I bought the Perez IG page. I agree it was lowish. I figured it would sell for 12-14 and I would just watch. Especially with the better (more action filled) Perez IG Thanos pages recently selling in the 20s+. But when no one else bid, I did and won. Time will tell if I got a good deal or if the release of all the Thanos Quest pages has dampered the demand for early 90's Thanos. Even so, that being Lim and this being Perez makes this different imo. I'm happy to add it to my IG collection.

If anyone else has Infinity Gauntlet pages from book 1 and is considering selling them, I'd love to have a conversation.

Yeah, I thought that IG1 page was low'ish too.

Same with the Starlin Captain Marvel 25 page for around 5K. It wasn't super content but $5k seems low'ish.

Nowadays, I'm mostly collecting original Movie Poster paintings.

Do I collect the corresponding printed posters?  No, the printed posters are usually a lot larger than the original paintings and I just don't have the display or storage room for something approaching 100 (corresponding) movie posters, lol!,

What I do collect, whenever possible, is the DVD or Blu-ray of the movies . . . ideally where the packaging covers replicate the movie poster images.

Here's an interesting one . . . Vic Fair's (at time of purchase) unused comp for CHARLIE BUBBLES (1968)  About seven years ago, I was asked to scan the original art for the cover packaging of a limited edition Blue-ray release over here in the UK.  As such the unused comp became a published Blu-ray cover!

That's awesome! Not a great analogy but sort of like a con sketch/commission that was later re-used as cover. Congrats again.

I still don't see the problem.  I don't think someone has to actually have a piece in their physical inventory to sell it, so long as they can obtain it to fulfill the purchase.  I know a number of comic dealers back in the day who offered me comics that they probably didn't have physically in hand but knew where to get them from other dealers or collections if I pulled the trigger.

In fact, especially if this was back in the old days where I'd have no idea that a piece was available and who had it, and thus would never have been able to acquire the piece but for this guy bringing it to my attention, I can't see how I'm worse off.  If he wasn't doing this, I would never be able to acquire the piece in the first place.

Now, if after paying the guy he for some reason couldn't get the piece from a dealer and then didn't refund the money to me, that's a whole different issue.

I think in some cases, the pagers were not for sale, just in someone's collection and he was shopping it around and then would try to buy if someone bit.

  4. I use to do that when I started collecting. Even then it was a nice to have and not a must have. So I would include the published page in the mylar with the art.

It's alot harder now that I have ~1,000 pieces :)

So now, I'm probably restricting to covers, I might get a cheap reader copy of any OA I have. I tried to buy a couple of omics the other day because I have the cover OA but I didn't buy them because they were't cheap enough.

Those really were fun times. Scouring every corner of the site to find something worth buying, then sending the list and waiting days...weeks...maybe longer...to see what he actually had in stock. I know it drove people nuts, but I got a lot of really nice pages at great prices through those sales.

Yes, there was definitely a thrill in the hunt, especially with the pages with no scans and I have to flip through the book and describe the first panel. Anticipating an art drop (before that term was defined) when you knew artists he repped worked on a book and he would eventually update the website was also "fun"

There are probably more but pages I bought from Spencer back in the day include:

    1. My JR Daredevil Man Without Fear pages that I bought during his annual sales (at 2 different years since I could only afford one at a time back then)

    https://www.comicartfans.com/gallerypiece.asp?piece=42681

    https://www.comicartfans.com/gallerypiece.asp?piece=42680

    2. Almost all my George Perez Brave and the Bold pages (The Batman splash was via auction, the rest via his per issue art drops)

    https://www.comicartfans.com/galleryroom.asp?gsub=56109

    3. Andrea DiVito Young Avengers pages where it was revealed Patriot got his powers from MGH (had to wait for a sale until I thought it was worth it)

    https://www.comicartfans.com/gallerypiece.asp?piece=469402

    https://www.comicartfans.com/gallerypiece.asp?piece=469403

There are probably more but the above comes to mind!

This is probably a really basic (noob?) question but why do I often see reverse outlines of figures on the back of comic art boards? Does it have to do with "light boxing"? Here's an example (with thanks to Heritage) on a Ron Garney JLA cover I plan to bid on...:

    front.jpeg.f74ad2bf6692604477716cae79a79277.jpegback.jpeg.606c7a125b8c92d2373387b03136823f.jpeg

I was told that it's an easy way for artists to double check anatomy. Sometimes when you do the reverse anatomy flaws are more apparent.

I put CL over CC for two main reasons. I think CL gets overall better offerings. And I loathe CC’s 3 minute time add on at auction end. Regardless of CL’s issues, I appreciate being able to set an alarm for exactly when an auction ends. There are times I’ve sat on one piece at CC for 30/45 minutes because it just won’t end. I bid on less there because I don’t want to sit there for hours on a few pieces.

I have no data, but if I were a seller, I would think the 3 minute extension would get higher prices since it tempts people to bid higher than their original limit (and they have 3 minutes). Similar to live bidding at HA (except it's 3 minutes). At the end of the day it's the network effects of higher net proceeds attracting consignors, which will attract more buyers and continue the cycle.

I think you just gradually move onto spending more - each time thinking that you're spending out of your comfort zone and then a few months later it's like NBD. I think when it's a big jump is when you start putting everything under the microscope.

For this cover I was thinking about, I'd spent the same amount on another piece back in January - but I felt a lot more confident about the factors that made my decision: character, the artist, the age of the art and how much I enjoyed it. Just recollecting this now, I feel more confident I made the right choice - because it doesn't really hit any of the attributes I just mentioned. Problem solved!

For me, it wasn't gradual, once the mental block was lifted, the limit was my budget :) spending 20x that amount wasn't as big an issue.

I always say if you aren't sure in this hobby, go with your gut. Sounds like that applies to you too.

  9. For the longest time I had a mental block spending more than $500 on comic art (this was during the days of a decent cover being $500'ish). The mental block was just an internal limitation, as I would have no problem spending $1,000 if it was 10 $100 pages.

I don't really know how I broke it, but I think once I accepted that it was ok to spend more than $500 on one piece it wasn't a problem. These days I still have a comfort zone (e.g. up to $5K) but have spent more than that when it was meaningful to me.

The Marvels is actually a good movie. It's at least as fun as Wonder Woman was. I just think its not tied into any MCU continuity that people are interested in, and just assumed it was something you had to have watched Wandavision, or Ms Marvel to understand.

I watched it and I thought it was fun. I hadn't seen Wandavision or Ms. Marvel and I still understood the movie.

To paraphrase Bowfinger, it's a movie and not a film!

For what it’s worth, Barracuda is to the Punisher in 21st century what Jigsaw was to Frank Castle in the 70s & 80s.

I mean, there’s also Ma Gnucci, but she just didn’t grow the legs to be a runaway hit with fans, nor does she have the reach for wider audiences, which is a real stumper, man.

Man, this is gold! Too bad no one else gets it or cares enough to comment :)

I seem to recall from years ago that a very high-quality recreation of this cover by George Perez came up for sale privately or at auction.  The recreation was so good that some Perez collectors momentarily thought it was the real thing.  I could be having false memories here, but it seemed to cause a brief sensation.  Anyone else recall this?

Now that you mention it, I do recall. Maybe the inker did it?

    Don't recall any specifics though

  13. I didn't buy any more the second day, although I did scan through everything posted.

I didn't have new items listed for Sunday and was worried that my remainder Saturday stuff might get less attention but I finished strong and sold a few pieces towards the end of the show.

Overall I'm quite happy with the show. Some higher end pieces that I would only sell at a certain price sold, and some lower end pieces sold

As Brian said, I'm buying less these days due to many reasons (main ones being I have most of what I want to collect, and I don't need addition examples from the same artist/run at today's prices)

  14. Hi Folks,

I got in a few great pieces recently and I've just posted them:

    1. Alex Maleev Ultimate Origins Cover with Professor X and Magneto

    2. Steve McNiven New Avengers DPS with Wolverine and Captain America

    3. Jim Cheung Spider-man commission

    Link to recent CAF uploads

As a teaser for my Comicartlive (CAL) booth, these 3 acquisitions pushed out existing pieces so I'll have pieces by Maleev, McNiven and Cheung in my CAL gallery, so check it out Saturday and Sunday!

    Thanks for looking

  15. Interesting article.

I don't agree with all of it but it starts with how Marvel movies and remakes are popular due to nostalgia, then ties it to loneliness. Hopefully it's not behind a paywall (I'm a subscriber)
