PGM ASM #129 - UPDATE THE GRADE IS IN
comicginger1789 replied to Matt1982's topic in Hey buddy, can you spare a grade?
7.0 at worst, 8.0 at best so I shall settle with 7.5 -
Some of these examples are mind bending....who are these people!?!?! I get grading a book for you but those should never appear on ebay. I feel like we should message each of these seller and make them promise to never send books to CGC again in their lives

Disappointing Grade is in: Thor 165
comicginger1789 replied to scburdet's topic in Hey buddy, can you spare a grade?
Lots of little things on this one...bottom edge wear, apparent crease or scratch on the back, little indents and dings to the front cover. A press should help but I am at 6.0-6.5 -

Can I go out of order? I know Hong Kong Phooey is 60 only because I watched and also enjoy Submine's cover of that theme song. -
What has been said here is correct. I also think leaving such issues in bound form is worth more than trying to separate them and get them graded. I could be wrong but I would be MUCH more likely to buy a bound volume containing ASM issues than I ever would but a trimmed copy in CGC, even knowing it was once in a bound volume.

comicginger1789 replied to BlackOut21's topic in Golden Age Comic Books
I know that, my apologies as I was unclear. I specifically meant that for the Big Apple one, most are higher...that's all. Especially the Golden Age ones. 5.5 was lowest Big Apple I could find. Many are 7.0-9.0 or so. -
Common ASM 265 Flaw
comicginger1789 replied to comicginger1789's topic in Comic Book Grading and Restoration Issues
Probably keeps from a 9.8. Otherwise if it is just a printing defect that’s common it might have no effect. The book as is VF+ without it so I doubt that mark changes much -
PGM Avengers Annual 10 and is it worth C&P?
comicginger1789 replied to KCode98's topic in Hey buddy, can you spare a grade?
9.4-9.6 I would press for best results but if you really don't want to spend the extra $20 and are happy with 9.4ish, then leave as is. A telling sign would be to hold under good lighting yourself. Tilt and try to get a sense of any indents that may present themselves. Those could pressed if they exist, thus improving chances at best grade possible. -

^ Very true Sadly, some of the most untrustworthy folks start off as seemingly so in order to drop an egg on you. Case in point the lovely CGC boardie who joined before Christmas, seemingly fit in and participated, joined a couple gift exchanges and then proceeded to claim/receive some gifts from people while not sending any of his own promised donations out. Again, seemingly friendly, cordial and someone who participated within our community here but alas, unless something tragic has prevented him from being here for 4 months, was only ever here to swindle. -

2.0 from me. 2.5 would be absolute best, 1.8 absolute worst -

Not sure how to search registry for pedigree books but the lowest graded I could find with a quick Gershmoogle is a 5.5 copy of a GA book Another thing (and this is after looking at about 50 or so images), I have NOT seen a Big Apple book with other markings on them...yours has two 6's scribbled in an entirely different colour on top edge in addition to the pencil markings. Unless this copy was clean and somehow, from the time the owner died to the time they were found, this book got out into circulation through the 70s and 80s and got beat up in addition to getting written on...I think you are at the unfortunate end of a series of lies as someone at some point thought they could pass this off as a pedigree book. Likely during the 90s/early 2000s when these books were selling well at Christie's and someone thought they would take a chance and create a lie. -

This is how I felt...to my limited knowledge, the condition on many Big Apple books is much better. Yes the marking is similar but when you consider that these books were bought by an original owner and then found (to my knowledge relatively untouched since the late 60s) in the 90s and sold throughout the end of that decade, I find it hard to believe that the book got in this poor of shape since then (even if it did change hands). It would have been bought with the prestige by a collector and likely still look as it did in the early 90s. I have seen similar pencil marks on covers of books so I am guessing CGC does not attribute that alone as a sole indicator. If you can provide better proof (this "reliable" guy you bought from must have a story...I would start there and trace it back as far as possible to see if a legit Big Apple book is in your possession). My gut feeling is you were lied to...either indirectly or directly. -

Also, I would NOT use Go Collect for FMV. The way they collect data and include it in their calculations is wrong. For example, a book on ebay is listed at $500 or best offer. Someone submits an offer of $425 and the seller accepts. Go Collect counts that as a $500 sale for a book and includes that in their FMV, thus inaccurate FMVs for books. There are other sites that, with flaws of their own, at the very least they don't make errors like this when calculating their FMV. Cvr price is not terrible and neither is GPA analysis for graded stuff. If you are using Go Collect, I usually take their FMV with a grain of salt. So seeing $500 tells me it is probably closer to $400. At the end of the day, you will know if you list your book for $500 and it sits for 2+ months. If you don't sell a key comics within a couple weeks, you either are advertising poorly or pricing it poorly because there are always buyers for keys. -

1. Why is there no one out there who has a reasonable turnaround time? Because every collector ever including those who never sent stuff to CGC started to in the last 1.5 years. CGC never expected it, the other guys never expected it and thus they were overwhelmed and still are. You cannot just hire graders overnight and expect them to be good. Training takes time. They only have/had 20 graders. So unless people wanted inaccurate grades, they have had to be patient while CGC and even the other companies, adjust. Could they have done a better job and been more prepared? Sure but that is another argument. 2. Why would I pay 40 or 50 bucks for a hopefully a 100 buck comic? Not every book should be graded. In fact, this is probably why (in part) CGC is so behind. Everyone thought there comics were getting a bump so books that traditionally would have never been sent (6.0-8.0 range stuff from the late 80s) was getting sent en masse. I pray that if you are sending in a book purely for resell, you make sure it is worth your time and CGCs. If you are sending because you love the book and just want it slabbed, that is different. 3. So I am ready to get my key comics graded and go from there, but I get to wait a year???? Pay the couple bucks more for quicker times. If a book is not worth spending $10-15 more on to get it back quicker, it is probably not worth sending in in the first place. Granted, if you are sending hundreds of books I can see why you want to try to save some coin. If that's the case, you just gotta get in line like the rest of us and wait. I will conclude by saying you may actually want to wait. Why? Comics are dropping. That Moon Knight run you mentioned back in May is nowhere near the value. I saw sales of higher grade full runs hitting $700-800 or so back in April. Latest sale on a high grade full run was $475. -
Magic The Gathering modern Comics
comicginger1789 replied to Ben Mandley's topic in Newbie Comic Collecting Questions
For your investment question, I think you have to think of it like this. Are there die hard comic collectors? Yes. And while there are many, it is still a very small percentage of the population. I would argue die hard Magic fans are even smaller (maybe I am wrong here). For these comics, you are trying to find the die hard magic person who loves the cards and has to also have the comics....for me, that is a rare person to find and a group I do not see growing over time thus, not a great investment. I sold a pile of Magic comics (no clue how old) a couple months ago for $20...was for like 75 comics. This was after posting on a comic site for weeks, a second facebook site AND even a Magic group. I had them listed for $40, but that included shipping so I really only made $20 -
Finding/Buying A Collection: The Imagination Stage

My coworker decided that since there is nothing of immense value in the collection, she is going to keep them and share with her kids. I got her a nicer bag and board for the Four Color ish in case she ever does sell it and told her the significance. -

I think it depends where you are. Rural areas are where ya need to go. Any major city, yeah I feel enough collectors exist there and have found stuff like that. Cities where there are 20000-75000 people are the ones I think still hold some treasures -
Mangasee Review - Is Mangasee Safe?
comicginger1789 replied to franklampard1992's topic in Newbie Comic Collecting Questions
It is....definitely not the easiest read...and the art is so obscure it is hard to even tell what is happening sometimes. So for some, it is hard to enjoy. I initially hated it but that was a decade ago. Now, diving into it, I appreciate it more. Still not my most favourite thing in the world but I can appreciate what it is trying to do. Makes me wonder if it would work better if drawn in a more traditional sense.
