  1. I just started selling again on eBay after a few years hiatus. Took a minute to get used to the new setup, but I've done about $2,500 in sales in the past month (mostly vintage video games and strategy guides, but a couple of comics). So far, knock on wood, it's been a smooth process, and the payouts come quick. Of course the fees are a little rough, but I figure that I'm not sure of another way I could get so many eyes on my stuff, so I just look at the fees as the cost of "marketing" and adjust accordingly.

  2. Ok, so you got me curious to go back and dig into it, because I recently got the 358, and I was shopping for a 357 and 359 and kind of dismissing the 'Tec run. But like a lot of "first appearances," when you actually look at the content it gets a little muddy (no pun intended - cuz crocs hang out in mud or whatever...). Anyway, here's a breakdown:

Detective Comics 523 - Feb. 1983. CGC label notation states "1st appearance of Killer Croc in cameo." Here is the extent of his appearance in the issue:

Next up: Batman 357 - March 1983. CGC notation is "1st full appearance of Killer Croc and Jason Todd." Here's Croc in the issue (there are a couple of other panels where you can spot him in the crowd/background; I didn't include those):

Detective Comics 524 - March 1983. CGC label says: "Killer Croc appearance."

Batman 358 - April 1983. This is interesting, because so far, we've seen Croc as a trench-coated figure in Batman 357 (noted as his first full appearance), and we've gotten a brief look at his face in 'Tec 524 (simply noted as "Killer Croc appearance"). But check out the opening page of Batman 358:

I'll include a couple more panels from 358, but if I included every time he shows up like I did the other books, I might as well just paste the whole comic in here:

So, like most other first appearances across multiple issues, it doesn't seem really cut-and-dried, and it seems like 357 isn't the best issue to deem his full first appearance.

Just sayin', if you're taking suggestions... xD

  4. 1-4 always get all the love (rightfully so), but I wonder when other early issues will start to pop in value/cost - I was at a show this weekend and saw a raw #10 as an $80 wall book. Obviously anybody can ask for any price, but it surprised me because I feel like you can still find it for $20-30. Maybe it was overpriced, but on the other hand, it does seem like a lot of those early books from the first run should cost more...

I don’t watch these hucksters and don’t think they bring any value to the hobby. With that said, they’ve sent their mindless followers to my eBay listings in droves since they started. So, huckster on, snake oil Tom!

Ha! Yeah, I take it all with lots of grains of salt, but I do enjoy comic content and there just isn't a ton of quality content out there I've found. I like Very Gary's stuff, and at least there's a decent amount of work/production that goes into Tom's content.

Oh, interesting! I hadn't seen those - I just thought it was a weird coincidence. I would have easily passed on that book, even for $3, if I hadn't seen that video. It actually kind of helps explain (to me at least) why you can still find good deals in the wild; it's almost impossible for someone to keep up with every single hot or popping book. Although I did get a high-grade copy of Marvel Comics Presents 79 for $2 from the same guy, so maybe he was a little more out of touch than most...

  7. So, I'll admit that I watch the spec vids like ComicTom and whomever, but I don't always act on them - it's just interesting to see what they're pumping on a regular basis, and like them or not I think they deserve some props on their content creation. But in a funny coincidence, I just watched a recent one and they were talking about Ultraman 1 - a comic that would never be on my personal radar.

I watched the video Saturday, and literally the next day (yesterday) I happened to pop in to a local comic and toy show. One toy guy had three short boxes of books and a sign saying "all comics 50% off" - this was in the first box:

    So, thanks ComicTom 101! xD

I'm wondering if anyone else is confused about the new eBay payout policy and why they removed PayPal from that end of it. (If there's another thread talking about that, any direction would be appreciated!)

I almost entirely use the mobile app and I can't tell if the process to transfer your sales into your bank account is automatic... or does it sit as available balance like PayPal?

I hadn't sold in years and I just started selling again about 3 weeks ago, and I was confused too. But so far it's been ok - I've done about $1,900 in sales, and they just transfer payment to your bank. I have mine set up for daily transfer. The first couple of sales they held it for a bit - probably because I hadn't sold in so long, but now it's regular. I was a little trepidatious at first but it's been really smooth, and even the process of printing shipping labels is easier too, and they just take the cost out of your payout, which makes it easier in my opinion.

I get that, but I would be furious with myself if I paid $2,500 for a 9.8 Blue Label on the same day a SS 9.8 was BIN for $2,100.

Personally I'd rather have a blue label, especially on a key book that I want. I do like the sig series sometimes, but generally only if it has a remarque, and/or if it's an artist I like but it's not on a key issue. Maybe I'm in the minority though...

  10. It stopped happening a few minutes after I posted. The php issues, that is. I can't confirm the other issues on the boards have stopped, although there haven't been as many "I think my cgc slab is tampered with because my 8.0 Batman #521 has a weird smell to it" posts lately.
