Just because something is in the public domain, doesn't mean there's a free-for-all for the character. Disney's early cartoons, including Steamboat Willie almost fell in to the public domain a while ago, but Disney owns the trademark on The Mouse. That alone could keep others from profiting on the public domain materials.

I bought this one yesterday. Walked into my LCS and the owner asked if I collected Frazetta Famous Funnies covers. It seems he bought a complete set. My initial response was "No," but then I said, "I think there's only two answers to that question if you collect golden age: yes and let me see the books."

Structurally, this book has great gloss and is probably a 6.5 to 7.0. Unfortunately for the book and fortunately for my wallet, someone used this book as a base to slice something with an exacto knife. There's a two-inch slice through the cover near the woman that goes into the first five or six pages. That knocked the grade down to VG.

Never expected to win this, but somehow I did:

Been trying to get a decent copy for awhile now. Do you think the RH stamp was a big turn-off?

The stamp was probably a turn-off but I find it interesting as it gives the book a certain provenance.

So now my 7.5 with white pages that WAS the highest graded issue is now the second highest graded. What are the odds of there being three issues from 1941 being graded and two of them having white pages? And how improbable is it that it would be a Fiction House comic?

 

Aside from my instant urge to strangle you for taking away my highest graded status, that's a beautiful book.

Well Seank, here's what I would do for you..........

 

I don't want to see you in prison for strangling me, and I would hate to be strangeld anyway ( sounds violent and icky ).

 

I would sell my highest graded 29 to you for $2,000 ( a very fair price considering it's NM- , has WHITE pages, and is the highest graded copy likely never to be topped ). You could sell your VF- for .....oh, let's say $750. This means for $1250 out of your pocket after your sale, you can go back to owning the highest graded copy with identical unimprovable PQ.

 

The offer is on the table buddy....you can let my book really bother you, or you can make it yours!

Were I to spend $1250 on a book I already own, assuming I could sell the 7.5 for $750, my wife would strangle us both. And I'm really happy with the 7.5 anyway. I'd rather put the $$$$ Jumbos I don't already have.

As Jumbo 29 is probably my oldest book now, I have to say that reading the back cover was far more interesting and fun than ogling the front cover.

The first Mitzi page had me doubting Baker art, but the last two panels on the second page are classic Baker. When did this book come out?

 

June 1947. Here's some more classic Baker look in that story. I also find that Baker has a particular way to portray women running and he loves to show women's knees when they are sitting on the floor / desk / grass / ... -

 

June 47? He was at his best around then. Did he get a bad inker for this story perhaps?
