California Comic Convention 2019 ( CalComicCon)
joeypost replied to TerrysComics's topic in Comic Events
Sad that the shows over. Buying was good, selection was great and saw a ton of friends. Greatest comic central show of the year and one of my favorites. The show is bursting at the seams as it was very busy all day, and could easily grow into a 2 day show. A big thanks to Mr. T for another great show.- 125 replies

Pressing recommendations?
joeypost replied to Darkowl's topic in Comic Book Grading and Restoration Issues
I am. Was doing the update at the airport. Took the pictures the night before. -
I don’t have to guess, as I wrote down the number of books I pressed each month starting from 2006 to today. It is in the 6 digits.

Cal Comic Con 2019 Preview Night - Yorba Linda, CA - Jan 26

Very nice meeting everyone. A great way to start off a great show. -
That will live in infamy. My first show in like 25 year and I am in line to meet one of my comic heroes (Herb Trimpe) and some random dude in front of us ask him to sign, not a comic but this wooden box. Knew Chris for all of 20 minutes at that point. Chris and I will now walk together, forever over that exchange.

Pressing recommendations?
joeypost replied to Darkowl's topic in Comic Book Grading and Restoration Issues
Glossy paper is a nightmare. If this was pulp from a late bronze or copper age book I could have gotten those wrinkles out by looking at the book sternly. This is a classic example of someone thinking “I know what I am doing” and ruining a $500 book. If the heat used was 10 degrees higher this book would have been good for bird cage liner. Unfortunately this is not an isolated case, and I have to “undo” many books like this that have been damaged by guys that consider themselves professionals. On the plus side I get to try out new techniques without having to worry about ruining a book. -

Good candidate for pressing?
joeypost replied to emme_jay's topic in Comic Book Grading and Restoration Issues
He asked if it would improve. It has defects that are improvable. At a very minimum, the visual appeal would go up. IMO the technical grade would also go up. -

I do. Actually I see a lot that can be improved if done correctly. -

Personally I hate any tape near a book. If you are shipping multiple books simply put them in a larger bag with some cardboard inside the bag, and tape that shut. I get in some orders where the box weights 3 pounds and 2 of it is tape.
