and it upset me greatly, as the unwitting buyer. The first 2 images are of how it sold 2 years ago: The next 2 images show the book when I bought it a year later: So the pressing damaged the book by loosening another centerfold wrap, but because the wrinkles were pressed out, it ironically received the same grade. I talked to Matt Nelson about this, and he said he wasn’t the one who pressed it; it came back to CGC cracked out and already pressed by someone else. I guess this explains the new CGC number. And oh by the way, a second grading resulted in a lower PQ rating. Altogether, a very unsatisfactory result for someone. so, I have respect for Vintage_roy and all the rest who are proponents of pressing, but here is a real live example of a book being damaged by it

Upgrades would be nice, but I don’t want to get strapped back into the discomfort that comes with that little issue called PAYMENT. Fortunately, you and Batman_fan were right. This morning I woke up to that email that I have been outbid. Normally not my favorite email, but today it was. I’m surprised at the early run up for the 5.5 Cap1 over Bat 1.

Primetime just posted a SDCC pic of a Cap 1 with defects that uncannily match defects in my own Cap 1, prompting this thread. I recognize and respect the body of knowledge out here on these boards as far superior to my own, and I’m hoping someone notices this post and responds. First, here is Primetime’s pic: See the “gouged out” spine near the staple? It’s such an odd defect. Until I saw this defect duplicated in the above book, it never occurred to me that it might be what’s left after the removal of restoration. Here’s my book, for comparison. Sorry for the bad photos.

I agree Bat will dominate in the future. And I do think Bat 1 will overcome Supe 1 due to the fact that except for 2 new origin pages, the latter is a book of reprints. The 2 origin pages are fantastic, don’t get me wrong.

The first 10 Simon & Kirby issues were once treated like royalty. I don’t know why(except for Caps 2 and 3) they’ve faded into the background. Maybe a general perception that they were overpriced. There are no major villains or character developments made, unlike say, Amazing Spider-Man. And some of the covers seem goofy to me. But you are right. The first group of issues don’t seem to get the respect they deserve -

Mr Bedrock can probably give us some info on this. A few years ago a hurricane hit Houston and flooded many safe deposit boxes. We had a mutual friend adversely affected by this

First of all, that’s funny. Second of all, I guess you and Cat are saying that a large portion of the Planet collectors shot their wad chasing the Church copies, creating a momentary vacuum in the Planet chase. But once coffers get built back up again, the Planet market will return to its old levels of madness. I ended up with the Church 58, and have failed to notice any drop off in the bidding frenzy

Can we have some SDCC pics ?
GreatCaesarsGhost replied to Gotham Kid's topic in Golden Age Comic Books
If this is a complete, coverless(color copy) of a Cap 1, $18k seems like a good price. If this is a complete copy with 2/3rds original cover, $18k seems like an even better price -
Unpopular Golden Age Opinions Thread!
GreatCaesarsGhost replied to Point Five's topic in Golden Age Comic Books
Here’s mine. I am reminded by the new OPG annual how tired I am of the unrelenting and over-the-top enthusiasm in each marketplace report about how great the previous year has been. I love the fact based reports but could use a little less of the rah rah rah. I don’t need it anymore. You already had me at Hello -
