  4. It's always been my understanding that type is distributor return spray, a remaindered book, the equivalent of a stripped cover. "Regular" overspray was used to serve as a quick visual guide to denote to date the month when a book was to be removed from the shelves for newer stock, a quick swatch on the top edge of a book usually in different colors. The heavy all-over blue ink was a way of qualifying the book for return credit. Again, IIRC, a lot of these came out of New York.
