I guess I just dont like the way this mans legacy as a father and husband is being trashed.
He cant defend himself.
He worked for his money.
Now...If his wife and kids went without because of his obsession, that would be wrong.
As long as he provided food, clothing, shelter and protection...using comics as his escape form an otherwise miserable home life, is not so bad.
Im sure we didnt all have fathers who showered us with love and attention.

SCS shouldnt even be a thing.
The comic shouldnt move around in the case that was designed to freeze the comic in its current condition.

The dude was a lawyer? So he probably had money to burn.
Not everyone loves collecting gold bars, expensive cars and real estate. If his family was fed and cared for then I honestly dont see why this would be such a negative.
He obviously took the time to store his collection and make sure it stayed fresh. Thats not hoarding, thats just collecting on the next level. 99% of us will never sniff that level so maybe its just hard for us to grasp.
He bought storage containers for Gods sake! Its not like there were stacks of comics under the bathroom sink.
And his family can say what they like about not being included in his hobby NOW.
Who knows how they felt back then. I know my children, ages 14 and 23, have ZERO interest in my comic collecting.
Ive tried my best but you cant force someone to love what you love.
We watch Marvel movies together but they simply dont want to read comic books.

Its possible the book was damaged between being pressed and graded.

I love 9.6s that have zero visible flaws.
I had great success finding them in 2019 / 2020.
I put together a gorgeous Walking Dead run of issues 1 - 10 & 19... most in 9.6 / 9.8 and they all look flawless to the naked eye.
The past few years, not so much.
In fact, Im finding it hard to even find a 9.8 without flaws these days.
I tried buying older slabs but many of the books in the old slabs have SCS.

Here's a chance to grab a tatty copy in a lot of four ASMs: Dont be put off by the .co.uk IP address, this lot is in the US, Toledo, Ohio.
Unfortunately the 210 is in the worst shape of the lot, but with a hazmat suit and gloves you may survive handling it.....
Thanks for the heads up.
I wouldnt even feel comfortable storing that book with my other books.
Id need to quarantine it.
Thats one fugly book.

Thanks guys.
I have read it but my copy is in a CGC case now.
I like to have a readers copy for any slabbed books I own.
Its usually an easy task because my interests are 90% modern.
ASM is the only title I collect through the ages.
This book (ASM 210) will most likely come down in price at some point so ill probably just keep my powder dry for a while.

Marvel Tales maybe?
Im just looking for a readers copy of 210.
The listings/prices for 1st prints on Ebay make little sense right now.
Raw copies are damn near as much as graded copies, which are priced all out of whack.
Low grade - CGC graded copies are almost as much $ as mid grade - CGC graded copies which are almost as much $ as VF+ CGC graded copies.
Im not sure how these sellers expect to sell a CGC 4.0 for the same price that a CGC 7.0 is listed at.

I am by no means trying to tell you what or how to collect, I was merely responding with my opinion on why comic books stress you out, I found that to be a bit sad since comic books are supposed to fun, if I offended you in anyway I apologize.
No problem at all, my friend.

BTW, I have been told that this is a production chip, which is evidenced by the same “chipping” through the interior pages. Very common, and allowable in 9.6.
Thanks for clearing that up.
I was going to ask you to check with the grading team on that.
I dont agree with it because there is a chunk missing from the cover.
It is what it is.

Hi
Sorry to hear this happened to you. I wish we had the opportunity to inspect the slab and book. I guess it's too late now.
Mike
Hi CGC Mike.
This was not a book that I submitted but one that I purchased.
That said, I did not destroy the slab yet and would be more than happy to send you the empty slab if you provide me with a shipping label.
Id like to keep the blue label with the book but this is the cert #:

Just my opinion...
If you do not want to be stressed you should adopt a 1960's/1970's attitude towards collecting, that is, that they are comic books, meant to be opened, read, handled and enjoyed. Todays mentality is high grade only, perfect (NM+ 9.6/NM/MT 9.8), encapsulated books, how much are they worth and "OH NO!!!, a can barely see it defect", will I still get a 9.6? I can imagine the stress of buying new books and having to find the "perfect copy" and keep it that way, sending it for grading and hoping nothing happens to it along the way.
I imagine that the era you grew up in has a lot to do with your mentality towards collecting, here's hoping you can find more joy in collecting and a lot less stress.
Whoa, take it easy there, Dr. Melfi !
I collect what I like as most here do.
I like NM/NM+ books and im willing to pay the premium.
I collect mostly moderns, ASM aside, so it works for me.
~BUT~
I also have low grade/reader copies, reprints or TPBs for every graded book in my collection.

Nothing to fold, the chunk is gone and every page is damaged.
Oh well, I needed a nice raw copy anyhow and it wasnt that expensive.
I also wanna add that the slab opened way to easily.
I just ran my finger nail along the opening and it popped right open.
It snapped back closed without sealant too.
Ill take a hammer to it when I get home.
The slab, not the book.

So your "Spidey-sense" was tingling and you pulled the trigger anyway, without inquiring? No wonder collecting is stressful to you.

Kinda tough to imagine how this flaw would appear while in the case.
I agree 100%.
I was thinking it may have been damaged during encapsulation but now that I look at more slabbed copies on Ebay, I see that this defect is present on many high grade copies, some worse than others.
Im going to guess its a common manufacturing defect?
I still dont agree with it though.
Defects like this should always count against the book IMO.
And if a high percentage of copies have it, well, those copies should be ineligible for NM or better grades.
It seems like every book I buy now has some sort of issue that stresses me out.
Im trying to hang in there but collecting comics should not be stressful.
I also wanna add that I did see it in the pics but thought:
"It must be debris inside the slab...no way a 9.6 has that harsh of a defect."

He isnt here to tell his side.
If he had storage containers full of vintage cars, would we criticize the man for not allowing his children to sit in them?
My father had a huge gun collection he kept in a locked room that I was never allowed to go in.
It was his collection, not the families collection and he spent hours in that room everyday after dinner.
Are some just crapping on this guy because he collected childrens books?
Probably.
