    Ah, right.

    About that...

A quick read through the beginning of the Amazing Spider-Man series shows me that the first usage of "Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man" appears to be in Amazing Spider-Man #17 (Marvel, 1963).

From July 1974 (#134) to June 1975 (#145), I had a subscription to Amazing Spider-Man.  In those days the comics were folded over and stuffed into paper sleeves that were open on both ends.  They all, naturally, have a subscription crease at a minimum and others have wear/mailing damage at the top and or bottom in the middle of the book.  Not really sure how I arrived at the bonehead notion that this was a good idea.  I had plenty of access to books off the rack at a local independent grocery store and was heading out to at least one or two LCS's at least twice a month.  In any case, I now have the delightful opportunity to pay many dollars for books I could have had for a quarter.  Young and foolish.  I've been trying to pick up higher-grade raw copies of Bronze Age ASM's of which I have had only subscription copies for over 45 years.  Here's an upgrade from today's mail, courtesy of @ft88

I was very fortunate to have discovered mail order at an early age.  I did have a subscription starting around ASM 193 or so,  but many of my earlier issues were all from mail order.

My $3 mail order ASM 129 was around an cgc 8.0.

    That's superb, isn't it :cloud9:

It is truly a gem.  I was literally going to come over here and post that exact same image Steve, that's how inspired I was with it (and bored at work, if I am honest).

Notice how Frank Giacoia reduced the number of rows of webbing on Spidey's mask from 4 down to 3.  I think I like Ross's original better.

Oh, does anyone think Punisher looked good with blue boots?   It's a big no from me.

Hi Reggie and all!  A few weeks ago I shared an image of a vintage photocopy of the partially inked page-one splash art to Amazing Spider-Man #129.  This image was part of a full set of vintage photocopies of the complete interior art to ASM #129 from the Dave Hunt estate.  When he started out at Marvel in the early 1970s, Dave sat in the Marvel Bullpen next to Frank Giacoia.  Dave and Frank would work on issues of ASM together, with Dave inking the backgrounds and Frank inking the main characters.  I assume that Dave made and kept photocopies of his inks on the partially inked pages to document his contributions to the finished art.  Dave's estate has decided to auction this set of vintage photocopies at ComicLink:

    https://www.comiclink.com/auctions/item.asp?back=%2FAUCTIONS%2FPREVIEW.ASP%3Fcode%3D2022nov%26itemtype%3D1%26x%3D31%26y%3D14%26pg%3D3%23Item_1640782&id=1640782&itemType=1

I'm sorry I was not able to scan more images before this went to ComicLink, but ComicLink has provided a few additional scans.  And any of you can now own it, with the auction proceeds going to Dave's family.  Please feel free to share the auction listing.  Thanks!  Best regards, Lee

@Lee B., too funny, I just found this today on comiclink and was going to post about it.

I always thought Dave brought so much to Amazing Spider-Man.

I hope this goes for a billion dollars (although my salary would not be able to pay anywhere near its worth).

Thanks for bringing this to the attention of our little thread.  Just an incredible find.

Yes Andru was on a pretty good tear by that time.  I'm almost sure those 2 were from the same submission. Both came from Lone star comics.

Really nice books.  If I ever were to replace some of my fondest issues, that ASM 145 would be one of them.

Nicely done, Reggie, as always. I wonder if we should have a competition to write the missing dialogue for page two? It looks like one of those 'maybe a bit of web-swinging will banish the blues' type pages when Spidey was down in the dumps due to his life being a pile of it. Although the 'blues' on this occasion may have been more of the monthly type, if you catch my drift?

What's the betting the dialogue was along the lines of 'I'll put on my special claws" then "My mask will keep my identity secret" etc. etc.

I bet you are correct on all fronts Steve.  That page 2 does have a Parkeresque feel to it, no doubt.

I've seen some of these pages identified with different numbers, but for the most part, I think I have it correct.

  7. Thanks @ADAMANTIUM!  Not sure I really had a tone per se.  I read on another board someone said they would like to see the book put back together, so I thought I would give it a shot.  I don't think I would have exactly enjoyed this story, but hard to tell without some of the missing pages and dialogue.

I like the Fradon/Mooney combination, and I enjoyed Ramona's new take on the Cat's costume design as well.  Would have been interesting to see what color it would have been.  Ramona has drew it apart from this issue and colored it red.  Hmmm.....

Spot on Reggie. I think Buscema was the first time I really noticed different art styles as a kid (in the UK weeklies) but the end of the Andru run was more or less the end of Spidey, for me. Some good followed of course, but those first 185 issues are Spidey, and always will be.

Funny, with my collection long sold, I only have reprints of the stories now.  Typically, my reprints stop at Amazing Spider-Man 185.

I know this will probably sound silly, and the memory cheats of course, but I'm sure this story was the first time I was consciously aware that 'someone else' was drawing Spidey.

The first time I really noticed was when Ross left after issue 185.  Issue 186 was just so different and unappealing to me.  I sometimes say that it was the end of my Bronze Age.   Ross's departure from Amazing Spider-Man really resonated with me as a twelve year old.
