I’m curious what the story is behind this book…why does it seem to have value? I had never heard of it until recently and am just curious why and if it is sought after?

PGM G.I. Joe #1
comicginger1789 replied to Real Frantic One's topic in Hey buddy, can you spare a grade?
Spine is great. Top left corner is that colour rub? Back corner will press out. 9.2-9.4 for me, higher would not be surprising once pressed but I think a press gets to a 9.4 -
Is Batman 222 the next Batman 227?
comicginger1789 replied to Randall Ries's topic in Comics General
I teach high school and kids still know and listen and have a Beatles section or a few songs they listen to on their playlists (I enjoy hearing what music they like and usually ask as an icebreaker question to start the year) so I think we are still a loooooong ways from them going anywhere. However having their music and listening to it is very different from collecting their memorabilia. I really enjoy the Beatles and get in a Beatles kick once a year usually where I play through my favs. But I have zero desire to collect stuff related to them. That avenue may (already is?) be dying off in which case a book like Batman 222 might also lose steam rather than gain. -
Spine looks a bit worse than my 9.2 (which is a 9.2 because of the spine according to the notes) so I will venture 8.5-9.0

My methods are very basic - basic pencil erasers for small spot cleaning -moldable rubber eraser for larger areas - chimney soot sponge -drafting eraser Between the four I am able to clean up most of that contact dirt and grime that is seen on the backs of many comics from the 60s-80s. Before I touched any of the books I cared about, I practiced on a stack of ratty torn and stained up books I have. I still go super gentle on my stuff and a professional could probably do a better job but as someone who just does for fun to neaten up my raws (and does to a few books before submitting to CGC), it works for me. I just found that when I used the magic eraser, you have to be very very focused. Too much pressure gouges the cover. Not enough and you dont do anything. The methods I use are much less forgiving. You don't have to be as focused and can just casually do without worrying too much about causing damage. And the only one I used on coloured areas is the moldable eraser, which I kind of just roll around on the book. I usually stick to cleaning white areas only as that is where it is most noticeable. In addition, a paper towel gently rubbed over the entire book will remove the gritty feel if needing to on coloured areas. Again, be mindful of pressure as certain paper towel brands can remove ink.

I would be hilarious to see a comedy done about Rick Jones...and to have him say "I'm Rick Jones bistaches!"

Gets a 7.0 from me. -
Thrilling Crime Cases 49
comicginger1789 replied to Rip's topic in Hey buddy, can you spare a grade?
A 4.0-4.5 would not surprise me even with pieces missing from bottom edge. -
I'm closer to 6.5. You've got some spine ticks, bottom of spine wear and corner creases on leading edge. Back and spine are sharp tho.

PGM House of Secrets 92 - GRADE IS IN!
comicginger1789 replied to Msgarmar's topic in Hey buddy, can you spare a grade?
1.8-2.0. Rusty staples will kill it. -
Agree with this

X-Factor 1 2nd attempt
comicginger1789 replied to ComicSpa's topic in Hey buddy, can you spare a grade?
7.5 from me too. Might get 8.0 but the spine ticks are deep and heavy, small corner crease bottom right, small white crease or scratch on cover, edges and corners arent perfect. -
I find Rick Jones interesting in the regard that he is always just there. I feel like there is a compelling story to be told with or about him somewhere....

I agree with what has been said and will add this If someone was to replace staples, why would they do so? Only reason I would see is that the original staples were rusty. If that were the case, you would likely find rust spots on the centrefold or along spine where the rusty staples make contact with the book. Also, the fact that if someone were to replace staples, why would they replace them with stapes that look like they already have some rusty or discolouration to them? Those staples appear to have some discolouring to them. If replaced, I would suspect the person doing it to use an era correct staple that was clean..... For these reasons, I do not think they are replaced. Rather the staple has torn through part of the cover leaving that rips and leaving the cover loose. Common on older books and often denoted on CGC grade books in the VG to Fine range

I feel the same way. I have not really read much involving Rick beyond Captain Mar-Vell so I wondered outside of this how he is received.

X-men 221 question- cover defect?
comicginger1789 replied to CheeseFrog's topic in Comic Book Grading and Restoration Issues
I had similar spot near top staple of my AM 361 I sent in. I cleaned it with my tools and removed the smudge from mine. Don't think it is a printing error though, just ink/contact smudge. Might not get a 9.8 though if present....
