  1. This thread just keeps on giving What an astonishing piece. Where on Earth did you find that?
  2. I don't want to steal Andrew's thunder, but Dells had some very odd pricing back in the day, e.g. Walt Disney's Comics and Stories. 10c per 36pp issue up till #243 Then NO PRICE on #244 Then 15c until #261 Then 12c (?!) for #262 and #263 (end of the Dell run) Gold Key kicks off at 12c for #264 until #332. Then a 12c and 15c issue #333 Then back to 12c for #334 until #335 Then the long run at 15c from #336 I am guessing the buggering about with pricing early on was a result of the impending switch of publishers. Later on, I think Gold Key was testing "buyer resistance" to the 15c price. My12c
  3. They can be found at ikea. Detolfs are what they are called...about 60 bucks a piece. I have four of them...they rock. Awesome room BTW! Love the slab displays! See, this is what sucks (sometimes) about being here. North American price of Detolfs? $60. Local Australian price? $149!! Remember, the two currencies are as near as dammit to parity as well. Just sucks. I'd like a couple but I'm not going to get bent over. /rant
  4. I really like this cover - the nephews in the "foxhole" just epitomises kids during the war years. Is part of the new strategy with Jon to make sure the books bought by you and sent to him are so distinctive that undercopy shenanigans are easily detected?
  5. Beautiful covers, Fay - they really make one want to read the stories. I didn't want to quote the whole post, but any particular reason you picked up two OFF 65's?
  6. These are great pages - thanks very much to all concerned with the scanning and posting What strikes me is the sophisticated story, vocabulary, grammar and sentence structure used in these early comics that were very definitely marketed for kids. Compare and contrast this with later efforts (by all comics publishers) where the stories were dumbed down in terms of narrative and the "word palette" (for lack of a better expression ) was far more limited. What happened? Did kids get dimmer? Blame the education system?
  7. No, that's how they were returned to the distributer for the refund. The top part of the comic's cover (the title) was returned to the distributor for a refund, the rest of the comic was supposed to be destroyed (by the retailer) - but many, many made their way to the, ummm, secondary market. It is obviously cheaper to ship part of the cover than the whole comic - and it also means the distributor doesn't have to worry about disposing of thousands of comics - just the bit of the cover that was returned to claim a credit.
  8. Nice book and all that, but this cover is kinda disturbing . Leaving aside the inherent "cannibalism" why is the clearly dead (and cooked) turkey restrained in a vice? Why is Donald using an axe to carve it? Maybe I'm missing something. Maybe it's not a turkey. Goose? Gladstone's got lucky just once too often, and DD has cracked? Maybe I've just got too much time on my hands . . .
  9. (1963 for sure) Very cool. Don't suppose that is your undercopy? Sorry, late in responding, but (at the moment) that's my only copy. I'll keep looking now that I know there's a demand, though. (thumbs u
  10. Very Nice What's the difference in the Canadian v U.S. editions? Can't be the advertising or the pricing - are the subscription details different?
  11. Lovely stuff, Andrew. I have a real soft spot for the #78, largely due to the "story behind the cover" and yours is in so much better condition than my "reader".
  12. I am a little confused here. Does this mean that the maximum cost to have any comic book graded (walk-thru service) is $1,000? Or is it 2.5% of FMV? To clarify, would a NM Action #1 cost $1,000 to grade - or the (much higher) amount of 2.5% of Fair Market Value?
  13. Fellow Charlton fan reporting!! Really like them, especially when they are terrible (I am looking at you, Bill Fraccio and Tony Tallarico). Also like them not-so-bad:
  14. Very nice Andrew, look forward to the group shot. That 62 looks like a very rare and highly collectible "Beak Abuse in Prospect" genre. Now, if tb's books are in the stratosphere and yours inhabit the troposphere I'd reckon mine would be found somewhere in the magma layer of the Earth. Not the Earth's core, though. That'd just be silly.
  15. Great display! Kudos! It's kind of remarkable that (by my count anyway) Mickey appears on the cover 24 times out of 60 issues - less than half of the covers of his own magazine
  16. Nice copy of a rarely seen book. Mike Roy cover?
  17. That's actually the point of a Silverberg SF novel "Up the Line". Highly recommended
  18. Odd. I thought the same thing reading your vastly inferior undercopy Has Spielberg ever been called on this? As to other similarities, Scrooge has always been on quests, so it's sort of natural the narratives would have a little in common. Holy Grail (Last Crusade) I don't think Barks tackled, Crystal Skulls I'm not so sure about . . .
  19. Wait a minute - I resemble those remarks! These are the sort of undercopies I'll happily house all day long (thumbs u :
