whatever is going on at the staple & a small bindery tear would definitely keep this out of the high 9s.

Grade is in: Wolverine 1 (1982, 2nd copy)
scburdet replied to scburdet's topic in Hey buddy, can you spare a grade?
Best for last. I like the idea of 1 book covering all or most of the cost of a set sent for signature. One of my 1st gen CGC copies is from this same batch (I'm almost sure the 2 new CGCS came from the same seller. Raw copies thrown in with the slab). The slab is a 9.2, so I'm wondering if it's actually much better by current standards since I assume they were trying to send their best copies to CGC for grading. -
Grade is in: Wolverine 1 (1982, 1st copy)

Happy about this. Would have been happier with another +0.2. I might have the most ridiculous collection of this book. 2 1st gen CGC copies, 2 signed copies & an ungraded newsstand. I think that's all.... -
Grade is in: Daredevil 168
scburdet replied to scburdet's topic in Hey buddy, can you spare a grade?
This is the one I might be happiest about b/c I had it down in my notes as a possible 8.0. I ID'd a little color rub on the TLFC & a little ding bottom center. I was really mentally preparing for disappointment. This came from a complete FM run I bought 20-25 years ago for probably less than his signing fee for 1 book, so quite happy. -
Grade is in: Spider-Woman 32

This one is on me for not inspecting this book closely, but I have a "good" excuse. I first tried to get some books to FM when CGC announced a private signing at NYCC, which my brother attended. They announced this with <2 weeks notice I recall. I sent them priority mail to NY from CT & they arrived at the distribution center near his house within 24 h. The USPS then sent them to NH, letting them sit there for over a day before sending them back to the same NY distribution center. Needless to say the books got a tour of the Northeastern US, not signed by FM. Then a facilitator announced a FM signing in Orlando, but that meant the books had to get there within ~2 weeks, so I had to get my brother to send them back to me (this is ~5 months after NYCC) before I could mail them to FL. This one wasn't actually in that group, but I pulled it out at the last minute. The grade from an almost always too conservative seller was a 9.2, so I don't think I checked this over thoroughly. Some of my FM signed books have traveled more in the last 6 months than I have in over a year. TL;DR I missed the stain. IMO, this is the different between something at least in the low 9s & this 8.0. I wasn't gunning for a 9.8 or anything, I just wouldn't have sent CGC another book with a stain even though it's a newsstand. To me, this is way too harsh with a small stain on the back cover. I do like this book though. It merges my love of comics & the classic Universal Monsters. I'm taking pics of my taped window bags from now on. I swear I had the box along the bottom. -
CGC hates stains, I could see this getting knocked down to 6.0/6.5. However, they view rust stains a bit more leniently, but that's usually rust transfer within the same book. So I'm not sure. I see this as an 8.0±0.5 in the absence of the rust stain. Maybe a spine roll to press out. A very nice looking book.

Spotted this defect and have a question
scburdet replied to Cushing Fan's topic in Hey buddy, can you spare a grade?
This is not really a PGM topic. See the pinned thread for guidelines. I'd put this in the Grading Issues forum with full photos. -

It looks like there might be some foxing on the edges of the back cover. Well c/p'd around 8.0 -
How much does color breaks affect grade

you need to quote or tag otherwise the commenter won't know you engaged. If the board had been active at all tonight, I never would have noticed. When considering pressing, you should look for non-color breaking dents/bends etc. There may be some of that here, but the improvements would be negligible. As you highlighted in the photos, there are multiple color-breaking tics along the spine and it appears the BRFC corner is blunted or otherwise not a sharp corner. Those types of defects will set the upper limit here, and any pressable defect probably won't matter one way or the other. For eye appeal, it could benefit though.
