  1. What you see is an example of spine roll. It can be repaired without any restoration being done to the book.
  2. Depending on what is used, all color touch does not bleed through. Without having the book in hand it might be a tear seal that was glued and colored in using crayon. That would be why there is no bleed through but the paper is darker on the inside of the cover in the affected area.
  3. There are commercial chemicals available to remove rust, but I am sure they would do much more damage to the paper’s integrity if used on comics. I may have to do a long term study on their affects.
  4. Gently using a brush with some stiffer bristles can remove a lot of the loose rust that accumulates in the paper and near the staple. While it won’t eliminate the rust, it will improve the look of the book, if all you care about is presentation.
  5. Not sure if everyone saw this before or has already been posted. Scrolled to the bottom of his home page.
  6. When I meant "off" it was in comparison to other restored books.
  7. I had the opportunity to hold and inspect 2-3 of these books at the Chicago dinner when all of this was coming to light. My opinion on two of the three books was the feel of the books was off. The one book, however had a very natural feel for a 60 year old book. In regard to the “look” of the books, it was hard to determine as they looked like a high grade book. I didn’t have any high intensity light or magnification to really look them ever, but I think the term frankenbook is a little harsh.
  8. I have been doing this a long time and have seen pretty much every defect a book can have.
  9. This is caused by improper storage and will get dinged a grade or two.
  10. If pressed and cleaned properly, it might have a shot at 9.8.
  11. For arguments sake, if you remove money from the equation, what’s left? All I see is reputation. Since that has also gone “poof” what other incentive is there?
  12. I cannot speak for everyone, but in my case 90% of my posting and communication on these boards has moved to PM. It wasn’t on purpose, it just happened organically.
