  1. I think it was Steranko in his "History of the Comics" that related Finger was thinking a sidekick would stop Batman having to constantly internalise, or talk to himself, i.e. he had someone else to discuss the "adventure" with.
  2. Well done Always regarded Marvel Team Up as the second monthly Spider-Man title.
  3. "The saga of a fighting man and his terrible singing sword". What, off key? Flat? Tempo just not right? These do not come up too often, I think mainly because people, by that I mean non-collectors, hang on to them, Why? Just look at Foster's linework and composition. Just gorgeous. I also think the lack of word balloons in the Prince Valiant strips gave them a pseudo intellectual cache, a kind of "see, I'm not a comic. I am better than that" that elevated the comic's status however little. Subject matter didn't turn off concerned parents either. Lovely books Andrew. Any "interesting" advertising within?
  4. Well, a long trip for a couple of books resulted in a very happy antipodean punter. Kudos
  5. Huey Dewey and Louie " Yippee Ki Yaa" Why those foul mouthed fowl . . . I am not sure how delighted I would be as a member of the 374th Two-Engine Flying Training Squadron with having Goofy as my insignia. Have you done anything with the Dell cover proofs yet?
  6. Only two reasons, really: 1. It fills a hole in a run 2. It looks interesting, and I don't have it "2" may lead to collecting a run and therefore "1". Then the cycle begins anew. I don't really invest in my collection. I just collect.
  7. Entertaining report and thanks for the effort - I know these things take a while to create. Now. aren't you going to explain to the American cousins what "Spare a penny for the Guy" means?
  8. That is priceless. "I'm winning, yes I am, wait a minute, yes I am. Bugger
  9. Stickers on comic books. Oh, the memories. Specifically Fantastic Four #48. An unfortunate collision of real world events resulted in all of the F48's that landed in Australia for distribution having the monopoly distributor here (Gordon & Gotch) applying a "10c" sticker to every single one. Why? Just at that time, Australia was switching from "Pounds, Shillings and Pence" to a decimal currency. In February 1966, the time these comics arrived, the "new money" dictated that one shilling (old) was equivalent to 10c (new). So, Gordon and Gotch (who for some time had happily imported US 12c comics, with local newsagents happily marking them as a shilling (1/-)), decided to make sure Australians were not overcharged 12c Australian for the comics i.e. the US cover price and instead were covered with a "10c" sticker. The problem is that over many, many years I have seen so many FF48 covers ruined by amateur attempts to remove said sticker. It is one tough bastich to remove, unless one knows what one is doing
  10. 1981 Sydney Australia Comic Convention handbook. The cover is all of the Australian characters known at that time. It was the third Australian Convention:
  11. Now there's a book that is very hard to find in any grade. Not expensive at all, just difficult to track down - origin first appearance "Peacemaker". Well done. His (Peacemaker's) next showing in #41 is also a bear to locate.
  12. Beer? Yes, it is more than a breakfast drink, but I think the bevvie pictured (with a straw - hope it's not plastic) is orange juice, Strange colour, yes, but not unusual for the Mother Country. Oh, and the middle "wrapping" I believe are two poached eggs. This is a a full English Breakfast.
  13. I stand corrected, but it makes me realise how heavily cropped the GCD images are - I tend to look at the cover edges and spine ticks when trying to identify comics.
  14. Where did this scan come from AJD? It's not the one that was sold (it has a name and a stamp on the cover) and it ain't the one on GCD either - which means there are at least three out there.
  15. "I had everything, Keith Williams for a husband, *blah blah* balls *blah blah* . . . One does wonder if husband Keith was subject to some sort of "Crying Game" surprise. Maybe it wasn't so much a surprise as a bonus (for Keith). It also shines a different light on Keith's "Show them how we did the twist on our honeymoon". Gawd the Charlton's in this period are gloriously awful.
  16. Got these in the same deal. I'd heard good things about the series and creator, and the price was right. Started reading them and so far I like it. Modern, I know, but don't judge me
  17. Been a while since I've bought anything, but lashed out last week and this is the result. I like the odd ball titles (they're cheap and it is a challenge to track them down) and ACG's have some good to "OMG" art. Chic Stone inking over Chic Stone and trying to channel Kirby results in an alarming mash-up.
  18. Doc Brown? Is that you, Back From the Future?
  19. OK. I will. A two man atomic submarine. I'll buy it. Those guys will be very busy, what with the reactor, armaments and all. Very busy. Seems to be a leaky arrangement too. I mean they're wearing wet suits and have SCUBA gear. Must be one of those short range nuclear submarines. Very expensive, but must be effective. I do like the submariners' threat detection ability. A giant floodlight raking the harbour's surface, illuminating the "submarine" and our sailors have a restrained and responsible reaction: "Let's go! We've got trouble coming!" I also applaud the author's homework in correctly identifying Murmansk as a major Soviet military port, dating to WWII, and useful as it is ice-free all year round. Kudos. Oh, and that "graveyard" quip? No wonder - it took you 16 hours to respond to me
  20. Didn't the former Soviet Union get the memo that submarines are supposed to "Run silent, Run deep"? "R-R-R-R KLANK KLUNK RUMBLE" Now THERE's your problem . . .
  21. This is very interesting - I have not seen this, but now thanks to Google I am up to speed on a Franco-Belgian strip that isn't "Tintin". The map in the lower right panel is of some concern. There is a Kamchatka Peninsula but I doubt a "Kamtchaka" exists in the same area.
