  1. what you want, what you can afford, and what you can get are 3 different things. In this hobby you are doing well to get 2 out of the 3. I find that "what you can get" is the most elusive, as competition and auctions, and sniping, and being connected have all conspired to make something that seemed plentiful much scarcer. I used to see a ridiculous amount of bread and butter vintage panel pages at any dealers table or website in the late 90's to 2010, even as late as 2012. Marvel art from the late 60's to early 90's is far and away the most difficult to find. I can get a Schaffenberger Suberboy page all day long, they're like Sad Sack art was in the late 90's. But Sal Buscema random late 70's anything? Fugettabowtit. It's also hard to shed that collectors mentality - It was easy to do with comics, get a run, a title, all appearances, keys, themes, whatever. Doing that with art is expensive. the worst thing you can do is settle for a lesser example of an artist just to "check the box" If you pick up a sketch or commission or prelim or a doodle on a napkin, even more so. If it's not published, you are pizzing your money away.
  2. yeah, but they're coming HERE to Texas where @Jay Olie Espy and I live with your sushi, electric cars, yoga pants, and In-N-Out Burger. Try driving through Austin at rush hour.
  3. The new fees were part of the negotiated ransom with the Russian hackers so buyers will input their bank account info instead,... (I hope)
  4. you can remove an item from an auction before it goes to the floor- happens from time to time. After the HA-ck recently, many of the Sunday auction lots got pulled because they didn't get good exposure due to the outage. But once they strike the gavel that sucker is sold, and it is no longer yours. Even if the buyer backs out, I'm not sure it doesn't default to the next highest bidder- there may be some fine print there where the consignor has some say in that though. Neither the consignor nor HA is motivated to take a lesser amount, but HA is motivated to conclude a legally binding sale whether you like it or not and I'm sure the fine print of their terms and conditions reflect that.
  5. “the tape at the top edge. In some cases I had to trim off about a quarter inch of Neal’s art on one edge. I remember Adler gleefully handing Adams a handful of these trimmed strips one day, telling Neal he was returning his original art.” And If Neal kept those trimmings I bet he’d sell those too, sort of like those novelty items from the 70s where you could get a keychain or pen or paperweight adorned with shredded $100 bills taken out of circulation.
  6. I think you answered your own question. And most artists that have drawn him are contemporary, and most readers are under 30. They just don’t care THAT much. This will be a much different hobby in 20 years despite what some refuse to acknowledge.
  7. Clearly you never venture into the main comic threads on the CGC board. This image is used on a near daily basis, sometimes edited with other people’s faces.
  8. I don’t see Marvel investing in any of the public domain monster when they are too easily blunted by another studios take (look no further than the flailing Universal Monsters film franchise) They’d be better off with their own characters. Morbius is shooting, Hellstrom in development, Blade rebooting, - then there’s characters like Man-wolf, Lilith, Simon Garth, Man-thing.
  9. And that's exactly what they are hoping for.....nothing to see here, move along, move along.....
  10. Vampire Tales #7: Howie Chaykin Vampire Tales Ad by Pablo Marcos
  11. I had to check my block list and didn't recognize one of the names, turns out that little millenial twerp changed his board name.
  12. I believe everyone I have on ignore stems from that one thread. Prior to that there were only 2 people I ever put on ignore, and one of you (in this thread) I did in fact stop ignoring recently as I forgot what exactly it was you did to get on my last nerve.
  13. I always was of the impression that the great division within these boards wasn't so much noobs vs vets but the Golden Age forum's disdain for the dumpster fire that is Comics General. Meanwhile the Original Art forum was blissfully unaware that the other forums even existed or looked down their noses at all this slabbing and grading nonsense.
  14. very little info, and nothing from HA directly on what happened- but there's this article: https://www.dallasobserver.com/news/cyberattack-takes-dallas-based-heritage-auctions-offline-11785625 So they were the victim of ransomware but refused to pay and restored the site themselves. and it shows: Swapped images and thumbnails from other auctions all over the November HA auction.
  15. they've updated the message on their website slightly: they seem rather sure of themselves that nothing sensitive was lost. Call me skeptical. No website that's down 72 hours+ instills confidence in me. 72 hours ago they didn't get hacked necessarily, that's just when they found out they were hacked. UPDATE Our Email and Dallas phone systems are fully operational and we expect the website to be up soon. We have confirmed that we were the victim of a malware attack. We have no evidence and no reason to believe there was any unauthorized acquisition of any client or company data. Additionally, client financial information such as credit card numbers and bank account information is maintained and secured by the payment provider. Further, all HA.com passwords are encrypted. All currently affected auctions will be extended or rescheduled, with revised schedules posted once HA.com returns to service.
  16. It’s been nearly 72 hours since Heritage went down. Since then, aside from one general message about the attack there’s been zero information or statements - I’m rather surprised to say the least. I’m equally surprised it’s not a bigger topic of discussion here. All the consignors and potential bidders should be a bit nervous about the November auction starting in 10 days. An erosion of confidence and trust impacts both the quality of pieces up for auction and bidding activity. All it takes is a few consignors pulling their pieces from the signature auction and the whole thing falls flat. Collectors are a squirrel lot, both buyer and seller. on the plus side there’s some new upstart auction house in Eastern Europe that popped up in the last couple of days with some killer OA called “Hermitage Auctions” happy bidding comrades!
  17. Actually, quite a number of us are “experts” on the subject, or at the very least well informed. You’re just not one of them. I was giving you guys an out about having to justify your purchasing decisions, because you should buy what you like,- it’s your money- but I will not indulge delusions of value compared to published art. You will lose that argument, badly, and credibility to boot.
  18. Commissions are a personal indulgence, no one else will ever covet the art or the experience as much as you. It's a nostalgia party of 1. It will never compete with an investment on widely published OA on a same dollar basis. In that sense, it's a depreciating asset I guess. Even if you sold it for 100% more in five years, it would likely be less than reselling 15K of published art with a larger pool of buyers all coveting the same art equally. If you have money to burn and enjoy it, groovy, but it's a waste of your time to try to rationalize or justify it. 1. You don't have to. 2 you can't. You made an emotional investment, not quantifiable.
  19. Dark Tower: Nice pick up! I always thought this was a cool game. My friend in Elementary had this game and we played it a bunch. I learned the word "Brigands" from this game. It appears that a remake is in the works for 2020: https://www.polygon.com/2018/8/3/17649192/dark-tower-board-game-kickstarter-restoration
  20. Dude- it’s Rabbit season as of yesterday in OK. It’s not Duck season for 2 more weeks
  21. Bring the Comic Art! We will have art and fanzines, and some really obscure magazines in addition to comics - 40 boxes of all sorts of Weird Paper.
  22. heh, Richard is about to get bumped up a notch as I will be youngest person I know going to OAF (and I"m not THAT much younger but I can say that I'm in my 40's and not from the 40's like the median attendee)
