  1. Hey @dbcn

Great question! The JSA Authentication add-on is further down the submission form. This is a selectable service and ONLY needs to be added if there is an additional unverified sig already on the book. If you do not have an unverified signature on the book already you can skip that JSA AA service add-on and move straight to the Add Comic section. Sorry for the confusion this may have caused! Thanks for checking!

    Hello @MattM CS!

Is it possible to have this signature verified WITHOUT having to regrade the book also?  Would rather not risk the grade of this book just for the new fancy label. Thank you!

Unfortunately, this service is only for books sent through grading. This is not currently being offered for reholder services. I am sorry for the inconvenience this may cause.

So another way to say this is it does not matter at all if you already had a signature authenticated by JSA. You still have to get it authenticated again. Unless I'm not understanding.

For most JSA Authenticated Signatures this is correct. If however you submitted through their WPP service, you will receive a full CGC SS Label. On the graders notes section in the certification lookup it will state if the book was witnessed by CGC or by JSA.

Also, what if a book was already verified by JSA? If you send it in with the verification does it need to be verified again?

    Sorry Missed this question!

Yes. You can now submit comics with JSA-authenticated autographs for CGC grading and encapsulation. Simply select an applicable grading tier and choose “JSA Autograph Authentication” as an add-on service. JSA authentication and CGC grading fees apply for all resubmissions because JSA will reauthenticate the autograph and CGC will regrade the comic. To provide an extra layer of scrutiny, even comics with autographs that were witnessed by JSA must also be submitted for autograph authentication.

This makes zero sense to me @MattM CS - so if there's an un-authenticated signature and a sketch on the cover it would get a blue label? Why wouldn't it get a green qualified label?

I read this as:  say I submit a book with my best impression of a Stan Lee signature and a really good drawing of Wolverine, done by me.

If I don't select the JSA authentication, I'm going to get a green label 'Name written in pen'  - but if I pay the $25 for JSA authentication, and it fails (which hopefully it would), I'd get a blue label? ???

This is a change with our Qualified Labels. Autographed comics will no longer be encapsulated with the CGC Qualified green label or CGC Signature Series Qualified green/yellow label. Instead, comics with not genuine or unverifiable autographs will be encapsulated with the CGC Universal blue label (the label and grader notes will identify the not-genuine or unverifiable autograph) or the CGC Signature Series label (the label and grader notes will identify the not-genuine or unverifiable autograph). Please note that the CGC Qualified green label will still be used for certain other qualifying factors, such as when a sketch will negatively impact the overall grade of a comic (see above).

Why would magazines not be included from the start? Its not like there are new cases.

Because our team wants to be sure our customers receive the best experience and turnaround time for this new service AND we expect a HUGE influx of books to be submitted to this from the get go, we will be releasing these new labels in steps for our Magazines, Pulps, Cards, and Posters. Be on the lookout for a future announcement when the addition of Magazines is announced.

A bit confused by how books with unwitnessed sig and sketch be treated. Says in the FAQ that "if the autograph is authentic, and it is determined that the sketch will negatively impact the overall grade of the comic, the comic will receive a CGC Qualified green label. Alternatively, if it is determined that the sketch will not negatively impact the grade of the comic, the comic will receive the CGC x JSA Authentic Autograph label."

But in the sample provided in the article, this Venom Lethal Protector got the new JSA label but the sketch presumably impacted the grade (hence the 9.6?) and the label doesn't note there is a sketch...?

The other company I believe would authenticate the signature and grade the book without the remark impacting the grade and simply note the sketch on the label.

Would appreciate some clarity as I have some books I would like to submit for this new program (see JSC signed and sketched Spider Gwen as an example).

This is a question I was asked in our other JSA chat as well. I am waiting for more information on this. Thanks for your patience!

I have the same question.  Do we pay the "reholder" fee + JSA fee, or do we pay the "grading" fee % + JSA?

The Authentication service is only available for new grading submissions. This is not available for reholder services.

In the case that a signed sketch cover is submitted, will it simply state "[Artist] Authenticated Autograph" with no mention of the sketch? Or will the label also note something like "with unverified sketch"?

If the autograph is authentic, and it is determined that the sketch will negatively impact the overall grade of the comic, the comic will receive a CGC Qualified green label. Alternatively, if it is determined that the sketch will not negatively impact the grade of the comic, the comic will receive the CGC x JSA Authentic Autograph label. If the autograph is not genuine, the comic will receive the CGC Universal blue label. In all scenarios, the label text and grader notes will indicate the outcome of JSA’s evaluation and state that a sketch is present on the comic.

So if I submit a qualified label slab, the book will be regraded and I'll be charged a grading fee in addition to the authentication fee?

Correct. The Authentication service is only available for new grading submissions. This is not available for reholder services.

what the heck is an autograph grading? is that separate from a comic grading or does it mean a combo of grading  your comic and verifying the signature at the same time?

This is an additional service to the Signature Authentication by CGCxJSA. Using this service we will review the condition of the signature. After signing so many books markers will dry out. In some cases, this can cause the signature to skip or smear. Another great example to explain the review of the condition of the signature that was used in the other JSA board was Stan Lee. Stan has the most recognizable signature across all of comics. In the 90s and early 2000s some of his signatures looked so crisp that you would think they were printed on. Examples from his final years before passing however can be found with a few smears, a little shaky, or skipping from Sharpies. These are some but not all of the things that are reviewed with this Signature Grading Service. There will be more information about this coming soon though as we have received alot of questions about this new offering.

    1) How many signatures can you include in one submission (not graded sigs, just verification)?  More than 2 I assume?

    2) are you going to offer a sig verification "pre-screen" where you can submit a photo (for a fee) and get an idea if the sig will pass or not? (like the other guys do).

    3) If more than one sig on a book and one fails, what happens ? The other guys consider that a fail on all sigs but keep all fees.

In other words if there are 10 signatures, and the first one they try to verify fails.. they stop there but keep all the money.

    1. Up to 99 per book (see example of what a label like this looks like here). As a reminder each signature is $25 despite if they are all on the same book or not.

    2. Not at this time. I have not heard of this being offered in the future but will send it up to the flagpole to review for possible future implementation. The one downside of this is that our team needs the book in hand to review, unfortunately.

    3. Each signature will be reviewed individually. If one is found to be inconclusive, fraudulent, or something like an autopen or a secretary was used to sign the item, this will be noted and can be reviewed on the certification lookup page which will have ALL the notes. This will not affect the other 9 signatures, however. If the other 9 are authentic, this will be visible on the label.

I collect sketch covers often these are done with out a witness.  Up to this point I have been sending them to :censored: for signature verification, then having them encapsulate the comic with an "Art" label rather than have the book graded.  I do this as the art is the unique value setting component, and I feel a grade hit for dirt transfer from an Artist's art board, would distract from the art itself.  Now that JSA is onboard with CGC, would I be able to submit a sketch cover for signature verification (obviously the art is not authenticated) and have the book encapsulated without being graded?

    Hello!

JSA does not authenticate aftermarket sketches. If this book was submitted and the autograph is authentic, but it is determined that the sketch will negatively impact the overall grade of the comic, the comic will receive a CGC Qualified green label. Hope this helps!

@MattM CS are the new yellow/black labels going to work similarly to the current system with custom labels?

I have several non-custom labels with the 'CGC Sig Series' centered. All of the custom labels have the 'CGC Sig Series' left aligned to make room for the custom label image.  If you get a custom label with the JSA Authentication, will that label copy also be left justified (and then the custom label appears above the black header? seems like it could get pretty crowded...)

    Thx!

Good Eye! Unfortunately, I have not seen these labels yet but I am sure our label designers will take this into account before announcing these custom labels. Thanks for your patience!

What label does a book get if it already has a yellow label, but you send it in to get an interior signature JSA'd?  I wouldn't want that stripe because it would make it look like it ONLY has JSA'd signatures.  Maybe give it the yellow stripe at the top (like it already has) but add that additional text about JSA in the stripe.  Or, just make the JSA'd signature a label note.  But I definitely wouldn't want that black stripe on a book with witnessed signatures.

I'm glad the distinction between "witnessed" and "authenticated" is clear (as opposed to the guys across the street who use the same label, just have it in fine print.

What happens though if someone submits a pedigreed book for witnessed signature?  Do you get a gold label?  Yellow?  A sharper contrast between the two would probably be nice.  Or had they used a different color for authenticated, that would have been even better.  Perhaps red?

For now, this should get the Yellow label with a note of the pedigree below the signature information on the label. We are currently in the process of making some new labels and custom labels though so be sure to be on the lookout for more information regarding situations like this. Thanks for your patience !

So, for an example, how would this TMNT #1 3rd Print be treated? Verified sigs and sketch? Or just the sigs, not the sketches, which may or may not detract from the grade?

Currently this service is only for comic sized books. As this run of TMNT fits into our Magazine holders, it would not currently qualify for this CGCxJSA authentication. That said, we are working on making our other collectible types available through this label so be sure to check back later.

As for a remarque this size (as these are not full blown sketches) this should not likely be not negatively impact the grade but we would need this in hand to confirm unfortunately.

What color will the label be if the book is restored and the sigs are authenticated? Black and yellow with a purple stripe?

Great question!! This will still receive a full purple RESTO label with a note regarding the JSA Signature Authenticated currently. This is because the book would not qualify for the Yellow/Purple label for SS witnessed signatures with restoration. That said... We are working on some other labels as well as custom labels that have not yet been released so be sure to check back later if you are looking for a label like the Yellow/Purple one below but for JSA Authentication.
