If you saw those first two pages, you'd get sick too!

FYI...Gene Colan got sick after drawing the first two pages of that story and so Jack Kirby took over the rest of the book. What a great battle!!!

Yes. I talked with him for a few minutes about some of his work. To be honest with you, I wasn't too familiar with him (although I do own the Wizards poster that he did back in the 80s— does anyone remember that movie?) His stuff is really incredible!! Take a look here I don't know how a con this small gets Wrightson and Kaluta. I didn't have a chance to talk with anyone about that because I didn't really look at the program until after I had left. Several of the exhibitors said that there are usually more dealers there (and named a few) but were unable to make it because of conflicts. To tell you the truth this is the first time I've been to that show myself, although I'm definately planning on going next year!!!! By the way, here's part of the William Stout bio spread that was in the program...

It was a small con. Smaller than I thought it would be.There were only about 10 exhibitors. But, there was some nice books to be had. Like I said before, not much HG horror. My heart jumped when I saw a HOM #190 on the wall of one of the exhibitors, but it turned out to be VF- (at best), so I passed. There were a few other HOM books (195 comes to mind) but still not real high grade. Also saw a few PS and WWT that weren't too bad, but I had all of the ones offered, so, again I passed. This part is OT, but I also collect silver age books, so here's what i bought (all were really nice HG books with super gloss and white pages. They were from a recently purchased collection, and I bought them all from a terrific dealer that I've been buying from for years). Atom 13, 14, 16; Showcase 50 & 51; Mystery in Space 82, 84, 85, 88; Doom Patrol 93, 97, 101, 110; Teen Titans 19, 20, 21. Well, it looks like P,B & J sandwiches from a while, but it was worth it.

Just a little off-topic...I realize this post should probably be listed in the "Comic Events" section, but I really felt it was appropriate for the Infinate Horror post, so here goes... I just returned from a small local con in Greensboro, NC. The show has been an annual event for the past 15 years or so. It's put on by the Parts Unknown comic store. This year the guest of honor was William Stout, who had on display some beautiful dinosaur art. Really awesome stuff!!!! There was not much high grade horror stuff there and I came away with about a dozen beautiful DC silverage books (Mystery In Space, Atom, Teen Titans and two gorgeous Showcase - the I-Spy issues #50-51). Anyway, before I'm accussed of being WAAAY OT, the convention program had an advertisement for next year's show. Here is is...

Hey banner, that's one of the nicest 88's I've seen. You're right, in that most of the copies I've seen are "cut-off" on the right side. That issue, along with 105 are probably my favorite HOS covers.

Just looking back over this thread and wondering... with all of the great books that have been listed, what is your favorite bronze horror cover??? There are so many to choose from. How about HOM 174 or 190, 195 or 205, 208, 213, 217 or 236? And what about HOS? Maybe # 88, 92 or 103? How about Witching Hour 1 or 10 or 33? Even Phantom Stranger 10 or 18 or 26? SOHH #5, the great Wrightson Jack 'o Lantern cover? Or Unexpected, or Dark Manson or.....I could go on and on. But is there just ONE that sticks out above the rest for you? What is it and why?

Thought I'd post a few of my recent acquisitions. Some have been posted before, I'm sure, but they're new to me. So...

Yes, I did. That one, and all the other HOM were bought from Harley. They are all beautiful copies, especially the 214 and 221. Went back today and picked up a beautiful copy of JLA 71 from Basement Comics.

By the way, I never can figure out how to get those stupid scans to appear at the bottom of my posts instead of in the middle.

Sterling, You are right. Most of the "big time" dealers consider the Charlotte show as "too slow". And, indeed, it may be. But it's still a nice "local" show with a great atmosphere. I wish it could draw more of the bigtime dealers and their books though. Yes, there were a few CGC books there. I didn't see any horror though. Books that caught my attention were a CGC 9.6 copy of Superboy # 155 for $350.00. Justice League of America 71 (NM+ though not CGC) for $110. I may still sneak back tomorrow for that book. It was gorgeous!!! Primer #2 and Grendel #'s 1-3, all NM (beautiful copies) for about $125 apiece (again, not slabbed). There were more great books there, but I wonder if some of the larger dealers who were there (ie, Harley and Heroes and Dragons) were saving their best books for San Diego? Anyway, I had a great time and picked up some nice books. So, overall, I'd say it was a great show. — Rick

Pricing on these books was cheaper than buying them on ebay. Actually, the HOS 81 listed for $26.00!!! I got it cheaper than that. It is not a real high grade book like all the other ones shown, but still not too bad. Wish I had seen that HOM 179!!!!! There were quite a few 100 pagers at the show, but I just ran out of money. I did pass on a very nice WH #2 for $45. I'm still kicking myself on that one. Wait!!! There's still one more day to go!!!

Just back from the Heroes show here in Charlotte. The show was well attended today and there was a lot of great books there. If you had the money and the desire, you could have purchased a complete run of Spiderman and X-Men, probably all in high grade. Those books were there in mass. Nice stuff to look at though. Chris Foss has been buying collections faster that I can buy stuff from him. He brought his newly acquired Marvel Comics #1(9.4 restored) to the show. I actually got to hold that book a couple of weeks ago at his store!!! It is truly a beautiful book. I was at HarleyYee's booth yesterday, and some guy purchased a handful of nice books, then walked off and left them laying on the shelf!!! I offered to take the books and go look for the guy, but Harley just laughed (?) Luckily the guy paid with a credit card, and Harley got in touch with him later that night and offered to mail the books to the guy. I was kind of surprised that there was not more really high grade horror books up on the display boards. Had to dig through the boxes for most of them. I ended up buying most of my stuff from Harley. I got several really nice Neal Adams' Superboys and a gorgeous Batman 244 ( I would love to show you those books, but I know that would be OT). So, I'll just post some of the horror books that I got. I know most of them have been posted before, but they're new for me, so...

Hey, Sterling, I hate to hear that you're selling your collection. If you're looking for someone to sell it to, why don't you try Chris Foss of Heroes and Dragons (Columbia, SC). I know that he buys a lot of collections and he will be in Charlotte this weekend for the con. However, I hope things change and you don't have to sell it all off. Good luck to you. —Rick
