  1. 2 months into the quarantine and I still haven't seen a reduction in prices for 3-4 figure books, which is what I am looking at. I guess people who could afford this hobby can because they are financially responsible (for the most part) and thus are able to sustain these habits even in these times.
  2. 100% And I will say, right now I am happy to be around all you wonderful like minded gents
  3. Even though B has a corner chip? I thought they were around the same. Like both on the 6.0 spectrum, judging front cover alone.
  4. Right, that's what I thought. I mean that's why they use the integers from overstreet and not those from Metropolis. In that case, the CGC grading standards are not that much of a black box in terms of universal grades so I don't really see an issue. Using the over street standards should never put you at unfavorable odds when sending books in to CGC.
  5. I've found that while CGC does not disclose their grading standards, they are in line with the Overstreet grading guide, at a minimum. Basically, every comic I ever graded using the overstreet standards has come back from CGC in that grade or better.
  6. Still not a thing in general: I am just learning about them now and have been part of this collecting world for 15 years. For some reason, they never really came upon my radar even though they'd have what I am looking for. And everything just looked so off compared to everything else I experienced. Hence my questions. And I am curious as to what Maggie replied, did she ever? Because I too am curious as to why they are allowed to slide.
  7. Really cool story about those planet comics, congrats on those! I have had great experiences with Mycomicshop as well. I find their technique of undergrading as a rule pretty smart since the customer wont be dissapointed and since their volume is so great, prices on their auction items usually end up bigger than on other sites due to people knowing the grade might be higher. So in the end, it comes out to the same but the level of satisfaction is higher. And I do like how they also judge their consigned books. I have dealt with Harley and his grading is top notch. I bought a GA book that looked mint (I had never seen such a pretty book in my life) but since there were some minor rust stains near the staples, he marked it down to a VF, which is the first grade allowing for such a defect, and priced it as such as well. I was more than happy to give him my money. Someone mentioned Hertiage and while their grading standards are fine (they do hire ex CGC employees) and they know what's what, I really dislike their practice of judging by the cover. For lesser grade/valued GA books, they won't bother removing it from the bag it came to them in and looking inside to see if a coupon has been cut or a page is missing or the book is falling apart. It's not worth their time on the off chance that they catch something. Instead, they'll just accept a return if you find such a flaw for them after you received it. And it can be years later. It's a method that works well enough to keep people coming back. But still, I'd rather they did the work instead of me since they are the ones grading the book.
  8. Here is my advice. Go here and buy this: https://www.amazon.com/Overstreet-Guide-Grading-Comics-2016/dp/1603601996/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=overstreet+grading+guide&qid=1589996994&sr=8-1 It shows examples of books in all grades possible along with descriptions of what is accepted as defects in each grade and what is not. Match up what you see with your comics. if you are not sure between certain grades, it's best to pick the lower grade just in case. Then write the grade down for each of the books you have (start with the first 50) and look up on e-bay in the previously sold to see what books in that specific grade sold. And there you'll know how much what you have is worth.
  9. The grading standards are actually similar across the board. You can read them on mycomicshop, heritage and metropolis. The problem is Metropolis does not adhere to the grading standards they themselves set. Perfect example, this here is taken from their site: https://www.comicconnect.com/article/grading_criteria "GOOD (GD) (ONE 1.8-2.5) A copy in this grade has all pages and covers, although There may be small pieces missing inside; the largest piece allowed from front or back cover is a ½” triangle or square ¼” by ¼”. Books in this grade are commonly creased, scuffed, abraded, soiled and may have as much as a 2” spine split, but are still completely readable. Often, paper quality is low but not brittle. Cover reflectivity is low, and in some cases, completely absent. This grade can have a moderate accumulation of defects, but still maintains its basic structural integrity." They clearly chose not to adhere to that. And by their standards on the link I posted, that Marvel Family 48 wouldn't even qualify for a 5.5, so I have no clue why they put it as a 7.0.
  10. Comic Connect (where these pics were taken from) don't provide the back cover. So this is all I have to go on. I am interested, but not sure about the grades they put.
  11. They also sell plenty of slabbed books, it's not like they don't have an idea. Makes them seem really disingenuous.
  12. Well in the end, I was more curious if anyone here agreed with the grades being shown on comic connect I presented here. So far it's a no from both you and Keys_collector.
  13. Yeah they do, but then you see that the price they list it as is what grade it resembles more (so a VG looking book selling for a VG price but listed as a GD/VG). But I am ok with that, it's a technique a lot of dealers do like that they cover their butts and avoid both returns and client dissatisfaction if they choose to send their books in for professional grading.
  14. Such as how pages missing affects the grade. Or spines being split or the cover being detached. Even you wrote as such when I asked about the brave and the bold 200 which looked really nice but was almost completely detached. We do have a set of standards (set by what we get back from CGC and what we see in the overstreet grading guide). Or else the Help Me grade thread would yield a much larger range. No one is identifying vgs as vfs there.
  15. Wondering what you guys think are the grades for these two books of the same issue I found on comic connect. No back covers available sadly. ISSUE A ISSUE B
  16. For sure. But I was talking about another kind of nuts, the one where it's just not the grade they say it is. Or at least that's what I think. Here's the thread I made, you'll let me know if you see it too or if I am the one who's off:
  17. And I mean obviously off. Like, I don't think sending these to CGC would give me anything close to what is being suggested here. And I was skimming through the raw stuff on comic connect and ... ouch. But just so I am sure I myself am not off or expecting too much, I wanted to run it by you guys. This here is said to be a 7.0, WTF?! You can see from the spine that this could never be that. https://www.comicconnect.com/item/415679 Here's another 7.0 that I don't think would get that grade back if sent to CGC And here's a "2.5" that's missing pages https://www.comicconnect.com/item/329931 You can't be missing pages at a 2.5, and it wouldn't get qualified with such a beat up book like this:
  18. Right, I agree on that. I was just about to make a post on how the comic connect raw grades look absolutely nuts at the moment.
  19. oh man, you are in for such a treat! Totally agree on your assessment. Season 3 takes it up a notch like you wouldn't believe.
  20. The crazy thing is that's not even true anymore. At least not a hard set rule as indicated. There are a bunch of mid grade keys that sell better when raw. The 5.0 range is the sweet spot since some imperfections could be pressed, turning it into a 7.0 or something of the sort and it being worth a lot more (seeing that big time with Hawkman 4 at the moment). While a 5.0 already in a slab, the grade is set in stone for the most part, unless you want to play the crack/press/reslab game which is always a gamble. And when it comes to the Fawcett Comics I collect, there seems to be no premium for slabbed books for the most part (the few keys are usually slabbed anyway so there's not much to compare).
  21. Sadly, the seller only needs to refund you what you gave them. You are not unreasonable but nether are they for not wanting to spend more than they owe you. It would be nice if they do, but you can't expect/demand it. They too have now lost money on these books (they wont be able to sell them for what they thought they would). Also, there are services that look for restoration before you grade the book, so that could have been used instead. Next time before you send a book in, we do have a thread for questons about restoration. You could post pics there and we could let you know what we think, free of charge And I am glad things worked out for you!
  22. You did right by the OP, more than any of us. And of course none of that was against you. Take care man and while you are on Netflix, check out the Ozark, that's my big quarantine discovery (obviously, I am very late to the game on that one). Cheers and good night!
